Before this season the two players I was hoping to breakout or at least become servicable players were Powell and Patrick Turner. At least I got one right lol. But who are the young players on the roster that you think will be good/servicable in 2013? There are 3 players i'm looking at. Greg McElroy- This is his only realistic chance at becoming a starter in the NFL, and he's shown some flashes of being able to be a solid player. Especially in a system where the Jets just want to run the ball. Demario Davis- Played sparingly this season but he has some speed and with Scott potentially shown the door after this season, he could see an increased role. Kenrick Ellis- Pouha may get cut as a cap casulty which may open up opportunities for him to get playing time. In limited action he's looked pretty good.
I'd say Quinton Coples and Demario Davis are most likely to break out because they're the two players most likely to have a really expanded role next year due to roster and talent considerations.
I think Coples but he really needs to emulate what Wilkerson does -- which is to play every snap. The scouting reports have been dead accurate on Q so far. He is an extremely talented and explosive player, when he's not taking plays off.
He will eventually. Devito's been starting, but now that we're out of contention, I bet Coples will get more and more snaps. It's not a big deal that we work him in slow. Next year he will emerge and if he even does half what Motron does, we'll be a good shape. Coples - Ellis - Wilkerson >>>>>> It's gonna happen and we'll be set for years to come up front. I'm hoping Davis is ready for next year. Another full TC will do him good. Stephen Hill will break out next year, I believe as well.
Idk why but I thought I saw some improvement in Hill before he went down. I think him, Coples, Ellis, and even Wilk will be much better next year if they get some OLBs
^ This. Other possibilities include one of Josh Bush or Antonio Allen. From the looks of thing we will need one of these raw rookies to step up.
mcelroy - no chance. I just don't see him being anything more than a backup person that has to break out is Stephen Hill
Coples will breakout as a top interior pass rusher Davis will thrive next year in an increased role Hill if his hands continue to get better should be a great threat to opposing D Ellis I think splits snaps next year Sapp if he stays healthy gets 10 sacks
I'm expecting Davis to have a more expanded role in the defense which should allow us to see what we really have in him. He's either a stud or another of Rex's overhyped nobodies.
Coples, Hill and Davis, IMO. None will be pro-bowl potential seasons (which Mo Wilk has been this season, IMO) but still big improvements over this current season. For Hill that mostly means getting healthy, better conditioning and catching the damn ball. Honestly a big part of all three will just be more game time as people have already pointed out. I think Wilson had a pretty good season this year, not great but good, I think he might have an expanded role depending on what happens with the Revis/Cromartie tandem (i.e. Revis holdout, Cromartie trade, etc.).
I'll also go out on a limb and say Josh Baker. I think he was ready to breakout this year before his injury.
Bilal Powell is a great sleeper choice also. He has shown flashes and if the Jets go out and get a power guard to run behind he might have a breakout season. Runningbacks are a dime a dozen and I say that in a good way, just about anybody can be great for a year or three in the right system.
If the Jets give him a chance, and that's a big if... Greg Mc Elroy For those who are bad mouthing him, what specifically can you point to as the basis for your opinion? Because everything he's shown on the field in a Jets uniform has been positive and encouraging. And his personality and college experience certainly don't work against him. This guy has all the earmarks of a guy who fights the system to prove himself and comes out on top. Last Jets player like this I can remember was Chrebet. I hope he gets the chance
And this is why I don't agree when people say that our receivers are below average. Yes, currently with an injured Holmes and with a raw first round draft pick, our receivers are below average. However, Hill has the potential to be one of the best receivers in the league. Unless Holmes is going to be cut, we don't need another receiver. Holmes is Holmes, he isn't a true #1 receiver, but he is still a very electric player who can take one to the house at any time. When Hill develops, he could be one of the best in the NFL, and Kerley is a very good #3. Our WR's are young, give them some time to develop. Sometimes you just have to sacrifice production for development. Thats the problem with our WR's this year, they are young and inexperienced, there is no need to draft another WR because of the lack of production this year from this group.
Don't forget Kerley and (hopefully) Edwards. All together, it makes a decent, above-average wr corps IMO.
Maybe Kyle Wilson has a breakout year too because he hasn't shown much (this is if the Jets ship Revis or Cromartie to another team)
