From what I understand, Holmes 2013 contract is fully guaranteed. Which means he will make every dollar of the contract, be it from the Jets or another team. If Jets release him, he will still get his entire money, so ZERO savings if cut. But if traded, his base salary ($11 mil) gets pushed to the other team. Thats the money Jets will save in trading him. nyjetscap.com has always shown 1.25 mil saving if cut, but I think thats inaccurate as Jets have guaranteed Holmes workout bonus and roster bonus (if any) as well. Im in favor of trading him away for a conditional third day pick just to get his contract off the books. New team gets him for $11 mil in 2013 (guaranteed), $8.25 mil in 2014 and $6.5 mil in 2015, all with ZERO dead money. EDIT: Holmes cap saving if traded is actually $11 mil (his base salary in 2013), not $7.75 mil (that was this year's base salary, my mistake).
What you are saying is absolutely true. All the backloaded contracts, from 2011 (Holmes, Cromartie, Harris, Sanchez, D'Brick...). However, most of these contracts will be off the books by 2014 or 2015. The trick to this scenario is to spend smartly. Not over pay for players and not sign players in their late 20s to longer than 2-3 year contracts. Also, to sustain a solid team, Jets really need to hit the draft boards and draft a few pro bowlers. The last pro bowler Jets had was from the 2007 draft, Revis and Harris. So it's time we start drafting well. We do need help in the immediate future so either we go in to rebuilding mode next year and not sign any big FA, or we sign a couple of good LBs or OLs and develop the rest via draft. I doubt Jets will ever go in to rebuilding mode. Fans can not take that and the owner isn't in a position to do so either.
I hope Howard isn't penciled down as a starter. I hope we either draft a RT or sign a decent FA. Howard is good for depth and thats it.
Agreed. Tannenbaum has to go. He's failed big time. He makes MANY poor decisions. It's not even close. He should be fired.
The talent on the field is poor all around except for a few players. Call it whatever you want: rebuilding or something else, but the Jets need improvements in many areas.
I understand the thinking, but I don't think that's their best option. Considering he has $11M guaranteed on his contract, and he is coming off a major injury, his value is about as low as it could be. I've never been a big proponent of selling low. I think it would make more sense to bite the bullet and pay him next year. The hope would be that he comes back and has a good year in 2013. After that his contract gets more reasonable and you might actually be able to get a mid-round pick (or two) for him. Doesn't that sound like a better deal?
If you'd had him in your locker room for the last two years you wouldn't want him back either. Any move the Jets make to ditch Holmes is addition by subtraction. I'd trade a 5th round pick AND Holmes for nothing just to get rid of his cap number for next year and give the Jets some maneuverability. That'd beat the value the Jets have been getting lately with their trade-ups.

It's probably a moot point, I doubt any team is gonna wanna pay him $11M next year, even if it only costs a conditional late round pick. But, hypothetically, even if there was a team interested, I think the Jets would be better off holding onto him. Even if they get the precious cap space, it's not gonna help them much in 2013. There are too many holes on this team to fix in one offseason, and it's not like all the answers are in free agency. The $11M they would save is gonna give them a bit more flexibility, but how much is it gonna help them in the long run? IMHO, not a whole lot, at least not as much as the kind of haul you might be able to get from waiting a year to trade Holmes. Look, there isn't a right or wrong answer to this kind of thing, it ultimately comes down to a philosophical perspective of what you're willing to gamble. I'm just saying, given Holmes' contract and health status, his value couldn't get much lower then it currently is. If I were running an NFL team, and lord knows no one is calling me for GM vacancies, I would be hesitant to get rid of a commodity at it's lowest value. Just a little food for thought.
