KC? Arizona? Freaking Philadelphia? I really don't know who would be crazy enough to take Sanchez for free.
What leverage do the jets have? Why would Sanchez renegotiate his contract? His salary is guaranteed for next year. Cut him and he gets paid. Another team signs him and he gets paid his full salary by the Jets and the salary of the team that signs him. He has an outstanding contract (for him).
How would that work? I know in baseball it happens. But are there examples in football where you trade a player and agree to pay part of his salary? It's like when people say "do a sign and trade." That happens in basketball, but it doesn't happen in football.
It's definitely happened before. The way you do it is to make a lump sum payment of salary to the player when he leaves. That money goes on your cap for the year. The remainder of the salary is paid normally by the acquiring team.
It would be very hard to trade Sanchez. But if someone wants him I am sure they would love to unload him. From another teams trade perspective his salary really is not to bad as a team can get rid of him after one year. So the risk taking him is not that bad. It us just to bad we did not unload him last offseason when Shefter said we could have gotten a 1st.
Not that I'm doubting you, but can you give me an example of when this has happened? Not being a smart-ass.
It happened with the Tebow trade to the Jets and it happened to another trade we did a few years ago when there was financial problems. Trying to think of who that was.
This. Unload the circus act. Sanchez will be a quiet backup. Not that I think McElroy will be the starter next year, but I'll be happy as shit if he lights it up and ends up being the guy. And if the starter gets hurt and Sanchez gets another chance, who knows? Maybe some time out of the spotlight will help him out.
It seems to me that the Tebow situation was more of how his contract was written and an "advanced salary" clause in the contract rather than the Broncos paying a portion of Tebow's salary. In fact, NYJ are paying Denver, not the opposite. I'm trying to think of a time when a team traded a player and paid part of his salary while he was with the new team.
Pretty much this. McElroy was a 7th round draft pick. It's possible he is the 1 in 100 that pans out, but it's also 1-in-100 that Sanchez magically stops sucking one day. Neither is something you should actually be happy to hope for. In all probability, McElroy will stink nearly as badly as Sanchez stinks. We need a new quarterback next season. If you want to see McElroy play out the year and maybe prove he can be a decent #2 guy moving forward, okay, I guess that's something to be excited about. But you're deluding yourself if you think we're entering the McElroy Era. This is Sanchez detox.
freaking hilarious that the only real role that our GM has is to be the "cap specialist" and even at that he fails horribly.
