WAYNE, N.J. -- The key to turning around the Jets' season is simple, Darrelle Revis said.

"Guys just need to shut up," the cornerback said with a laugh during an appearance for the release of his first signature training shoe -- the Nike Revis Zoome 1 -- at Willowbrook Mall Saturday morning.

Hundreds of fans lined up outside the first-floor Champs store to get a glimpse of Revis, who suffered a season-ending knee injury in Week 3.

Revis fielded questions about his journey to NFL stardom, his new sneaker, his recovery from ACL surgery and, of course, the state of his 4-7 team.

The Jets are 2-6 since Revis' injury and are dangerously close to missing the playoffs for the second straight season.

"The situation we're in right now, it happens," Revis said of their overall record.

But he seemed more troubled by the reported rip jobs of backup quarterback Tim Tebow in an anonymously sourced tabloid report and other incidents of perceived misquoting by the media.

"Quit talking crazy to the media, especially involving your teammates," he said during the question-and-answer portion of the event. "I think that's the worst, because when you do that, that's when it really gets divided. Because you don't know if you can trust your other teammate."

Revis -- who last spoke to reporters on Oct. 15, the day before his ACL surgery -- said he ditched his crutches a few days ago and has been cleared to do weight-bearing lower-body exercises.

He walks with a limp, and he gingerly made his way through the large crowd to sign merchandise and work the register for the first sneaker sale.

An everyday fixture at the Jets' facility throughout his recovery process, Revis said he has continued to offer encouragement to his teammates.

"Just try to coach them as much as I can," he told Newsday and SNY after exiting the store through a back entrance. "Tell them to keep their heads up and just keep working on the task at hand. It's real upsetting how it is right now, being 4-7. Nobody's excited about that record because we feel that we're better. So if we can get this winning streak going, then it'll brighten our chances of getting into the playoffs."

That would require winning each of their final five games. So their only goal, Revis said, is "just win every game out and see what happens."

He's right but he needs to address this in the locker room, not the media.

The team runs their mouth because the fat doofus who coaches the team runs his mouth. You get a loudmouth blowhard coach you get a loudmouth blowhard team.

Rex has lost control of this bunch. Revis is telling it the way it should be.

So instead of going into the locker room and telling his teammates they need to shut up, he goes and tells the media his teammates need to shut up.

    Okay then.

First off who says he hasn't voiced his opinion in the locker room, I am not saying he has but none of us can be sure he hasn't.
It is not like he is not around the facility.

As opposed to others making comments, the difference is Revis is actually a leader on this team, so he absolutely has the right and should make a statement like that. He did not call anyone out specifically and did not throw anyone under the bus, rather he made a blanket statement that happens to be true. He did not call a press conference to run his mouth, he was at a promotional event for his shoe release. Some people just over react to everything.

Does anybody in the locker room really care what he has to say ?

Not trying to be sarcastic but this message should come from players who are on the field who don't suck .... like Mangold or Cromartie. Or maybe Rex himself.

Well if he is active in the dressing room as a leader and mentor and this stuff is still happening, he isn't a very effective leader.

This worries me. Obviously Revis was only going to address this once, either to the media or to the players in the locker room...clearly he chose media. Fuck.
