At the half, I was talking to a friend of mine (who believe it or not is a Giants fan...but a level headed football fan and not a "Gang Green Hater") and I said that the Jets can win this game if they play mistake free football (both offensively and defensively) and if the Texans make a few mistakes. Unfortunately, we didn't play mistake free football. And the Texans defense basically did a good job dominating our O-Line. My question is this: Did we play well? Or did the Texans just play "average"? What I mean by us playing "well", I'm referring specifically to comparing us to last week and/or the last few games (taking into account the Revis and Holmes injuries). My opinion is that I wasn't thrilled by what we did offensively or defensively (special teams was good, aside from the onside kick which I didn't understand since we were only down by 6!). I think by giving up so many yards to the Texans on the ground was our downfall. That is what I'm most worried about in the weeks ahead. I saw missed tackles again in this game. Maybe not as many as in the 49'ers game, but I still saw them. Didn't Rex say that they were going to correct this? I know it doesn't happen overnight but one missed tackle could be the difference between a losing and a winning record. Furthermore, if we don't play good defense, I don't care if we make the playoffs or not! There is no way you can win against good football teams if you can't stop the run. If our secondary is decent, teams won't be as focused on throwing the ball (leading to less INT's) and will just gash us for yards up the middle, screens, and pitches to the outside. Hell, I know most of us just want to win games. But at the same time, I'd rather us lose by playing good Defense. What I saw last night was bad defense and an average offense.
Jets played very well. They controlled the secondary, didn't give Schaub lanes to throw the ball, and took away the deep ball. Their run defense was better, but not great. The Texans have some holes and the Jets exposed them last night but didn't take advantage.
I thought it was a combination of the two. Not to take away from the Jets because the secondary, specifically Cromartie, had a nice game. Run defense was better and they were still playing hard until the end, unlike the 49ers game.Offense was not in sync. Dropped TD by Hill, missing a wide open Cromartie for a TD, Schillens not holding the ball on the onside kick, confusion when bringing Tebow in and taking Tebow out after a 13 yard gain to the 3 were huge. When you are struggling with a lack of talent you can't let opportunities slip by the way the offense did.
Schaub marched down the field in the beginning of the game by throwing the ball (I want to say 4-5 times) and they scored. After that, I'll admit he was slightly above average. But Foster took us for a ride. We CANNOT give up so many yards on the ground. My point is this: If you can't stop the run at all, teams will exploit you. They won't need to pass against us if they can run OVER us. I don't know why you think they played very well. Please tell me how we played well. Personally, I think we played average, at best. I would have said below average, but our Special Teams saved us. Not only that, but when you compare it to the debacle from last week, if we had scored a field goal last night, even that could have been looked at as "good".
Don't we always do things like this? Isn't that why every game is a nail biter and we as Jets fans are on the edge of our seats because of missed opportunities, which we then have to compensate for by capitalizing on mistakes by the other team?
The Jets played better. A much more inspired effort, which was expected after last week's embarrassment. I give credit to the coaching staff and the players' will for this, but then again it was to be expected. You have to respond with better effort after getting blown out at home. Having said that, neither team played particularly great in any facets, except perhaps the Texans Rush Offense which dominated the game. Both teams left points to be had on the field but the better team still ended up winning. At least the Jets were getting creative and played better, a sign that they aren't ready yet to give up on the season. This was encouraging.
Do you think that the loss puts a damper on things? Or the Jets look at this loss in a good way and rebound HUGE against Indy next week? I have a feeling next week may be the week we see all things click, both offensively and defensively. Maybe that's wishful thinking, but we'll see.
the jets did what we do best. we took that team to the deep waters and smashed in the mouth. they almost folded but was talented enough to sneak out a win. teams gonna come into games with hot sauce in the back of their head and play tentative
The Jets played did play "well" and the Texans played conservative. Both teams did what they had to do to win. Texans were that much better they didn't need to take chances and trusted that their talent would win at the end of the day. The Jets made lots of mistakes but played hard and gave themselves a chance to win and that is all you can ask for.
We played well. We have a good football team. The sky is not falling no matter how much the clueless darksiders wish that it were. We've had some tough injuries, guys are stepping up and working hard to improve the football team week to week. We have the Colts next on a short wk and they just beat the pack. Need to keep working hard and get that win.
I don't necessarily think we "smashed in the mouth" (what does that even mean???) We blew a potential TD by not keeping Tebow in at the 3 yard line and we blew a potential field goal try by letting Sanchez throw on 3rd down close to the 20 yard line. Would have been an easy chip shot FG had we run the ball for a few more yards and maybe picked up the first, or had it be 4th down.
The Texans offense played average because the Jets D made them play that way. The secondary was very good and took Schaub's prolific passing out of the game. Unfortunately too much over-pursuing by the DLine and Safeties allowed Foster to gain huge chunks of yards at a time. Media heads were talking about 6 dropped passes by the receivers and 2 tipped balls. Not sure if it was Cumberland or Schillens on that last pass but I thought he was playing volley ball the way he launched it into the air. And that's not an excuse for Sanchez because he had his own share of mistakes - most notably not leading Cro more on the long pass. That was terrible cause Cro had the CB by 2 yards at least. But this team can play even with Div III WRs catching balls from our game managing QB. B+ on coaching for Rex. I thought it was awesome going for the onside kick right after a score. If Hill held onto that ball, the building would have erupted and could have totally changed the momentum of the game. The risk taking was good. But marks off for the 1 arm tackles that are still going on. Foster looked like a pinball bouncing off defenders. I even taught my 7yo daughter that she needs to "wrap 'em up" when tackling and our Pro's look like they are forgetting how to do it. Oh and by the way - we have exactly the record we thought we would have at this point in the season. While there was optimism for stealing a win from Pitt, Hou, or SF, it didn't happen so 2-3 is right where most of us expected to be.
if we had holmes last night i think we would have won the game. texans have been beating teams by like 20 points this year, we lost by 6. good game from the jets after last week. lets remember, everyone is calling this texans team the best team in football, and its not just because they are unbeaten. jets could have won the game. this will only make our team more hungry. we just need a youth injection at linebacker. these guys are too old and slow, backs are just straight up beating them. still managed to keep the texans under control considering. season is not lost, in fact, im expecting the team to go on a roll after this game.
also, you have no idea how glad i am that we have bell and landry back there this season. those long ones by foster would have been td's last year no doubt.
I disagree to an extent. While Bell and Landry are a 3 pegs upgrade from Smith, Pool, Leonhard, Jimmy was the fastest FS on the team and he would have caught foster if he was on the feild. However - he can't hit nearly as hard as Bell & Landry so its a wash.
Agreed, I saw them (Harris in particular) get out run by a running back multiple times. The LB core is certainly aging with a Bryan Thomas at 33, Harris at 28, and Scott at 32. Harris isn't THAT old, but looking at the ages for those 3, its time to start finding some younger LBs who can pursue better. On another note, the thing that can really bother me about this team is that they can be marching down the field, doing things well in a particular way and then suddenly change their strategy 3/4 down the field...makes no sense to me. I understand there is the element of surprise and variety (keep the defense guessing), but if it ain't broke, don't fix it. I'd much rather keep a rhythm than be trying to change our strategy half way down the field.
With an offense that struggles like ours, shutting down the passing game is important. We did that fairly well last night. We played a good team and played hard, we stayed in the game despite missing a few of our top players. All in all a pretty good effort, better than I had expected.
Bad defense and average offense? Please enlighten me because I respectfully disagree. More like average-good defense and bad offense. The defense looked bad on the 1st drive, yea, but overall they did not look bad an they easily outplayed the offense. My reasons for thinking this are as follows: 1. The offense only scored 10 points all game. (7 was special teams). The only TD the offense scored was when they ha good field position from the interception by the DEFENSE. 2. The defense held the Texans during several crucial situations. The interception returned to the jets redzone...they held them to a FG rathe than giving up a TD. Those 3 points are on the offense. The onside kick once again gave the Texans great field position and the D held them to 3. I believe the other int also led to a texans score (only 3 again). 3. The D forced a number of 3 and outs, while our offense was going 3 and out. 4. The D made 2 crucial stops in the 4th that allowed the offense chances to go up by 1. The offense failed on both opportunities. 5. The offense never scored a TD all night via a full length drive (again, only TD was when they started mid field from Cro's INT) So now please give me your reasons the offense outplayed the defense
