He picked Anthony Schelgel. Also, Keller too high, Kellen Clemens too high. He did a mostly good job. He really scored on some of his picks. Still...if you draft one of the biggest busts of all time then I don't want you around pulling any triggers for the Jets. Also, Tannenbaum and Mangini's first years coincided.
If drafting a bust means that person should NEVER be allowed to make decisions again then by that logic nobody should be making decisions at all in the NFL because if you search I bet some of the best guys have drafted a bust or two.
its not like you had people saying vernon gholston would be a bust. everyone thought he was nasty. the same thing goes with ryan leaf, tony mandrich, and brian bosworth. you never hear some talent evaluator saying "yo dude don't draft ryan leaf, he'll be a bust" it sometimes just happens
Mangini was a phenomenal talent getter for the Jets minus the Gholston pick. Not everything will pan out. However, he did not work well with Kokinis in Cleveland. so, maybe he just got lucky. Mangini seemed to work well with tanny in terms of drafting. rex and tanny have been awful. a flat out train wreck.
I'm a big fan of Mangini. He left the team in way better shape than when he arrived, and I think he at worst should land a front office job somewhere in the NFL. I thought Cleveland gave him the boot too early.
It's crazy but Mangini was a pretty damn good talent evaluator and he knew how to build up teams. I believe those really good drafts we had were definitely more him then Tanny.
I wouldn't be opposed to the idea of bringing Mangini in as the GM. His talent evaluation was pretty good despite a few whiffs. But I think all coaches/gm's whiff on a few players. If we could find a talent evaluator like Mangini and a person that works the cap like tanny all in one person it would be the ideal replacement. Our drafts the last few years have come back to bite us. We lack the talent and depth required to win.
The Ghost draft class sucked ass. The Ghost was the last player being talked about in that draft class....and there were many mixed reviews. NO TEAM would trade up to take him. With NE picking right after us, Mangini took the Ghost JUST IN CASE THE GHOST TURNED OUT SPECIAL AND PLAYING FOR NE far more than any kind of solid belief in the Ghost being great for the Jets. I don't believe Mangini, or any one else for that matter, was all that sold on the Ghost. But circumstances being what they were, we really had no choice.
I LIKED Mangini. This team is running out of LIKEABLE people to root for. We need MORE people like Mangini here.
I feel like a lot of people in this thread are forgetting that Mangini's failed tenure in Cleveland ever happened. The guy is just not very good. Plus, by all accounts he's a nightmare to work with. I don't know why we'd throw Ryan under the bus to bring back a guy who was less successful here.
