So 3 weeks in it looks like defenses have a pretty clear plan in place to beat Howard. Speed rush all day. It's pretty weird too because he almost looks surprised that it's coming even though it happens every play. He starts sliding over way too late and he gets there in time to push them behind the play a little bit but ultimately they get around the edge and mess things up a second too soon. Big improvement over Hunter but it seems our RT woes aren't solved yet. Will our offensive planners be smart enough to start sending a tight end to chip the end before heading off on their route? Is Howard too big and slow to make the adjustment or can he start to handle it? Are we going to be forced to spend a badly needed 1st or 2nd rounder next year on RT? Make your predictions or give your analysis.
They didn't seem to be helping him out with a chip very often against the fins, and it was clearly needed.
Maybe he'll get it -- some guys just never seem have the light go on. Protecting against that outside speed rush is not about matching speed, but anticipation -- take a shorter line and just guide them past the quarterback. But it seemed too much to hope for that a really RT was just sitting on the bench.
Let's be fair to the guy. Shut down Mario Williams completely. Last two games he has faced 2 pretty elite speed guys in Wake and Woodley and has held up fairly well allowing only some mild pressure. For the most part he has been doing it on his own without help either.
I would love the Jets to spend a 1st or 2nd rounder on a right tackle next year. I know there is a screaming need for someone to put pressure on the opposing QB, but it all means nothing if your own quarterback is running for his life. If Howard continues to do well then we should draft a guard. Build from the offensive line up - they make everything else so much easier.
Howard is a nice mauler/6th linemen type.He can be a good spot starter. Jason Smith should be starting. He is the vastly superior player. Don't let his rep from St. Louis fool you...just b/c he wasn't worth a top 5 pick doesn't mean he isn't a good linemen.
Didn't Smith take a snap as a TE Sunday? In the right side too as I recall, helping Howard as they should.
Howard has allowed one sack in three games. Three games where he has faced a premium passrusher in everygame. The one came on Woodley. Wake did jack shit against him as did Williams. To me, Howard has been solid, so I really don't understand why this thread was made. Sure, he could be upgraded, but we can't have a superstar at every position.
howard is doing just fine. cameron wake was speed rushing because everything else he tried didnt work. if thats all they can do to get around him, ill take it, cause all it means is an adjustment by sanchez to step up behind howard, and were golden.
I think Howard has been playing just fine. It has only been 3 games, we as fans really need to leard some patience. But I would love it if they drafted RT or RG in the first round. Personally, I would love it if they would draft OL, DL, and LB every year. I've always believed you build from the trench outward.
He's an enormous upgrade from Hunter. I think people are just looking for things to be negative about. Revis is done for 2012 and our QB is seemingly back to his inconsistent ways. Everything else is small fries to me.
