I don't think Jets draft poorly with their top picks. Just, they don't draft in the middle, and as a result they end up holding onto aging vets a few years too late. Crisis along the LB corps has been long time coming, and the depleted OL has been long time coming as well. Poor talents along RBs have been long time coming. With these problems looming ahead, Jets 1. failed to scout properly the past few years and 2. traded picks away, basically giving up on any possibility of restocking the roster with youth. Now, add a few busts (Ghost, Vlad) and it makes the lack of picks hurt that much more. Say what you will - I cannot stop applauding T-Bomb.
How about guys who were available with the Jets pick? And if you suggest trading up for a middle linebacker, I don't know what to tell you. Coples was a fine pick. Other options I would have been fine with were Ingram and DeCastro. Disagree that taking Chandler Jones at 16 would have been bad. If your scouting department is that high on a guy, go ahead and take him, as long as you're not going crazy passing up value. Jones would have been decent enough value. If the Jets thought Jones was better than Coples, they would have and should have taken him, regardless how some analysts value players. It's not like they would be taking Demario Davis in the 1st.
With the proviso that I am in no way ready to declare Coples a disappointment yet, I would say that my preference would have been for an offensive tackle. We have sunk so many draft picks into the defensive line, while the o-line has disintegrated and, with it, the play of Sanchez.
I'm not saying that we should of traded up for kuechly just saying i would of liked to see him as a jet as he plays hard and would fit the mould in a rex D. I like the coples pick,If we are going to debate who the jets should of realistically selected i still think we would be questioning the pick if we had selected Brockers,Irvin,Ingram etc none have showed massive productivity in two weeks to suggest the jets made the wrong call on coples.
I also think Coples will be a beast at some point. I did, however, want DeCastro and was pretty pissed when we didn't pick him. But I'm long over it.
Chandler Jones looks like an animal so far. He was getting double teamed against Arizona regularly. Coples will be a good player - I dont have a problem with that pick so far but Chandler Jones looks faster and more explosive - of course the Patriots get that one right as they usually do. I was watching that Patriot Arizona game and I'm still in shock that they did'nt win. Its almost like the seas parted paving the way for a shocking Patriots win and then their kicker blew an easy field goal when he was nailing 50 yarders all game. Arizona choked but the Pats let them off the hook.
Was a little surprised about Coples at the time until I saw how Rex wanted to use him. No problem with that pick. Our D-line is set for years now.
DeCastro was awful in TC and in the preseason. Coples will produce, but I think schematically some things need to change on the defensive side of the football.
How can anyone judge Coples after two games???? Two games????? By the way, Ingram has a grand total of 2 tackles after two games. Is he a bust?
... this ... ... was thrilled coples was still there for us ... very happy with him as the choice ... ... leading up to the draft was hoping for ingram, rieff, or decastro to still be on the board ... l_j_r
What the hell was that about btw? Dixon and Devito in on most snaps while Coples rides the bench? It was maddening we needed a chance to rush the passer to offset Lankster/Trufant/McIntyre. He looked quite solid week 1 besides.
Coples has played two games and hasnt broken any sack records yet... So to the average Jets fan...he's a bust
We should have given up Revis, Sanchez our first this year and next for RG3. Snyder had the best draft in the NFL.
