You ought to listen to Westhoff gush about Tebow at today's presser. He seems really taken with his attitude and how he goes about the game. It starts at the 9:00 mark in this video and goes on quite a while. http://www.newyorkjets.com/photos-a...nference/04073f00-1315-44b9-a423-6fb935b0a402
Westoff rarely says anything good about anybody, when he does you know that has to be a really special player.
Westy is a football psychomensch and he knows a great football player when he sees one. Keep watching his pressers throughout the season. I have learned so much about great STs play just by listening to this guy's press conferences on Thursdays.
He also spoke about out new punter and 5 second hang times and Reggie Roby(who he coached) all in the same breath.
Good listen. Thanks for posting. He seems genuine in what he says, unlike a lot of coaches who rah, rah so much they can't be believed. Would be awesome to let his last season be THE SEASON, wouldn't it?
Brief article based on the presser if you can't see the vid for some reason. Updated: Fri., Sep. 7, 2012, 5:49 AM Westhoff: Tebow is somethin’ special By MARK HALE Last Updated: 5:49 AM, September 7, 2012 Posted: 12:46 AM, September 7, 2012 Mike Westhoff is ecstatic to have Tim Tebow as the Jets’ personal punt protector, and Thursday the special teams coach gushed over his superstar. Westhoff said Tebow ranks as “one of my favorite guys.” He also complimented the backup quarterback’s football IQ, praised his work ethic, marveled over his accountability (“I’ve never heard him make an excuse — ever”) and most importantly, added that having Tebow as the punt protector offers the Jets a huge threat. “He, of course, presents tremendous fake opportunity, obviously,” Westhoff said. “We may call it. We may not.” Unlike Tebow’s Wildcat or pure quarterback role on offense, the Jets did showcase him as their punt protector during preseason when he wasn’t playing quarterback, and starting with Sunday’s season opener against the Bills, Tebow will be used in the punt protector role in games that matter. Coach Rex Ryan has said opposing defenses must account for Tebow in their game plans, and Westhoff said those squads also must prepare for him on special teams. Westhoff, who called Tebow “an outstanding young man,” said he is granted some freedom as the punt protector to determine if he wants to audible on the assigned punt call. If Tebow doesn’t like the special teams coverage, he could change the Jets’ call. “We call things,” Westhoff said. “We work together really well on it. And then we may have something on he’ll check out of. But you’d better know he’s there as an opponent.” Westhoff said he believes in Tebowmania. “To me, he’s one of those kind of guys that takes what he does and does it 100 percent and doesn’t ask anything else out of it,” he said. “I guess it’s kind of one of those guys that what you’d hope he’d be off the field, he is, in my opinion. In my meetings. “I used to say that about Dan, about Marino. I’m not comparing because they’re different. But Dan off the field was what you would hope he would be. I think what you would hope that [Tebow] would be, that’s what I’ve seen.”
