... if Revis had suffered a season-ending injury in the preseason. Obviously not trying to jinx anything or troll, but I'm curious to gauge how dependent this team is on Revis... I think a strong case could be made that no team is going to be more reliant on a non-quarterback this upcoming season.
8-8, 9-7. It's going to take core injuries or a breakout season by Mark Sanchez to move the needle much.
I think you're underestimating how EVERYTHING we do on defense excels, if not directly stems, from Revis's smothering coverage- how many guys we have in the box, how many guys we send into push rush, the ability to effectively remove the opposing team's best receiver, etc.
Nope, I'm not. Revis was just as smothering last year... 8-8. I don't deny how good Revis is, but if teams find other ways to score points, it doesn't really matter that Revis' guy is held to 6 catches for 54 yards. We gave up 19 or more points 11 times last season, 29 points 6 times. Yes Revis is good, but does it change games? It may change how they score, but so far hasn't kept a lot of teams from scoring.
10-6 With Revis 7-9 without. If Kyle Wilson covers the #2 WR, he will get targeted all day long. Who will cover the slot? Lankster? Yeah, Im not too confident about that. Its not like we have the best pass rush in the league. Even 7 wins might be too generous, but we have a weak schedule. Revis means that much to this team.
So you think our Pass D will be top 5 again this year with Cromartie and Wilson starting? Lankster covering the slot? Who would you give safety help to, Wilson? Lankster? Cromartie might be able to sustain the #1 spot, but I have my doubts about Wilson and Lankster. Also, with Revis in there, Jets D is designed as if we have 12 players on the field.
No, what I'm saying is, as good as Revis is, he can only cover one guy. If the rest of the defense gives up 30 points, all of Revis' coverage during the game is film highlights, nothing more. Losing 30-17 with Revis is no better than losing 40-17 without him. He's a play maker for sure, the best in the game right now, but unless the defense as a whole performs, only the final score changes, not the outcome.
I think what is getting lost is how Revis makes our solid front seven into a great seven (especially with pass rush). He frees up soooo much more playcalling flexibility for our D.... its not just that he can take over one side of the field.
without Revis Island 6-10 because it doesn't come down to giving up an extra TD or so, it comes down to our entire defensive scheme and how dependent we are on great man coverage. safety play can be directed away from Revis and his covered man. without revis and cro's solid man coverage Rex wouldn't blitz half as much because Kyle or anybody lower on the depth chart would get torched on those plays.
