Are there any free agent RT we could pick up? How about any potential camp casualties? Above average size hobos? Hodor?
If you believe this, then you didn't even watch Conner on Saturday night. He made a number of huge blocks, including one where he crushed a DT head-on - you could hear the hit on TV amid the crowd noise and the idiotic blabber from the booth crew. But a great block by a FB is pretty much useless when the right side of the line collapses on the runner.
This sequence annoyed me the most, too. We got a decent gain on first down off a turnover, then can't run for a yard? Talk all you want about Sanchez, Tebow, etc, this is the essence of our problems right here, it all starts up front. I was hoping for a deep ball on the first play off the INT but with no blocking or WRs I guess that wasn't an option.
why show it now? what are the benefits? so we could say we picked up a 1st down or scored pts in preseason?
To get a little flow in a game, build a little confidence for the offense? You're right, it's nothing important as far as the season goes, but it could have been a moral boost and it's something we're going to have to try at some point.
I agree we needed more game reps for the offense at that point, but you still don't show a play you'll need in a real game. That's a situation where it's just about attitude, especially 4th and inches. You've watched these guys taking victory laps and bows for the past six months and you can't drive them off the ball one foot? To me that was the most distressing sequence of the game.
because practice and repetition makes you better? not much suprise in hey tebow is in on 4th and 1 maybe he will run it. its not like your turning over the files on who killed JFK. sure maybe you dont run the tebow fake end around flea flicker. but having team in with the jumbo package and plowing forward isnt gonna hurt. getting a first down their also does stuff like allow us to run more plays, maybe run some in the redzone, maybe gain some confidence for some players, etc...
Once again, the problem on 4th and inches was in the execution, not the call. It's inches, drive them off the fucking ball and get the first down, that simple. No tricks needed.
I would like to see the O in a rythym so I agree but not at the risk of giving something up they could surprise Buf w/ in week 1. I expect tebow will be in on those 3rd and 4th and 1's.
Agreed. Getting fancy in situations like that can hurt more than they help. Just ram it down their throat. If you have a semi-competent Oline it should work fine. I wouldn't even say it's the RB's problem, the Oline should clear at least a few feet for them so they can get the few inches needed.
A lot of times you don't even fool around with a handoff, the QB just takes the snap and plunges forward. I understand not sending Sanchez into the Giants line in a pre-season game, but in real games I've seen Brady do it, you normally don't get hurt that way. Maybe that's where we bring Tebow in and see if anyone can stop him from gaining a few inches, my guess is they can't.
Definitely. In a game situation you just snap it and everyone push forward including the QB and you're pretty likely to get the few inches, especially if you make it seem like you're giving it to one of the RBs so the defense has to respect that you might go to one of them on a sweep or something. But, yeah, potentially injuring Sanchez for a new set of downs in a pre-season game? That'd be pretty idiotic. But maybe Tebow does come in in situations like that, although that makes it a bit more obvious that the QB is going to hold on to it than if it's Sanchez.
