Tonight they had Cruz and a bunch of rookies and former special teamers. The WRs other the Cruz had a total of 13 receptions last year or were playing in college. The Giants were not running their regular season offence, had no run game (like last year) and had one starter at WR who had any serious time on the field.
The jets had field position tonight. I feel like they will continue that w/ a Westoff coached ST. If they can get points - any points - they will have a chance in every game cuz their D is that good. It sucks to wish for FG's, but that's their strength...D & ST's.
No shit they weren't running their regular offense, I ALREADY MENTIONED THAT TWICE. But you cannot discount Eli in my opinion. What do you think other teams are doing? Using their most advanced offensive plans? Every team is running vanilla offenses, and not every defensive is shutting down the opposing offenses. Eli is the anchor to that offense, and we were able to shut it down, Vanilla or not, you cannot look at this defense and say that they're bad. I'm not here saying their elite, or anything -- but that they did very well today.
Don't like this bend but don't break defense. Stupid penalties, it can all be corrected though. Still fearful of the defense getting overworked with all the 3 and outs.
And I'm saying they did very well against a crippled offense that was already one dimensional even at full strength, and that was nowhere near full strength tonight. So yeay, the Jets defense shut down a Giants offense with one arm tied behind it's back and dragging a ball and chain on its leg. Woo-fucking-hoo. I would hope that the Jets defense could manage that against any team with only one starting WR, no good TEs, and a bunch of dogs on the o-line and at RB, no matter who the QB is.
As you said, they had no running game last year and still won a superbowl. Their O-line while porous wasn't exactly THAT poor in the pass protection, it was certainly better than ours. All I'm saying is ELI alone, is a threat. Whether or not you want to give this defense credit, is up to you but between this game, and last game, they've been shutting down offenses and I'm happy to see that. I don't care how crippled or elite the offenses are, It's still a good thing to see.
Agreed. The defense looked good. It's nice to see Landry making plays. Loved that hit on Cruz. The pick was nice, although very simple. Harris had some moments. Pace had some moments. Coples wasn't as good as last game, but he is slowly improving. Maybin looked good, had a blocked punt as well. Ellis is improving. Our D is set for years to come. We don't need any work on it, next year's draft should be all offense except maybe an OLB in there somewhere.
I wouldn't say we're set in defense, we still have to worry about Safety and hopefully we can lock up Revis, long term and obviously OLB..hopefully Davis pans out to be a solid draft pick. But Yes, we need to seriously start focusing on Offense. jI think if we can keep the integrity and stability/greatness of our defense, we can truly be a powerhouse team if we can set up a competent offense. We need to do it soon before our defense becomes too old/ineffective. I believe in Sanchez but just imagining this team with an elite QB and we can easily win a SB I think. Great defense, which we'll probably always have thanks to Rex, all we're missing is an adequate offense.
The defense is pretty much always pretty good. There not the problem. Then you add a healthy Pouha and Coples and DeMario. Should be fun.
I agree. With safety, a lot of it boils down to Landry and how the young guys perform. If Landry has a good year, he gets a contract. Bell is probably just a temp fix until a young guy steps up or we can get a decent mid round safety draft pick. But yeah, even if our defense has a few weaknesses it still pales in comparison to the offensive woahs. Our D is good enough to keep opponents scoring low. All we need to succeed with this D is a slightly above average offense. Sanchez does look like he's going to click this year. I hope our receivers are ready to go by game 1. Funny that he had like an 80% completion percentage today throwing mostly to Turner, Keller and Connor. Hopefully Connor's just catching because of the lack of receivers right now.
Don't know if it was bend but don't break of we just have very slow front 7 and can't do anything other thank just defend the run and try to hold out ground.
To me it just seems like he needs to be more consistent with his technique, especially keeping his pad level low. When he maintains his leverage he's usually pretty good. Even if he's a downgrade and inconsistent, I would consider trading Pouha for a starting RT at this point. I don't know if that's even a remote possibility, but something needs to be done.
Was very impressed with the defense, especially Bart Scott. Scott looked faster than he did when we first signed him. You can really tell this 'speed' aspect of defense they preached all offseason. Defensive players were swarming the ball last night, especially Harris, Scott, and Landry.
Good point. He has been a sold player, but it is good to see everyone else being able to step up. Devito seems to be playing better on passing downs too. We don't have stupid turnovers from the ST and O, we could make the playoffs with this defense. And we were not running our regular season offense and had 0 wide receivers who had any serious time on the field. It's hard to realize how much we should weight preseason, but we do have 2 new safeties and a new DL coming into the system. Also Thomas coming back from injury. It's good for them to seem like they assimilating well. The offense on the other, seems to be in funk.
The Jets also had the same exact problem, except nobody played of Cruz' caliber. We had a rookie and a backup as our #1 and #2. #3 also a rook. Cruz > than any receiver we played yesterday. Sanchez: 9/11 59 yards 0 TD 1 INT Manning: 7/14 62 yards 0 TD 1 INT Not much difference there besides higher comp %, despite Manning at least having one of his good receivers playing.
Truth is we played in the red zone alot better then we played Def in general. Eli moved the ball down field with no effort was way to easy. Our linebackers looked horrid in pass coverage. It was once we hit the red zone they went run and tested the outside with passing that we stuffed them up. Both those FG's could have easily been TD's. I get the whole basic play calling and not showing our hand but you guys cant believe while the rest of the league gets hands on the QB we are running such a dumbed down version of our game plan that its the reason we arent getting to the QB. Im slightly worried at this point that i will be replacing a screen damaged tv this season.
