Jets | Alailefaleula had his bell rung Tue, 22 Aug 2006 10:29:21 -0700 Tom Rock, of Newsday, reports New York Jets DL Tui Alailefaleula (head) spent some time on the sideline Monday, Aug. 21, after he had his "bell rung." Jets | Clemens can land No. 2 QB spot Tue, 22 Aug 2006 10:27:27 -0700 Tom Rock, of Newsday, reports New York Jets head coach Eric Mangini said he has no philosophical problem with rookie QB Kellen Clemens being the team's No. 2 quarterback, and he also said that QB Patrick Ramsey's extended contract signed before training camp will play no role in determining the quarterback pecking order. Jets | Martin not at the team's facilities Tue, 22 Aug 2006 10:24:41 -0700 Tom Rock, of Newsday, reports New York Jets RB Curtis Martin (knee) is away from the team's complex Tuesday, Aug. 22, for personal reasons which head coach Eric Mangini insisted were non-medical. Jets | Barlow resting Tuesday Tue, 22 Aug 2006 10:20:47 -0700 Tom Rock, of Newsday, reports New York Jets RB Kevan Barlow is not practicing with the team Tuesday, Aug. 22. He is getting some rest from the last couple of hectic days he has had. Head coach Eric Mangini said Barlow's day off does not preclude him from Friday's game, Aug. 25, against the New York Giants, but the coach said he will be cautious in using the running back.
How in the hell is Barlow gonna play in a game this week when he's been given a day off to "rest"? He hasn't been a Jet long enough to order a pizza yet.. Un F'n believable..... I'm trying to keep faith with this new CS but dayum, give us some credit here. We're all not stupid...
I imagine that going straight from West coast time to East coast time on a red eye, followed by an intensive physical and then a full practice may be a little bit tiring. Let the guy adjust to the time difference and study the play book.
Great.. Does he get the rest of the week off? Did he give the NFL and the 49'ers a two week notice? How does this work? Why isn't he on the field? Is there some precedent here?
Look, I see your point and wondered the same thing. However, think about it. He got here Monday on the red eye, didn't sleep went right to practice. I know I know, if I had to do it too, I'd be expected to work, but I am thinking the guy is being forced to move CROSS COUNTRY, it may not be the worst thing in the world to give him 1 day to get everything organized in terms of his belongings/etc.
Geeze, CMan, go back to bed and get back up on the other side. The guy took a red eye Sunday night, went through the physical in Monday and hit the field Monday afternoon. You want to run him out there today? players get hurt when they are tired. I'm sure he's getting some classroom time. He has to have some freakin idea of the play calls before he practices.... geeze.
I can think of a few things.... 1. protect your investment 2. like the post above said...he took the redeye flight and is not well rested and it does take time to adjust to the zone change 3. he needs to learn the terminology, plays and audible calls...what's the point of practicing if you don't know what's going on? I have some more points but I gotta go...cya
I have no problem with Barlow being given a day off. Given the way that Mangini has been working his players this camp, I don't think he would have given him the day to rest unless he really needed it. And going by the past couple of days for him, it's understandable that he would.
Mixed messages here. Either he's gonna play or not. If not, then fine. All this cloak and dagger stuff is getting old real quick.
Please forgive me for holding a Professional, Millionaire Athelete to the same standards as I'm held to every day. So he took a Redeye from Frisco. That means he can't be at the facility getting his head into the playbook? I can see giving him some time off true, but not until he's at least somewhat familiar with the "plan". Please remember we only have 3 weeks until Opening Day and if this guy is gonna contribute, his learning curb is gonna be steep. He can rest when the season is over. He's a professional athelete, not one of us. He has to be judged and held to a higher standard than the rest of us as well..
All that means is as of now he's not sure if Barlow's playing this weekend. The guy just got in and hasn't had a full practice yet, how can Mangini decide whether he's playing or not before even getting a good look at him in practice? It's only Tuesday.
You and I both know that if it were US here, this wouldn't be an issue. However, this is a professional Football Player who is better conditioned physically than anyone here. He's not Joe 6pack. He can't be judged as one of us nor is he compensated as we are. We don't live in that world and so, its quite possible that the rules are different for them than it is for us. That doesn't mean I have to agree with it..
Then keep him on the bench until Mangini, HC of the NYJ's, feels he's ready. I don't have a problem with Barlow learning the system. Allow him the time to do that. Its not that revealing to come out and say: "We're gonna let Kevin get up to speed with our system before we play him...". That's not giving away the season's playbook at all.. This cloak and dagger, 007 nonsense is old and unnessesary..
He said he allowed Barlow to go "get some sleep" because he's barely rested since Sunday when everything was set in motion. What exactly is he hiding there? The guy is beat. He's already been to team meetings and was out with the team a bit Monday. I just really dont see anything to get upset about.
Not upset man. I don't let things I have no control over upset me in the least. My life is waay more interesting than that.. Watch how things unfold in the remainder of the preseason. This will probably provide more insight than the KGB inspired philosphy at Jets HQ presently..
