I know that Mangini always seems to be preaching hard work and smart plays on the football field. He also likes to talk a lot about versatility. Strait hasn't been bad at safety, but he also hasn't stuck on. Erik Coleman isn't a WOW me safety either, but they are both strong tacklers fit to be playing next to a hopeful playmaker in Kerry Rhodes. As I was watching Justin Miller play I noticed that he hits like a truck. He's not that good of a tackler, but he does hit hard when he gets the chance and usually drills the receiver. I think he may be better fitted to play safety. I know that we drafted him as a corner and all, but looking at his skillsets and how he's playing... He's really not the man up corner we thought he'd be. His skillsets include the ballhawking ability, and the fact that he flies to the ball. He has trouble sticking with receivers one on one and passes are always caught in front of him I think he'd have much more of an impact playing the free safety spot at times, because of the fact that he isn't that good of a man to man corner. He plays much better when he can sit in a zone and jump in front of a ball or hit the receiver hard right as they catch it. It amazed me how well he timed the routes in terms of hitting the receiver right when they catch it, but it didn't wow me that he was really just trying to time them and not intercept the ball. He doesn't seem like a fit at cornerback and with the fact that Mangini is always screaming for versatility it just gave me the idea that he should be auditioned at safety and move Strait back to nickel corner where he can sit in zones and let Barrett and Dyson man the outside.
I will say he looked pretty bad at times last night. The Jets kept blitzing and leaving him on an island one on one against recievers, and he gave up some soft yardage.
I disagree completely. I watched Miller pretty closely during the replay of last night, and he has all the makings of a very good corner. Good hips, jumping ability, speed and tackles well. He obviously has somethings to learn in terms of pattern recognition and such...but that will come w/ time. He was not getting beat deep or getting out muscled..he simply got beat from not recognizing the given pattern the reciever was running. That kind of skill comes w/ time and experience.. Miller will be fine at CB.
not to mention this kid is fast as hell. Its is his second year, lets just chill for we try to change positions already.
I think we need all of the CB help we can get right now and Justin Miller has the most upside of any of our corners.
CB is one of the hardest positions to play in the NFL up there with QB and Oline..this is only his 2nd year, but this guy has the tools to be great.
Miller has been solid in my opinion. And last night I thought he played well. He has the physical abilities to be a SHUT DOWN corner in the nfl... His attitude was the reason he dropped from round 1.
I agree. I started a post a while back entitled "This Justin Miller hype baffles me." He has shown us nothing in terms of cover skills. The only thing he is good at defensively is that he hits extremely hard. I know people are very down on Barrett, but he is a much better cover corner than miller.
Well Barrett had INT last night didn't he? I agree CB is probally the toughest position, especially with all the new rule changes, you can barely even touch the guy. A little experience for JM will go a long ass way. Plus you can never have to many great special teamers. Which also a good upside of JM. There's three facets of football. Offense Defense, and special teams. And sometimes special teams can be the real dagger in a game too.
just as he had an off night (like last night), he also played very well at times. check out the Carolina game last year, and watch how well he glued to Steve Smith. How many CB's (especially rookies) did that last year? That doesn't mean he'll be a great CB, just like last night's performance doesn't mean he's doomed. let's chill out, and allow Miller a bit of a learning curve while Mangini and Co. coach him up. cheers
You can't take one of our most athletic DB's and just move him to S because he hits hard. CB is the hardest position to get good players for. They need good hips, speed and an understanding of what's going on with the play. Miller has the first two and is working on the third. Safeties are often the DB's that can't cut it as a corner. Rhodes I think is an exception to that rule. Coleman is not.
i don't mean to rag on Barrett because I don't think he's all that bad but... last year, many of his INT's came from terrible passes that went directly to him; meaning, it was moreso the QB's error rather than Barrett's coverage/playmaking. if you watch that highlight video or just review Barrett's INT last night, you'll notice he trailed the WR and the pass was thrown way behind, right to Barrett. now, if that's a good QB like Brady, Manning, or Palmer, that pass may go for a big gain and possibly a TD; not something to feel very confident about. like i said, Barrett is decent, but Miller seemingly has a ton more potential than him. cheers
I'm not as concerned with our CBs as you are....Dyson, Miller, Barrett, Mickens, Strait.........will be fine. On the defensive side, I'm more concerned with our D-line and lack of pass rush and run-stuffing ability.
for some reason i'm not sure if miller is playing back on his own or being told to play back..dunno...i watched the replay and its almost as if he's holding back...
Did you watch Ty Law last year??? He was playing in the parking Lot!! Miller is fine and played well last night! He had some great open field tackles and never got beaten deep. There's many other issues on this team to be concerned with.
Ehhh, interesting concept of putting him at safety has the size and speed. I don't think its worth it putting him a an unnatural position. He's maturing as a corner and may be a great one to come.
im gonna go out on a limb and say if Mangini thought his skills were best suited at safety...he would have moved him instead of strait....his skills are for being a CB....he just needs to develope....he does hit like a truck though...my goodness!
