Do we still need to address FULLBACK?

Askew is a better runner/receiver than he is a blocker, we signed Jamar Martin to be a blocking FB and Stacey Tutt was supposed to see time at the position... unfortunately I did not catch the game in preseason week 2, but I would like to know how the current FBs performed. I would assume there was better run-blocking by looking at the rushing totals. If we haven't fixed the problem by preseason week 4 here is a situation we should monitor...

Cowboys | Polite on the bubble
    Sat, 19 Aug 2006 19:18:49 -0700

Clarence E. Hill Jr., of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, reports Dallas Cowboys FB Lousaka Polite might be on the bubble to make the team. The use of two-tight end sets has eliminated the need for a fullback. Polite is trying to find his way on the roster as a H-back.

Man, I still wish we had Jerald Sowell. He was a solid blocker and was serviceable in the passing game.

Yes sir, Sowell would have stabilized this backfield.

I still don't understand why they let him go. He was good, pretty sure he was affordable, character guy. I didn't like that cut.

You're suggesting to pick up a player that you just said we don't need. H-back role = receiver, and limited role as a blocker. Chris Cooley plays it, and rarely blocks. If they have a blocking situation Royal comes in for Washington. Askew made some fine blocks tonight. It was the tightend position that looked horrible. Baker can't pickup a blitz and Jolley is too tall and lanky to block anyone but a defensive back.

Actually, thats not the case. The news update clearly says he is "trying" to make the team as an H-Back, because they have no need for him in the role of FB. Unfortunately, Lousaka has primarily been used as a blocking FB, the fact that he is a solid receiver out of the backfield is just a bonus. I am suggesting we watch his status with Dallas because we have 1 FB that can block (J. Martin) and 1 FB that can catch (Askew). We would actually be able to use Lousaka at FB, not audition him at H-back (which is not his natural position) and he would give us one player that is capable of both aspects of the game at the FB position.

Nah... His blocking is pretty medicore/lousy.

We have Jamar Martin, who is supposedly a very good blocker. Louiska Polite's a good player though.

  10. For some odd reason it is being overlooked that perhaps we WANT more of a recieving /H Back type of FB than a blocker. Mangini is a Pats disciple...None of the fullbacks the Pats have employed in the last several years have been grind it up the middle blocking type FB's. Instead they have guys who are good w/ screens, blitz pick-ups and short receptions over the middle.

We ourselves have had some H back types over the last decade or so who were moreso recievers than so blockers. Richie Anderson and Keith Byars come to mind. Heck when Sowell first came to us from Green Bay, he was an awful blocker and made his living on special teams and short passes over the middle. He developed quality blocking skills over time.

Recieving skills, speed, and athleticism is what Askew brings to the table at FB. Yes they brought in Martin...but i believe he was brought in specifically for short yardage situations and special teams.

I get the feeling we are not in the market for a lead blocking bruiser for the first team.

If a guys mindset is to try and make a team as an H-back, then I really don't think we have a need for him. Askew is fine and he runs like a load, and can throw some nice blocks. It's tough to see what Askew can do when theres penetration into the backfield like there was in the first game.

I always thought the reverse of Sowell, very good in the passing game and servicable blocker. His blocking did seem to improve every year though. Also he was a much better runner than people gave him credit for. He was quite the athlete in Tulane. Prior to Herm the perm, he use to get some carries and looked good. Parcells use to run Sowell off of single back formations and he was very effective.

In regards to the thread, yes we do need a FB. I wished we drafted Lawrence Vickers out of Colorado. He is Sowell clone and has looked pretty good in limited pre-season time w/ Cleveland.
