I look at this move as the cost of an upgrade in talent. With Coples coming in, it became a numbers game. Both Dixon & Devito are important leaders who have managed to stay healthy, while RP doesn't appear to be as crucial in the lockeroom as well as the fact he has a history of injuries.
They also signed Jay Richardson a few weeks back which provides another big body fighting for a job. I liked Pito but thought he was JAG last year after the injury. He seems to be a bit over rated by Jets fans sort of like Westerman was. Wish him well...
Last year was his first following the injury but I'd trust rex's opinion so while surprised there had to be good reason to make the move.
He always kind of sucked. he's the classic example of a total jag who got hyped by rexy. The problem is some of us bought the hype. Sent from my LG-P999 using Tapatalk 2
Since we got to see him in Hard Knocks, it seems like a lot more than just a simple roster cut to me. Normally, I'm not so sad when players are cut but now I really feel for this guy. Watching him on tv as a Jet made him one of my favorite players even though he wasn't one of the stars of big producers. I hope that he'll land on his feet with some other team. These fringe players don't collect the big checks and have such short careers.
You just have to keep reminding yourself that when it boils down to it, it's a business with "limited" ( ) money and roster spots available. While I am sad to see Ropati go and hope that he finds work and success anywhere besides AFCE, I am also happy that this... 1) Saved us a mil or so dollars 2) Allowed the upgrade to Josh Brown Getting sentimental in this business you cannot. Or else roster spots will fill up very quickly with guys not best suited for the direction of interest for the team
Are you serious? Devito is a great run stopper and Ropati was good for nothing. Seriously he was pretty bad. Any rookie from camp can do what he did.
Hah, no kidding. Ropati was a guy I wanted to be good just because he was so huge. The fact of the matter though, is he wasn't.
It was a musical chairs kind of deal no doubt. Dixon impressed me last year. He wasn't going to leave. Ellis they still want to see what he's got. DeVito will not start, but he's still a good player. Who should have been cut instead of RP?
People tend to forget that we now are lucky enough to have DL-coach Karl Dunbar on our coaching staff! We will see even more 4-3 fronts in the season 2012/2013; Ropati Pitoitua just doesn't fit this new role: He tends to play a bit too high for a 4-3 DT and other players like Mike DeVito, Marcus Dixon and Jay Richardson seem to be more versatile and therefore better suited for our hybrid-system of fronts. Just look what Dunbar has done with the Bears' DL (Tommie Harris, Tank Johnson) and the Vikes' DL ("Williams Wall", Jared Allen). He will be able to work with very talented players here; Mo Wilkerson and Q. Coples will be his stars in this DL.
Surprising. I thought he was solid run stuffer. Anybody know how much cap space this saves? Wasn't Rex saying something about depth on the DL being important...
I think the cut saves about 700k of cap space. BTW: Cutting DeVito would've saved quite a bit more (and: No, I'm not rooting for a DeVito-cut; it's just a sign for me, that DeVito is - rightly! - much more important in the eyes of the FO). Coples, DeVito, Dixon, Wilkerson, Richardson, Ellis, Pouha, Tevaseu (not to mention guys like Pace as hybrid OLB-DE options) - seems like enough DL-depth at this point in the season (!) for me.
i'm a little suprised, as i liked him for depth. Dixon really came on last year, and impressed me. Whenever i saw penetration from the interior line, i would rewind to see who it was. Majority of time it was Dixon, and that's exactly what the Jets need more of, and prob why they drafted Coples. The other lineman, including Ropati, just weren't getting that done. I like the Josh Brown signing as a side note.
