I know there are a number of you fine gentlemen who spend quite a bit more time than I do on the draft and the thinking that typically goes into projecting, and the eventually drafting, a player in a particular round, so I'm curious to know what the reasons were for Ganaway being projected as a late round pick, and then lasting until the late 6th. Was it the system he played in? His ~4.6-4.7 40-time? His limited starting time? A combination of all? Quite honestly, I'm pumped that we drafted this kid and, outside of the massive potential Coples possesses, this is the player I'm most excited about from this draft class going into 2012. From what I've seen in the games I've downloaded, I think he'll have a great chance to thrive in this system if given the opportunity. Haven't seen too many posts on him, so I'm just wondering if I'm the only one...
one year wonder as a senior hurt him. Also I think playing in the same backfield as RGIII hurt him as well. If everybody is backing off the LOS to stop the passing game lead by the heisman winner, the RB is going to have some more holes to run through. Plus the fact he compares quite a bit to Shonn Greene might actually hurt him as well. Greene hasn't lived up to expectations so far in his career, and barring something insane, is likely to be allowed to walk after the season ends. Either way, calling a 6th round compensatory selection a steal before rookie minicamps is certainly a stretch, and most likely pure homerism. I like the kid, I think he has a bunch of potential, but can we at least let them practice before deciding if they are destined for NFL greatness or not?
Props for the videos!!! I am no draft guru but from what I see I am really excited about this kid as well. Here's what I saw: 1) Great Vision- he has a great first step and is not scared to make his decision to cut early. In the open field I am really impressed by his vision as well, even when running up the gut if he gets to the second level he makes great cuts. 2) Game Speed- Although it doesn't show with his 40 time, Ganaway looks to have some really elusive speed. Breaking away for huge gains and out running safeties and DBs is impressive @ his size 3) Tangible measurable's- His size and weight are definitely a plus in our power running system. Very excited to see him and Greene wear down a D this fall.
I think Rule did an excellent job explaining Ganaway's situation. Ganaway wasn't the focal point of Baylor's offense and while playing very well at times and showing flashes of his potential, thru no fault of his own, it wasn't consistent.
Ganaway looks pretty impressive, but Griffin looked pretty good too! I had no idea he was that mobile and he explodes off the line with a mean streak.
its great that Ganaway did only start one year - the less mileage these runners have on them the better. edit: he shows some good speed around the 2:50 mark in the first video
If Powell, McKnight and Ganaway don't make a major impact this year, how can we let Greene walk? Who would be our RB? I would argue that Greene has had a decent career thus far and would be the number 1 back in roughly half of NFL teams. I like the guy; he always looks hurt but he's a warrior and, if we improve the OLine, he will improve.
At this point, no one in our backfield is great, so Im hoping that each back gets a fair share of carries/opportunities and maybe someone flourishes and turns into something special... We have all of these late round backs on our roster, I guess they are hoping that something sticks. I honestly hope Greene doesnt get 25 carries a game, because he isnt a workhorse... If we can feed the hot hand, I would be much happier. I like Ganaway. But part of me doesnt see that raw power that you look for from a 240 pound back. IMO, a back that big should never be brought down on first contact and should just be a straight up recking ball. His burst and speed are pretty solid for someone his size... Maybe a jack of all trades, but a master of none type player. We’ll see though.
Greene going into this season, is going to be 27. Heading into next year, he’ll be 28. For a back that hasnt proved much of anything, Im not sure if we can match his asking price and tie ourselves to mediocrity at the RB position again. I honestly dont see how one of those 3 cant put up similar production to Greene- he’s nothing special and cant even play on 3rd down. I honestly dont think he would even start on 3/4 of the teams in the NFL, and on some teams he wouldnt even be the number 2 back. Factor in his age, injury history, mediocrity, cant play on 3rd down, ect... and Im not sure why we would want to give him a multi year deal.
3 of his touchdowns in the end zone on that Washington highlight clip, he followed the big man RGII right through the hole. A combo of him and Tebow running some option (if that's one of the roles the Jets intend to use Tebow in) could be dangerous.
Even though I called Powell the next James Starks overall as a runner(Which I think he can be), I think Ganaway can be that 6th round steal type like Starks was. Have a good feeling he's gonna work out greatly for Sparano.
Geez Greene's that old? He just got drafted in 2009 too...man I thought he was like 24 years old not 27.
Even if defenses were playing off, I still would have expected him to go higher than round 6. He shows great vision, solid cuts, moves north/south with little hesitation, and pass blocks no worse than the average prospect... he's just well rounded IMO, with the only question marks (I presume?) being his catching ability. And I think Greene's two primary hindrances thus far have been inconsistent QB play (teams often stacking the box), and his being injury prone. I wouldn't necessarily consider him a disappointment just yet. I didn't call him a future HoFer, I just said I'm excited about a guy who looks like he'll compete for serious playing time. And any time you get a starter or, possibly in this case, a quality backup at RB in the 6th, I'd call it a steal. I was thinking the same thing. Wouldn't be surprised to see him surpass Vlad during TC (though, I know that's not saying much). Agreed!
This is part of the reason I feel he has a great chance for success in this system. Greene has shown at times he can be that bruising back, while Ganaway seems to be the back who can get those bigger chunks of yards on earlier downs - he reminds me a lot of the numerous backs who came out of Denver/Shanahan's offense for years, just making that one cut and then getting upfield once you find the hole. If McKnight continues to improve as a 3rd down back, I think we'll be in great shape this season. If it were any other offense I wouldn't expect much from Ganaway this season. But Rex/Sparano are obviously going to give him plenty of opportunities.
Yeah, its really surprising once you find out... He’ll be entering his second contract at age 28, which for a RB, isnt a bonus by any means. I dont see how we could justify bringing him back for second contract unless his market is dead and he only asks for something very cheap.
That's good to hear. It's good to have a back that can catch the ball. Greene hasn't been stellar with that, although McKnight has been decent. I see Powell being the odd RB out again this year.
