Everyone calls the Tebow pickup a "stupid" pickup, but imagine if he had been drafted in the 4th round, nobody would have complained. Now add 2 years experience, including most of 1 season starting and 2 playoff games. Also, don't forget the leadership qualities he brings to the locker room. Finally, the Jets have a legitimate backup for Sanchez! "When you look at our draft I know everybody's got everybody ahead of us, which I think is hilarious, I think we've had one heck of a draft and when you put Tim Tebow in there for our fourth-round pick it even looks better," Ryan said. It is comical but I have more faith in Sexy Rexy's talent evaluation than some idiotic talking head on a 4 letter TV network.
To speak objectively, what team is going to publically say "we fucked up. Worst draft in the NFL." less than a week later? 5 years from now, the numbers will speak for themselves about who did well and what not, but every team should fell confident today that they added a lot of good players to their roster. Can't wait for the rookie minicamp reports to come in this weekend.
Ducasse you have a strong case for. I think this off-season will write the final report on him. I think Conner is what he is meant to be a 5th round Full Back. Considering he wasn't utilized as much last year, his production had to be expected to drop. He does have good hands and hits like a truck.
The complaint about Tebow has little to do with his skills and a lot to do with the other stuff that is going to circulate around him and the Jets this season. He's an acceptable backup QB, given that he can come in the game and perform well in clutch time. The problem is that he's not actually going to be the backup QB for a lot of the season and he's going to be even more limited than Mark Sanchez in the starting role. There's a reason John Elway damn near strangled himself in the process of getting Tebow out of town.
Although I do like the Jets draft, it's obvious Rex comments are going to have heavy bias. The Jets could have traded all their picks for entire draft for #3 and took Trent and Rex/Tanny are still going to say they did an awesome job. Right now, every coach/gm should be saying how great their team did on the draft.
Like many were willing to throw Brick under the bus all too soon, so is it the case with Vlad. This will be his make or break season and I expect a lot of crow to be eaten by many here by the end of the year. I also expect big ugly to anchor that right side for many years to come
Brick was a full time starter day one. It was a solid pick and he has been solid since the first day he was put on the line. Vlad has a ton of work to do to even begin to anchor the right side of the line. I hope you're right.
Everyone called him Dibustashaw until 2009. He started right away but people were calling for his head.
I think some of the frustration from the draft is really more about frustration with the overall offseason. The Jets' glaring offensive weakness last season was the tackle position, where I believe Hunter and Brick combined to allow more than 15 sacks, and the constant pressure basically ruined Sanchez' season. I liked every pick they made - Coples is a good pick to continue to build the all important d-line (see: Giants SB) and Hill has great value in the second. They needed a fast linebacker and they took a flyer on a couple of safeties. But I don't care who you have lined up at receiver, if you can't stop the pass rush, then you can't win. Just look what happened against Baltimore and the Giants last year, and even the last Dolphins game. Santonio is a jerk, but he was right. Maybe they could only run quick slants because the offensive line could not hold on long enough, and I didn't exactly see big holes for Greene or Tomlinson opening up. The line is the most important part of the team, and the Jets did not address it at all.
Brick was competent from day one. He wasn't an outright stud from day one and he was a little light for his frame and got pushed a lot. Duccase was an outright liability to put on the field with the exception of power runs.
So Rex said they had a hell of a draft and Tebow is a winner. Yawn. Now that the draft is over the media is going to try to stretch every tiny comment into an article while we get beat in the head with one of the most boring spectacles in all of sports - regular season baseball. When it comes to the summer I'd much prefer to play sports than follow them.
The thing is, you can just about always look and find players that you might have wanted. It's only a problem IF that player turns out to be someone like Peyton Manning. You know, a "best of the generation" type player. Instead of focusing on who was missed, I'd rather look at who we actually got. All in all, I'd say that it was a very good draft this year and that we got a number of players who will make a pretty big impact. As to O-line and Hunter, I readily admit that I'm new to the Jets and might be in the dark, but aren't we switching from a ZBS to a man blocking scheme ? Don't we have a new OC who will probably institute different protection schemes ? Might these things bode well for Hunter, and we might actually see an improvement in his play ?
The problem i have with rex is not his evaluation of single players or picks. The problem is that there is no system to the way he goes about business, all his support of certain picks/players are totally ad hoc and something he makes up as he goes. Tebow does not fit anything the jets were talking about doing 6 months earlier, but now it fits right into Rex's strategy?!
Ummm, best I can recall, the "strategy" the Jets were using 6 months ago didn't work, did it ? When a strategy isn't working, coming up with a new one is actually a pretty smart thing to do.
