I couldnt give 2 shits about kids taking some small advantage of their status as college players. especially when the vast majority of these players come from disadvantaged backgrounds
I love this. 'There was an allegation against Coples, in relation to which he had irrefutable documentary proof of innocence, BUT I'M GOING TO MENTION IT ANYWAY AS A POTENTIAL CONCERN.'
SMH if he would have eaten food at Robert Quinn's draft party he would have gotten in trouble by the NCAA, thats a damns shame the rules they have, these kids have nothing, cant get anything for 3+ years They expect these guys to be poor, have no finances at all, cant take a Gatorade, a sandwich anything smfh they need to fix these rules because its becoming absurd
Actually it was a 1000 times better than anything I would have expected from Cimini. I just think we needed an OLB more than a DE. We better find one in the next couple of rounds. Westerman is gone less they forget.
Ncaa is the master and the colleges are the plantations. Its just such a shame how for a college education that cost 100k they hem thease kids up for four years, while they make millions of thier talent.
This is a serious knock on the kid by Cimini. He'd be a much better draft pick if he hadn't sancked on those free coconut-encrusted chicken fingers at the party. Who TF does he think he is? I have serious character issue concerns now.
Cimini has a duty to report this type of information b/c this is the gamble associated with Coples. There are things I don't like about Cimini (The whole druggie incident was ridiculous) but as I get older I am beginning to appreciate his work as the best amo0ng a lousy group of Jet beat writers. Mehta,Vretras & Co are all good people but none of them provide the X's & O's/front office insight that Rich does. Personally, I think the concerns with Coples can be put to rest given all I've read about out how much stock the Jets put on investigating into character & behavior off the field. If the scouting Dept. signed off on his off the field &Rex signed off on his motor(after working him out personally) beyond those 2 aspects he's a freakishly talented prospect who was close to unblockable at the senior bowl.
I was just being facetious about Cimini's knock that Coples accepted some freebies: "In May, 2011, Coples was investigated by the NCAA for his presence at a post-draft party in Washington D.C. He attended with former North Carolina teammates Robert Quinn and Marvin Austin, who was chosen by the Giants in the second round. The NCAA wanted to know how Coples paid for his travel to the party, who paid for his admission and his hotel, and if he accepted any free food or drink." I mean, who TF cares if he had some free coconut shrimp at a cocktail party?
I didn't read a single word of the above article. Still I've got that tension in my stomach like I just read it and am ready to strangle him. At least I saved time.
So the kid stayed out of trouble when he had potential to trip up, and then had concrete evidence to keep himself out of trouble. He also wasn't sucked in with the rest of his team and the problems there. I could spin a much more positive story out of what was reported than a negative one being attempted here
 Shoot, it's not like he got a free ride and actually had to pay for college like the rest of us!!!1 And frankly, considering all of the controversies surrounding his institution, coaches and teammates at the time; Cimini is clearly a dick because it wasn't more than worth mentioning that he was almost suspended for a whole year like Greg Little or Marvin Austin (idiot's note: even Cimini pointed out he was cleared). However did Coples take money like them? While we'll never know, his character issues only help to raise eyebrows. And no that's not what Cimini was insinuating, I am. Sometimes I swear folk automatically dismiss one of his articles without even reading it or being rational half the time and ultimately just come off like morons. Do I like Cimini? Nope, I can't say I like any beat writer for the Jets. But let's be real peoples [/Dr. Phil] All that said, if he doesn't decide to give up on the Jets like he did the Tar Heels his senior season, he's an incredible athlete and should be able to contribute.
Yea, that kills me. Basically, the NCAA is imposing a cover charge on free parties. So now I have to pre-game before a party because someone else paid for the food? Yet you aren't giving me any money to feed myself. So ridiculous
Well, at least we know that the college experience is preparing these young men for the real world. I mean, if one goes to a party, they know to keep all the receipts. I wouldn't have known that. [/irony]
Witch hunt against North Carolina. The NCAA probably was picking through the receptionists trash cans at home looking for stuff. What I take away from the whole thing is that one of the very few people to come out of the UNC scandals relatively whole was Quinton Coples. That, and his easy-going nature, bode well for his ability to roll with the punches in NY. If Rex stays around for awhile I think the Jets got a steal on 16. If he doesn't, well that pick is going to be the least of the Jets problems.
Cimini never provides anything about X's & O's. He often gets beat to headlines also even while working for ESPN.
Honestly I was surprised that both Coples and Ingram were available at 16. You can tell Rex and Tanny were thinking hard about which to pick. I trust Rex's judgement since he was there working him out. Coples was originally ranked to go as an early 1st, so we were lucky he was still available. I think he's going to be beastly for us. Ingram was good, but he's more of a short armed speedster and multi purpose player. I like the Coples pick, and think he will compliment Maybin very well.
