Taken from today's NYPost. Canizzaro was the author.. It shouldn't be much of a surprise that Tanny's been untouchable however, another Gholston bust OR failure to address the depth/obvious needs of this team and even RWJ would have to start paying more attention to something other than the headlines. Tanny's got 10 picks to work with and can't trade 4 of them (thank God) so, he might have to actually draft 10 guys for a change. Perhaps 1 of them will start and if we're abnormally lucky, 2 will stick as depth/filler. Stay tuned. The ride is only just begining..
The first round is setting up like last year except we're in a better slot. I think there's going to be a lot more reach for offense than people think, and we're going to have the pick of the litter on pass rushers sitting at 16. Very few people thought Mo would drop to where he did last year. If Tanny doesn't do anything stupid and can move up a few notches in the 2nd there's no reason we can't end up with two studs on defense and a contributing wideout. Wouldn't shock me at all if Decastro's the pick at 16 if he's there. They seemed to be really high on the guards in this class. Bottom line is if it's anyone of the names that have been batted around for us and they do turn out to be a bust, there's going to be a lot more people who were wrong than just Tanny. I'd say we're in good shape.
I don't have a problem with the overall message of the article, Tanny needs to make a good pick, but the examples used to back it up are not very good imo. I don't understand the comment that only 3 of our last years draft picks made "contributions". How many picks did we have last year, 7? 3/7 in their rookie year making contributions is amazing if consistently that. Also, letting Brad Smith walk was a great move. Buffalo offered him ridiculous money. So the writer is going back to Gholston to prove a first round bust. We all know Tanny whiffed there, no reason to bring it up. No GM, unless they are new this year and haven't drafted, has had 0 busts. Also, the last two years we drafted we picked late 20s which is considerably later than 16 let alone top 10. I feel like the writer could have focused more on chasing the wrong people in FA or certain draft day trades ups to make a better point. In the end I agree we need to hit on picks, and we have to hit on 16, which every Jets fan knew already. Agree with the message, not how the writer backs it up
This is kind of silly because Tannenbaum should be held accountable for a poor draft whether or not there are more people wrong than just him. If he drafted the player and he's busts than he didn't draft the right player - simple as that. He's got alot more resources/scouting than any draft pundit in the world. Tannenbaum has swung and missed on some 1st rounders, but his biggest problem is the mid-round draft picks. The Jets better get solid players in the 2nd and 3rd round this year or Mr. T should be fired. I don't know if were in as good shape as you say, I could see a Tannenbaum draft playing out like this. 1st round: Chandler Jones (turn out to bust) 2nd round: a Safety/CB, nothing special TRADE 3rd and change to get back into end of second: annual Tanny surprise - a TE or something That would leave the Jets relying on 5/6/7 round to add some of their biggest needs: OL, WR. That's not going to cut it. I know this is the worst case scenario, but Tannenbaum has had drafts like this and he could easily do such a thing again. Personally, I hope they stay put and draft OL.
the Ducasse pick said it all to me.....Mr.T/NYJ scouts are weakest point of the organization. that aint good.
Really a second round pick leads you to this conclusion? I'd say the owner and previous offensive coordinator were far weaker.
I don't think we had to match Buffalo's money for Brad Smith. It was the tunnel vision Tanny had for Nnamdi that gave Smith the motivation to look elsewhere. So we lost Brad Smith and didn't get Nnamdi, not exactly a good move. The reveling in the nickname Trader Mike is a bit sad. Trading isn't worth anything if it doesn't benefit the team. I think we have too many immediate needs and are shallow in the quality of the second string to trade away picks. But the way this off season is going we might sell the farm for Luck or RG3.
great article, and wow, we have 10 draft picks, I can't remember the last time we had that many. anybody know what round picks they are?
1/2/3/5/6/7 <- Given 5/6/7/7 or 6/6/7/7 <- This is my understanding with the comp picks. Don't get horny over these. Theoretically, you CAN luck out of the 6th and 7th round picks, but that's not likely to happen. If Jets get 1/2/3/4 with 4 comp picks, I'll be a happy camper.
Rex Ryan already said he's ready to make some huge trades so I went with 7...keeping the first through third and trading everything else lol
