Not too much needed to introduce this thread. I'm starting to really get nervous that they may actually be planning on bringing him back as the starting RT. This would be beyond ridiculous and I just don't understand why they preach "ground and pound" and "win in the trenches" yet fail to address the most glaring weakness by far last year at right tackle. I know the draft hasn't happened yet, but I don't see any possible way they make any meaningful additions on the o-line through the draft.
I've been saying all offseason that we should grab a RT in round 2 or 3. We can't risk him being as bad as he was last year, and we can't trust Vlad in pass protect at all. That being said, it's possible Hunter plays better in a man blocking scheme..... Either way, Week 1 vs Mario Williams, he'd better get some RB help blocking because that has disaster written all over it.
Well the reason it didn't happen is because there was no feasible way to address the weakness in Free Agency
I'll wait til TC to see what the Jets are really planning as far as RT goes. If it turns out to be Hunter starting then let's just hope Sanchez improves his progressions by about 2.5 seconds so he actually has a chance to survive
This is all part of the master plan. Game 1 Mario Williams knocks out Sanchez after blowing past Hunter in comes Tebow and we cut Hunter and sign a veteran to step in and the rest is history. GOD I HATE THAT I EVEN WROTE THAT!
If Wayne hunter goes into week 1 as the starting RT...... Let's just say Mrs. Tannenbaum will become a widow
I don't know what the Jets are planning on doing. They still have the draft and then the cuts in the summer to pick up a RT, but we will see if they are focused on keeping Hunter there. It was frustrating last year because while Hunter did a solid job filling in for Woody in 10, he struggled a lot this year.
Wasted thread..they already brought him back and guaranteed his 2.45 million dollar salary for this year. http://www.forbes.com/sites/chrissmith/2012/02/09/jets-make-huge-mistake-keeping-wayne-hunter/
Conner needs to be used more to specifically help hunter pass protect......barely saw the dude last year
And Sanchez is guaranteed $11.25 million this year, which makes one of his knees worth more than Hunter's whole contract this year. Leave Hunter at RT and you may be out both of them.
Remind me again...Wasn't Fist Pump an OL guy???? I think the biggest problem with Hunter, is his age. Lets face it, our last OC had pass patterns that took longer than a flight to Madrid, to develop. We have Ducasse, in the wings...if neither guy is capable, then the GM needs a beating.
See above. Sparano knows what he's got there. My suspicion, is lack of game planning against defenses (Von Miller), and shitty pass patterns (thanks Schotty), made not having a top flight guy like Woody obvious... You can hide Hunter if he's decent, and he probably is
There were a bunch of plays last year that really hurt the Jets where Hunter either got tossed like a rag doll or never made any significant contact with his assignment at all. He's 31 years old and he sucked last year. Guess what? It doesn't get any better from here on out. He's not even a guy who used to be good and had a bad off-year. For whatever reason Mike Tannenbaum thought that a 30 yrar old career backup was worth a 4 year $12 million contract. And I say whatever reason because none of the logical choices would have suggested anything but the result he got.
It truly is baffling. Whenever I hear Tanny/Rex discuss the protection issues last year the elephant in the room is Hunter. I just can't believe they are content with him or Vlad manning the position again. There has to be a plan they are working on so I'm holding off my frustration until training camp...
The only thing I can think of is that going from Schotty/Callahan (from what I read, most of the o-linemen had trouble with the zone blocking scheme that was implemented last yr) to Sparano will be MUCH easier, and Sparano thinks he can be an adequate RT. I still don't see it, but I'm sure Tanny and company have an actual plan to address this situation; possibly some summer TC cuts they foresee.
New OL coach says that he has asked all the O-linemen to slim down and become quicker off the snap, meanwhile after recieving his playbook, Slauson stated that all the plays are the same but that the terminology and reads have been dumbed down. Therefore early indications are that the Jets are sticking with a zone blocking scheme & are just tweaking it to become more user friendly. I do not believe Hunter has any chance of starting in 12. He's here to do what he has done best...be the primary back-up swing tackle. The starting RT position will boil down to how far Ducasse has come. If he fails to mature mentally, the starting RT will come via FA or perhaps a 2nd day draft pick
