Nothing has been announced yet other than Payton reached out to Parcells to see if he would coach the Saints.
wow: While seeking the counsel of his former boss and mentor, Bill Parcells, New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton has broached the idea of Parcells becoming the interim head coach during Payton's suspension for the 2012 season, according to several league sources. I thought they said Parcells doesn't want to do it..among other things it might restart the clock on his making the HOF.
Saw something about Parcells being the only coach to bring 4 different teams to the playoffs... NO could make it 5...
But that was as a front-office guy, not as coach. If he was strictly coaching for one year, I think he could maximize their talent on a short-term basis. The bigger issue is going to be which players are going to be suspended for Bountygate, and if they'll be suspended at the same time, or on a rolling basis.
The Saints should just promote from within. If an interim head coach steps in and leads the Saints to a good season Payton could be cut loose, making the Saints organization look a lot better in the process. If the Saints implode without Payton then he's always there for fallback. Parcells is really rusty and might have lost his football mojo anyways.
Hopefully Parcells distances himself from this because it only puts the wrong thoughts in the HOF voters minds.
I don't think Goodell should allow this, as it is a clear attempt to circumvent the penalty. But perfect for Parcells. He will be able to piggy back off of somebody elses success and if it fails, it won't be his fault
How is Parcells coaching a way to circumvent a penalty? Someone has to coach the team, whether that's a current assistant or an outsider, on a temporary basis. Unless you shut the team down completely and force them to forfeit all their games, the league has to provide for someone to be their coach. If you're bringing in an outsider for 8 games or more, why not the best available coach? I know other guys like Gruden and Cowher won't think twice about passing this up because of the temporary nature, but for a retired coach like Parcells, why not?
I had just assumed that the reason Goodell mandated that no person currently employed by the NFL could come coach the Saints was to make it so that the penalty would have as much effect as possible I see this as the Saints finding a loophole, but that could be a misguided viewpoint
