You have to wonder why there seems to be more "aw shits" than there are "Yay's" about this contract extension. Evidently, the fans aren't sold on Sanchez as the QB of the NYJ's. I would have thought the kid would have more fans by now but obviously he doesn't. His status in the lockerroom hopefully is better than his status among the fanbase or he's in for a really rough ride.

Sanchez had better bring his A-game over these next few seasons or the fans will boo him relentlessly and the media will most certainly scrutinize to the nth degree his every mistake. I'm not sure even the strongest personality could withstand that kind of pressure let alone a kid from SoCal nor will Rex saying "please don't boo the QB" matter much. I wonder just how much anything Rex says matters anymore.

It's been said winning cures everything and in this case, it had better happen PDQ. The clock is running on the SoCal kid.

    JMHO.

The clock's been running since the Jets drafted a rookie with 1 year of starting experience in college and said "Super Bowl or Bust!"

Seriously, Mark Sanchez will work out based not on his skills, which are evident at this point, but on the organization's savvy in putting a championship caliber team together.

The Jets aren't going to be able to ride Mark Sanchez to a Super Bowl. There are only two or three QB's in the sport that can be the mover like that and despite the Saints temporary insanity the odds are good that all of them are locked up until they get too old to be the man any more.

I have a feeling that's why Sparano is the OC and the GnP is back in vogue. They're not gonna have Sanchez do much more than QB 101 this season. The SoCal kid definetly is headed towards "game manager" instead of "game changer". In his case, that might not be so bad as it will keep the fans off his ass and the media quiet for the most part. Until they become so boring on offense that watching them becomes painful.

That's because most people don't understand the parameters of the deal and the immediate flexibility it gives us. The only thing is that if he bricks in 2012 then we're still on the hook in 2013 but that was the case already. Besides if we're starting a rookie or veteran re-tread we're in the same position anyway with 2013 being a 4-6 win type year.

Cman, I don't even think Mark spends his hours surfing the 'net and posting in forums such as this.

Frankly, as you pointed out, the only people he has to win over are his TEAMMATES, Period. He has the support of a good chunk but he must strive to win the support of the rest(whomever they are), although they still won't like him 'cause they're dicks by nature, but anyway....

please tell me that there are at least some jets fans on here who understand that the contract extension is a simply meaningless way of re-structuring to create additional cap room. Good move by Tanny - now we have some cash to pay FA.

^ Exactly. Mark is smart enough to see exactly what this is. He got around a 2.5 mill bump over the next two years, but we can drop him after that with no additional cost. He gets better or we move on. The three year "extension" includes no guarnteed money so its basicly the Jets option to run with it or not.

If I was bangin Kate Upton, I'd be busy too..

Don't underestimate the power of social media these days. Sanchez doesn't live in a bubble and inspite of what's said publically, he's knows what the perception is amongst the fanbase. If he tweets, facebooks, email or otherwise, he knows the fanbase doesn't have a helluva lot of confidence in #6.

That's his secondary challenge this season along with winning back the lockerroom but a challenge nevertheless. Nobody wants to be boo'd by 60K fans every homegame. I don't think Sanchez would survive the "Benitez Treatment."

    Drew Brees passes per game:

    2002 - 34.4 (good first year)
    2003 - 34.3 (bad second year)
    2004 - 27.9 (jackpot!)

    Mark Sanchez passes per game:

    2009 - 26.0 (shaky rookie year)
    2010 - 33.4 (better second year)
2011 - 36.4 (plateau at not good enough yet)

    Think about it.

    Ben Roethlisberger passes per game:

    2004 - 23.2 (good rookie year)
    2005 - 24.3 (good second year)
    2006 - 34.2 (shaky third year)

    Eli Manning passes per game:

    2004 - 23.3 (shaky rookie year)
    2005 - 36.6 (better second year)
2006 - 34.2 (plateau at not good enough yet)

Exactly. The people who are saying “aw shit” are either those who dont understand the contract and the benefits it gives us or those who have unrealistic expectation of him thus far.

This contract is a very good thing. Many dont understand that, and it’s frustrating listening to those who bash this extension without knowledge of it (90% of sports writers can fall into this category).

The thought of Mark Sanchez morphing into Drew Brees while still the QB of the NYJ's is a heart warming adventure. Perhaps a year of game managing will do the kid some good. It might take that long to get this team retooled.

I have no clue what he'll wind up doing. The point was that aside from a few QB's nobody gets through their 3rd year unscathed. The NFL just isn't that simple at the QB position and the people hitting the QB just keep getting bigger and faster while the people tracking down balls in the secondary get bigger and faster also.

Mark Sanchez main problem is that Peyton Manning and Tom Brady exist. These are the only guys I can think of who were just great right off the bat and significantly elevated their teams in the process.

Everybody else who has come to greatness or near greatness in the recent past was either carried by their team or got a goodly amount of time on the bench to sort things out.

I think Mark Sanchez has done an amazing job for the Jets. I can't imagine that very many people in the history of the NFL could have stepped into as chaotic an organization as he has with as little experience and survived the process.

I hope that he turns into the player I thought he was going to be along about the middle of January in 2010. Realistically I think the challenges he has faced and continues to face mitigate against that.

You can be a developmental QB in St. Louis and hit a bump in the road and nobody is calling for your head. Same thing in Tampa Bay. You hit a bump in the road in the NY media mess and the cannibals are just waiting for you to lose your balance so they can start feeding.

When Sanchez has to get the Jets downfield quickly he obviously has the tools to do that. That's all I'm saying.

Sanchez has only played 3 seasons and he's already lead more GWD and had more 4QC than Chad had in 6 seasons as Jets QB. People are screaming about Sanchez terrible year last year and he had 4 game-winning drives and 4 4th quarter comebacks in that mess.

    This

But there's a difference between the fans and the media

In the fans case, Capology is too complex for a lot of fans ( no disrespect intended... that's just the way it is)

In the media's case, it's just a rehash of the old bromide:
Why let the facts get in the way of a good story (see Serby today or Stephen A Smith)

And 95% of the GM wannabes on this board. They think Sanchez was overpaid and "rewarded."
