I wonder how the Patriots plan to resign Arrington, with a franchise tag on Welker. Branch and Ocho are gone to correct? The Patriots are going to need a strong draft or else they will have to hope Brady can carry them for a 3rd straight season.
Some free agents who did not get franchise tagged: Matt Flynn Peyton Hillis Michael Bush Brandon Lloyd Marques Colston Vincent Jackson Reggie Wayne Pierre Garcon Mario Manningham Laurent Robinson Robert Meachem Mike Wallace (tendered)
5 years, $36.25M; $19.5M guaranteed. That seems like a lot for Stevie Johnson (mind you with what we signed Holmes for we dont have too much room to point fingers)
The Pats are quite a ways below the cap. Ocho is still under contract, but will be cut soon if he doesn't agree to a restructuring. BTW, Welker will get a new contract. The only thing tagging Welker may do is take the Pats out of the Mike Wallace sweepstakes. I just can't imagine them giving Wallace a big contract before paying Welker. And I don't see them spending 18 mil on receivers. I think they'll make a run at Mario Williams
Where do you get this from? The Pats cap number is $102 mil right now. They have planty of room to do stuff.
Spencer is basically a younger version of Calvin Pace with some upside. I'm not surprised the Cowboys tagged him. He's flat value for them under the cap at that number and the tag gives them some negotiating room.
Colts re-sign Robert Mathis http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/7648263/indianapolis-colts-robert-mathis-agree-contract
Jaguars put franchise tag on Josh Scobee. That's a shame. I was hoping we'd have a chance at that beast. How often do teams tag kickers?
4 this year including Connor Barth, Phil Dawson, and Matt Prater. Weatherford also got one too, only the 3rd punter in the history of the franchise tag.
The Chiefs cut Will LB'er Demorrio Williams. Williams signed by the Chiefs as a FA in 2008. He posted career high 142 tackles in 2009. Williams has been a backup to Derrick Johnson the last 2 seasons.
I think its 4 kickers this year plus 1 punter thats the weird thing with the franchise tag - its gone from being the tool used to stop players like Brees leaving to being something teams use to keep a decent player from having to be replaced and provided its something like a kicker or a safety its a pretty cheap option.
I hope a UPS truck crashes into his house and breaks his neck into microscopic fragments. And then he retires.
