Wow, that's awesome. The only game I got to in 1982 was the pre-season finale at the Meadowlands vs Denver. A quirk in the schedule meant we didn't play Buffalo at all yet got all four games in vs the NFC Central (4-0) out of only nine games, and Miami twice. The other three were at New England, home Baltimore and at Kansas City.
re the 81 season, i did go to the playoff-clinching game against the packers. cold as hell up deep in the mezz and even though i didnt go to many games over the years i am sure this was a classic. shea was amazing. people were popping champagne. guys even stopped beating the crap out of each other (for a while) in a gesture of brotherhood. lol/ btw there is at least one good youtube out there of the WC game vs the Bills.
Trivia Question - In the 1981 Oilers game following an INT the Jets scored on the next play via a Flea Flicker. Who were the three players involved in the flea flicker for the TD?
I don't have a lot of memories from that particular game so this is a tough question for me. There are a few other RBs to choose but I'll take one more stab at it: Mike Augustyniak
Richard Todd handed off to Mike Augustyniak who then flipped the ball back to Todd. Todd rifled a pass 40 yards to a wide open Wesley Walker for the Touchdown!
My memory of that game was Gastineau and the rest of the DL sacking Kenny Stabler all day....I can still see the dust from the infield flying around after Stabler being slammed into it.
Yup. That day was the real emergence of Gastineau's sack dancing and the Sack Exchange in general. Gastineau wasn't contrived though, it was real emotion and I still think that's what turned our season around, that day. Him and the D-line throwing people around, kicking up dirt and going crazy. It got the crowd and the team going and they rode that the rest of the year behind that D-line. Throw in the flea-flicker TD off a turnover, that was just a great day.
Good call on giving Gastineau's enthusiasm some credit. He is often over looked because he was so hated. However, the real player that year was Klecko. He had one of the greatest seasons a Jet player ever had - 20 & 1/2 sacks. That number is unheard of even now. (Gastineau also had 20). He played the whole season on a terribly sprained ankle. It was so funny to see him run out for pre-game intros (they always intro'd the "d", BTW) hobbling on the ankle that was taped up like a balloon. Then he would just dominate opposing team's tackle. He was all about brute strength that year, and quickness off the ball ( Gastrineau was more a speed rusher) IIRC, Klecko was named NFL MVP by Dr "Z" in Sports Illustrated
The Jets had LT #1 on their board and Freeman #2. GR was #3 or even lower. My friend was in the Jets scouting dept. back then.
Yes, they sacked him 9 times....they Jets had gotten off to a horrible 0-3 start. They lost 31-0 to Buffalo after Joe Walton's offense had showed promise in the preseason. Then they blew a game to Cincy at Shea late. Then they gave up like 340 yards rushing at Pittsburgh (yeah, 340....not a typo) and got crushed. Then they beat Houston.....tied Miami (chicken crap game calls by Walt).....got back to .500.....beat Baltimore in Costas 1st game ever for NBC (with Trumpy)......beat Miami a few weeks later to get to 7-4-1....finished 10-5-1 by sacking Lynn Dickey 8 times in the final game to get both the Jets and Giants into the playoffs. I remember it like yesterday.
