Imo on one hand Hunter was not as totally awful as some here said. But he was the weakest starter on the team last year. That would be bad enough if he were young and up and coming. But he's not. I see no real prospect of improvement from him. He should be a backup at most.
He should be a cut. Your backups should be the young guys that you hope can move into a starting position if the opportunity presents, not the old guys who have proven they cannot.
It wouldn't shock me if Tannenbaum went with him and Ducasse again, hoping one of them could take a significant step forward. I don't support that, but now that we picked up Hunter's option, I'm not sure how many resources they want to put into offensive tackles. Hunter was our weakest OL last year. The easiest way to upgrade our OL is to upgrade Hunter. Maybe the Jets are looking to upgrade LG instead, which would make some sense given Slauson's long-time coach Callahan's departure and his offseason surgery. I don't think it's impossible to win with a guy like Hunter at RT. But if we want to be a smash-mouth run-first team, we need an upgrade. I haven't given up yet on Ducasse, but I'm not sure I like the odds on getting an above average starter all next year between him and Hunter.
If Tanny really wants Hunter to remain the starter, he had better make sure Sanchez's health insurance is paid up and comprehensive.
The thing about keeping Hunter is that it's going to produce a situation just like last season. By week 2 the Jets are already going to know that they have a real problem on that side of the line but they're going to be unable to do anything about it because there are no acceptable RT's walking around on the street by the end of training camp. The problem in 2011 was that the Jets had no better option than Hunter and by the time that became clear they had no realistic way to fix the issue. By about week 4 the Jet's Super Bowl chances had gone down the tubes because their pass protection wasn't good and their running game wasn't going to be a lot better. If the Jets go into 2012 with Hunter and Ducasse as the options at RT again and neither of them can do the job any better than it was done last season they're going to be unable to fix the problem, again.
The half glass full approach is theyll probably be better in a simpler man blocking scheme. Half empty says Hunter and Ducasse suck balls. Hopefully they're better. I think Slauson will get better after playing with a torn bicep, rotator cuff and some other shit. The question is when does Moore start to decline.
His run blocking has already declined significantly... And IMO, looking at the glass half full approach would moreso go along the lines of Hunter sucks and is nothing more than a backup on the wrong side of 30. Looking at it half empty would go like Hunter is a hot pile of garbage that only deserves to step on the field only after the offense gets a TD to give an actual starting caliber RT a nice ass slap... Scratch that. He might end up fucking that up too.
It is funny. Many of the same guys that are complaining about Hunter having a bad season and wanting him gone are willing to give Sanchez a bye. He did hold the ball too long while trying to read defenses and sometimes contributed to his own problems with being sacked. This is still a team game isn't it?
we are getting Hunter back and Dennis Landolt caught REX's eye in camp last season. I agree with you about Slauson. As injured as he was he still pretty much held his own against tough competition. An Ol with a bad shoulder spells trouble. Yet the guy did Ok.
Yea but Mr. T also said Ducasse would compete here. The guy who posted the thread with all of Tanny's statements is correct. This guy never means what he says. He'd make a great diplomat.
I am still shocked that Hunter was signed to any type of contract ? Why on earth are we even having this conversation,,,,,,Hunter should not even be on our roster !
I wonder what he'd say about Darrelle Revis or Nick Mangold... I really wouldn't put much stock in the comments one way or the other. I'm sure if a cheap but more effective alternative falls from the sky, they'll replace Hunter. If not, Hunter is the starter.
I'm guessing if someone worthwhile can be picked up in the draft in the first 2 rounds who isn't a project, they'll go for him to be the starter. Otherwise, it's tough to see anyone on free agency that wouldn't command a decent chunk of change to get in that position. Give Hunter some OTAs and whatnot and then decide I think, unless there's something they really like in Free Agency with any money they'll have left. They have enough needs that letting Hunter go could have backfired if they couldn't get a better replacement because of the cost.
And the "No Shit" award goes to Mr T for the following: "The GM confirmed that right tackle Wayne Hunter will keep his starting job, but added: "We expect him to play better this year."
