Will was really close w/ Parcells, assuming he did that I wonder if he did it to take some heat off the Parcells rumors?
Yeah, he was an old Boston guy. Even then there were a bunch of talking heads all looking for a scoop so I don't doubt it. Like when Peter Vescey was always trying to stir up the Jordan to the Knicks crap which would have been sacrilege for both sides.
Assuming he reported that, I don't recall it. It doesn't mean it didn't happen but I am assuming it happened based on what you say.
Thanks for the link, the report says he contacted the Jets. It sounds like McDonough was trying to steer people away from the Parcells to the Jets talk which was already all over the place.
Same here. It sounds vaguely familiar and I'm remembering the Trump Tower connection, I thought that was the 80s and the Generals but it could have been either or both.
I know, right ? If I remember correctly the Jets made so many other mistakes that day (penalties, etc) I'm pretty sure they would have found a way to blow it anyway. One highlight Darrol Ray's first game 75 yd. fumble recovery for a TD.
That was Linhart. He lasted one more week, then Jacobs came in for the infamous Monday night game in Seattle, where incidentally Walt Michaels had a problem with not the kicker but the punter Chuck Ramsey. Remember the "I can spit farther than you can kick" line ? I looked back and Ramsey's 3 punts totalled 90 yds. How many of those NBC banners do you have then? That's classic.
He actually said "My farts travel further than your punts" reducing Ramsey to tears believe it or not.....
Linhart! Jesus. I recall him being decent on the Bert Jones Colts, but not when he got here. Banners? Two. The old red and blue NBC sports logo - the first using the funky "N" was cool to have on the ceiling of my Rutgers dorm room. The other one featured an outline "N" with the peacock graphic on top. We also left the garden with an MSG Banner one time, that was a nice one, and also a "Turner Sports" (yawn). One day at Shea we plotted to get a CBS banner, which was rare since they'd have to play an NFC team and as we got down to the correct row, the only other two guys around beat us to it, and claimed the prize ; ) Shame, because those yellow and blue CBS Sports banners were cool. One of the NBC Banners is in Mc Kinney TX at my brother's house. I think the other one is in my garage. Now I need to go look for it...
You're right, that was the correct quote. The 3 NY newspapers twisted it when Ramsey told them what Michaels said, and Michaels got pretty mad about that.
Linhardt always did that weird little semi-circle before he kicked off. I'm pretty sure Ramsey lasted here longer than Michaels.
They showed the home game against Oakland in '79? I'd love to get a hold of that one on DVD (or VHS or anything), that was the first NFL game I ever attended.
Either way it's just as likely to be available because all the games were televised back to the visiting team's market, they just weren't carried to the NY audience unless we sold out 72 hours before game time. I think by 1979 all the games were on TV, although for some reason I'm thinking Detroit might not have been. Either CBS fucked us yet again or I have the years mixed up. The other NFC home game was Minnesota on MNF, which was ABC. Our local paper was an afternoon paper back then, and on Fridays they always ran a football weekend preview. I can remember being disappointed almost every home game, coming home and seeing Friday afternoon's paper saying we were blacked out. Also, reading the previous page I see where I made a mistake. Dallas didn't win the Super Bowl following the 1978 season, they were defending champs, got back and lost to Pittsburgh.
1982 Unused Strike Tickets I mentioned these in an earlier post, and since this thread encompassed other sack exchange years and late Shea seasons, I figured this was the best place to post. I saved these unused tickets from the '82 strike for years - long enough to own my first scanner. I don't think I have the tickets anymore, but I found the file of the scan. Man, that Monday night game against Buffalo @ Shea, in the rematch of the bitter playoff loss sure would have been sweet! The Denver home game would have been nice too. Not too many Bronco appearances at Shea in those days. Pats home on Halloween! man, Shea would have been whacky that day. Can you believe FOUR October home games? Has that ever happened? Looking back, I may have been robbed of the best stretch of Jets home games, EVER. We were only away for one week in October. DAMN. Due to the 1981 success, there was a dramatic price increase - to $13.00 per game! Three years earlier they were $9.00 so Leon was "cashing in" Seems funny compared to what we're paying now. Hope you enjoy seeing these!
Thanks for posting them! I hope you still have those tickets as they may have some good value if you ever wanted to sell them on ebay.
