Okay if you want to call a guy who should be on an NFL practice squad who was picked in round 2 not a bust that's fair. Let me put it differently. Our scouting department HC and GM screwed up on this pick. You don't pick practice squad players at a position of need in round 2.

Slauson is slightly better than a practice squad player. He is a quality back up line man in this league forced to start because we didn't have a quality starter on the team and didn't go out and get one when we cut our starter.

I think we should be drafting more OL men in late rounds and developing them all the time. On day one if you pick a guard or a RT they need to be ready to play.

It seems to me we need to have a regular program of drafting OL not just when the line falls to crap.

  4. I don't agree with your assessment of Slauson, but I do agree with this statement.

Seems like come draft day OL is always the position they "wish they could've addressed but didn't".When they do take O-linemen late (Jacob Bender, Nate Gardner, Dave Yovanovits) they either take the wrong guy or give up on them too soon.

I think Ducasse was taken with all the best intentions. I believe he was pegged to replace either Slauson or Woody after his rookie year. The lockout really hurt him & thus far he has struggled mentally. With that said he shows immense physical promise. If the mental part comes around..we're looking at a pro bowl type Right tackle. You have to remember that if anyone knew the book on Vlad coming out it was Mike Tannenbaum. Tanny is a Umass alum and is very active in the football program.

I fully expect the OL to be addressed this off season given Spurano's background. It's time to get back to ground & pound.

I had the EXACT same surgery 4+ years ago with the same 3 things fixed. It is VERY painful but in 5-6 months he should be fine. I was able to throw again 5-6 months later but Slauson will have little time to regain full strength...

And the mental part is the hardest part to install in any player.

All right. If Jets didn't have that many glaring holes to fill, and had OL that could afford a few years of apprenticeship from Ducasse, maybe 2nd round pick on Ducasse can be justified. THAT IS NOT THE CASE.

    ===================================================

There are players that you just have to keep drafting year in and year out. Those are:

    1. OL
    2. LB
    3. WR
    4. DB

Round 4/5/6/7 are specifically for these project type players. Jets don't draft these with the picks. They give out these picks like candies.

Slauson is playing between the best center in the league and a top 5 LT. He is a well below average gaurd in this league. We should be killing people off the left side of our line.

Brick is not a top 5 LT in the NFL. He had a great season last year but he was very disappointing this season. He looked very average.

Brick is a great LT he looked average because he has a JAG playing on his inside that he has to help.

I think Slauson's solid 2010 in pass protect and the run game proves he's more than just a JAG. We'll have to let his 2012 season be the verdict.

I'm not a huge fan of Slauson, but the bolded part is factually incorrect.

Slauson was groomed to replace Kendall and was the reason they chose to let Kendall go when they did. Hunter was the player forced to start because Ducasse was a bust.

Faneca was cut a year after Slauson was drafted. He went down hill faster than we anticipated and they couldn't get a reasonable deal out of him. Slauson was forced into the roll. Hard to believe a 7th round pick with limited talent was picked to replace Faneca.

Slauson is average, Ducasse is simply terrible. With Hunter also taken into account, if you want to run the offense we are best suited for, we need an influx of talent on our offensive line.

Heh, I sometimes get the endless parade of aging white veteran left guards jumbled, by bad, I meant Faneca.

Faneca was cut a year after Slauson was drafted, and he said in an interview that night on NFLN that he thought he was cut because they were grooming someone to take over at LG. Slauson was a Callahan guy, and started in that spot after Faneca left. Who else would they have been grooming? The Jets had barely drafted Ducasse at that point. It obviously wasn't Rob Turner. They haven't treated him as anything but pure depth.

Slauson was picked because he knew Callahan and had more than a passing familiarity with the zone-blocking scheme the Jets used. Now that both Callahan and the zone-blocking scheme are toast so is Slauson. The surgeries are another factor but the main point is that Slauson is not a fit for what the Jets are going to be doing next season.

Putting aside injuries during the season, Slauson was clearly the worst starter on the team in 2010. WTF is it about LG on this team??? Right before Faneca was signed, it was also the worst position filled by Clarke and Bender, perhaps the worst roster situation on the Jets in the past ten years, perhaps even going back to the Kotite era.

Having said that, I did see some improvement from Slauson this past year, but meanwhile Moore is a year older, and despite improving later was not strong early.

The Jets unfortunately face lots of holes elsewhere, but offensive guard is a real short to medium term problem.

Could be but now that Callahan is gone maybe it's time for the GM to start putting together a team with a plan.
