Supposedly, they wanted O'Brien because they thought the type of ball he threw would be better suited for Shea Stadium Of course, they moved from Shea before O'Brien ever threw a pass as a Jet  It has been argued that Marino would not have fared better under Walton. I think even Joe Walton would've gotten"something" out of Dan Marino but the funny thing is, Marino's career was very much like the Jets of the 80s... undeniable talent, good results up to a point, but no Super Bowl, so what's the difference in the long run
well another year or 2 like this one u may be onto something.... but another year or 2 like 09/10 u wont be onto something.
This is a great point which is largely overlooked. Playing in New York, even if he duplicated what he did in Miami, he'd have been ripped in the media all the time for not winning a Super Bowl while the Giants were winning two with Parcells. In Miami you can be the man for 15 years without winning a title, in New York you can't. Even Patrick Ewing went mostly unappreciated for all his efforts over a decade and a half.
With all due respect, I disagree completely... Marino never had any real talent around him - give him Walker, Toon, McNeil, etc and the Jets would have been a lot better off than with O'Brien.
Marino had talent around him. He was drafted by a team fresh off a Super Bowl appearance with the #1 running game, had All-Pros on his offensive line, had Duper and Clayton early on and played most of his career for Don Shula, the all-time winningest coach in NFL history. O'Brien came into a good team too, but didn't have nearly the advantages Marino had. Marino was still the better QB but it's not like he had nothing to work with.
Not to mention he played in the sun in Miami and not the cold and wind which is tougher on the passing game. The Jets and New England mostly sucked throughout his career, but he could almost never win in Buffalo and really didn't fare too well against us. We didn't even play him in the cold too often at home, either, just that O'Brien always played well against Miami.
So you're all saying that Marino wouldn't have taken the Jets further than O'Brien did? Is that the gist of it?
O'Brien never won a playoff game for us, so it's very likely that Marino would have taken us further, because all he'd have had to do is win one. The point was raised that Marino never won a Super Bowl, even playing in a much more stable environment, for a Hall of Fame coach, in a climate conducive to his passing game. So it's hard to imagine he'd have done much better playing in the cold for Joe Walton and Bruce Coslet, behind an aging O line that got O'Brien killed. Maybe if we had him in the 1986 season we'd have won it all but that's pure speculation. We've seen with Vinny, Chad and now Sanchez that there is still no love for any Jet QB who doesn't win a Super Bowl no matter what else they do, so why would Marino have been any different?
There's this highlight of TM that I used to see on ESPN of him playing at State. He blocked this D. lineman all the way to the sideline and almost to the bench. Steroids work.
