My exact sentiments.. I can't get that picture out of my head of him running and him getting hit on the side of his helmet by the football. I always think of It's always in Sunny in Philadelphia in the Eagles episode with Dennis. But at the same time, he's the only consistent receiver left for Sanchez, the two are good friends and have good chemistry, even if Keller is oblivious at times and makes dumb mistakes. It's also sad he's one of our "best" (by best, I mean statistically) receivers..I think it'd be a mistake to let him go.
Bolded is your subjective speculation. Also, I was saying what the Jets WOULD take. If they are getting offers for a 4th then they should retain him.
On continuity... Despite the issues with Holmes, I assume he will be back. I also think Kerley was making great strides toward the end of the season. I'm actually pretty excited about his play. And if the Jets could get Braylon back, that would count as huge continuity. On the other hand I am thinking LT is gone, and he still was the favored option out of the backfield since Greene is just not very good as a receiver. In short, if Edwards comes back, I don't think continuity demands that Keller stay. His contract is a problem, and his lack of blocking ability was just too obvious this past season. He makes the Jet play calls too easy to defend whether he's in or out. Dropped passes, games he disappears. All that is outweighed by this continuity issue? I dont think so.
You make it seem like the only reason we'd keep Keller is because of continuity. The guy contributes, hell, he's our leading receiver on our team. He's just not a blocking TE, that's something that's been known since he was drafted. Holmes made way more costly mistakes this year than Keller has, in my opinion. I'm not saying he's not expendable, but I think it'd be better for the Jets to keep him.
I do not think that he should even be on the block since he currently is one of the Jets few offensive things that work. Just do not see other teams viewing him as being worth a 3rd. What would you give up to get him if you were another team's GM?
The old sports saying goes trade a player a year early rather than a year late. Keller is what he is but would be more effective in New Orleans where they put out a high octane aerial attack
In the perfect fit scenario? San Francisco, San Diego, Dallas, Carolina, Atlanta, Arizona? I think he would be worth at minimum a third to those teams. Remember, when the Jets moved up to take Keller they were reporting Belli wanted him. The potential is there but our system failed him IMO.
Its to bad. With a average or decent QB he could have been a heck of a receiving TE. But I agree its better to get value for him now than lose him for nothing but a compensatory pick the following year. if Sanchez returns next year it will very likely be his last here. Being unable to throw outside the numbers and teams taking away Sanchez's slant routes left Keller as one of his few remaining viable options. Without him I can only imagine how confused and horrible he will he get. Until Sanchez is benched next year we may just have to not pass the ball at all. Similar to how we beat the Colts in the playoffs in 2010. Maybe Cumberland and Baker can move into Keller's role. The CS appeared to be very high on Cumberland as a receiver before his injury.
omg... if Keller goes im going to flip out. he is the only player that he has thrown to he had for all 3 yrs he was on the jets.... if i am not mistaken
1. It is true that Keller's blocking leaves a lot of room to be desired. 2. That said, trading Keller is a mistake. I would be all for extending Keller. Of course he should improve his blocking first and foremost, but utilizing 2 TEs that can go downfield at any time is surely going to present huge match-up problem for defensive coordinators. Especially, in a pass-oriented league that is NFL, being able to impose your will is at premium. Two TEs that can go downfield but can block as well will surely allow Jets the maximum flexibility in terms of play selection, since it is a power set (12 personnel was a sure-run personnel a decade ago!) but the QB always has the luxury of spreading them wide as if he's calling from 10 set. 3. Look at Patriots for instance. Hernandez is a good TE too, but frankly, I would think that Keller is slightly better TE than Hernandez is. Hernandez is not the TE that Gronkowski is. Watch how Patriots utilize these TEs - Gronk takes the majority of snaps, with Hernandez chipping in when he can. When Gronkowski is buried with multiple coverage, that leaves Hernandez and Welker (and to some extent Branch) wide open. I would think that Fred Davis can handle the primary role in TE. 4. Obviously, Keller cannot handle the primary attention. Neither can Holmes. So Jets should either draft a stud TE or if possible, get Fred Davis. (And Braylon Edwards.)
Trade Keller for a good RT. Aren't we going to be running 65% of time now? Draft Trent Richardson. Cut Mulligan. As for Mark , better watch out for McElroy.
I don't think anyone would give up a good RT for Keller but if they would I'd jump on it. Not a bad thought.
Based on the amount of times Keller has been hit in the ear hole by the football, he was one who didn't always know when know Schotty called a pass play.
