You know the guy that did wonders working with Maybin? The guy we promoted to OLB coach? He's leaving the Jets to coach West Virginia's LBs according to Manish...

I've been told that former Jets intern coach Mike Smith is, indeed, going to coach linebackers at West Virginia. #nyj

Mike Smith will be doing more than simply working w/LBs @ West Virginia.I'm told he'll essentially have co-coordinator responsibilities #nfl

    There's still hope:

    BrianCoz Brian Costello
Source says Jets OLB coach Mike Smith to West Virginia not a done deal yet #nyj

    Nevermind:

    BrianCoz Brian Costello
Just talked to someone else that confirmed Mike Smith is West Virginia bound. If it's not done, it will be shortly. #nyj

FUCK. This guy did wonders with Maybin. Well this fucking blows...

I was hoping that he could coach up a rookie into a nice passrusher...

So he was promoted and then left like a week later. Sounds just like some other former coaches.

Sounds like coaches are jumping ship from this coaching staff.

I don't think this is it. If he really was offered co-coordinator duties, then it's probably a good look for him.

I don't know how it went and how much money was involved but, from the outside looking in, I would've relished the opportunity to work with Rex a couple of years...

So he left an NFL job to make a lateral move to college. Yep, nothing to see here folks. Everything is fine. All is well.

Is this the guy that is Welker's best friend (which would explain it) or was that some other intern that we promoted at the end of the season?

Yeah, it is so you have your answer.

"When Wes Welker and Mike Smith picked up a box of hairless rats from Walter’s World of Pets in Lubbock, Tex., nobody on the Texas Tech football team was safe. The wide receiver and linebacker were prideful pranksters, college roommates and best friends. Sometimes they joined forces by unleashing those rats on unsuspecting teammates in the running backs’ meeting room. Other times, they went rogue, like the day Smith filled up a bucket with fireworks and set them off right by Welker’s ear as he was napping upstairs."

He was buddies with Welker in college so he left the Jets to go do the same job at WVU? That's your reasoning? Seriously?

It is certainly as good as anything you could come up with explaining why he would leave the NFL to take the same job at West Virginia, really? He doesn't even have ties to WV.

It has nothing to do with Welker. Smith played at Texas Tech when Holgorsen coached there. Smith and Holgorsen are friends so that is your Smith and WVU connection.
