We get a safety and LB our defense will be superb. Having a player as bad as Eric Smith could easily make any good defense look really, really bad. Look at the Steelers, 1 weak player cost em the entire game in Denver and made their defense look horrible.
While I agree in general that people get offended too easily, imo this particular comment was offensive because it shows little respect to a player who gave his life for all of us. He shouldn't be the punch line of a joke. That's classless, crass and lowlife.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but this thread is flat out wrong. This is a solid defense with a ton of great players still in their prime. The D really only has a few holes..the problem was that the holes were acute, and when combined, was a recipe for disaster. There simply needs to be an upgrade of speed and athleticism in the middle of the back 7 and a 3 down pass rusher is needed. Other than that Revis, Harris, and Cromartie(YES CROMARTIE) are elite level players still in their prime. Wilson continues to get better and this D-line is gonna be SPECIAL, perhaps as early as next season. Let's allow rex to pick up a few toys in free agency, and combine that w/ what we have at corner, what we're about to have up front combined with Rex's scheme...this D is gonna be BETTER than fine.
The offense will improve next season, but the defense will probably slip a little bit. Mike Pettine will be next year's scapegoat and Rex will throw him under the bus next January. Meanwhile, the Cowboys will realize that Rob Ryan is a complete fraud and jettison him, setting up the inevitable reunion of the Ryan boys here in East Rutherford. That will be a complete disaster, both from a performance and a public relations stand point, and Woody will put an end to the Ryan era after the 2013 season.
Cromartie is a really good corner. Glad someone else in this fan base sees it. Our top 3 corners are awesome and should stay put.
I laugh, you can always tell when some one outside of the Jets fanbase has no clue about our defense, you might hear things such as "Cromartie is a scrub" "Bart Scott sucks" "Clavin Pace sucks" or "Your safties are horrible" No, are safties are not horrible, Jim Leonhard has all the intangibles and yes ability, Smith is just overmatched and plays like an undersized LB.
No doubt...he is SPECIAL in man coverage. Fans get caught up in him allowing completions and his below average tackling. But when you play next to Revis you are going to allow SOME completions, and in terms of the tackling..you sacrifice a little of that physique for his freakish speed/athleticism. He's truly the only real ATHLETE the team has on D. Make no mistake...he's a top 10 corner in this league...without question.
Totally disagree. The defense was top 5 despite not be able to set an edge or cover a tight end. The are still a lot of solid starters on that side of the ball to go with revis and Harris. We bring pouha back and we are one or two players from being dominant again.
I love the OP line that there is not really one place we couldn't upgrade besides Revis/Harris. NO SHIT - please tell me what team has the best player in the league at all 11 positions on the field because unless they fit that description they could "upgrade" . I sure hope Wilkerson/Ellis do not become Gastinenau/Klecko because they were primarily DE's in a 4-3 a totally different role and responsibility (I know Klecko was a PB at DT, NT(Colts) but for the Jets he was at his best on the End. We have the best CB duo in the league and some real underated 3-4 Dlineman in the rooks, Pouha and Devito. We also have some talented youn LB's to go with Harris. Do we need a pass rushing OLB and a Safety absolutely but this team is far from a trainwreck on the defensive side of the ball.
I'm hoping we draft somebody like Mercilus...a good pass rusher can make an instant impact as a rookie
Harris is replaceable. He struggles in coverage. He's no Patrick Willis. Nobody on this D should be viewed as untouchable except maybe Revis. If we could get a Herschel Walker type deal for Revis, fine, but that's not happening unless you can get Tom Dmitroff (falcons) to bite.
Pat Tillman comment was a joke. Good or bad depending on your senses of humor. And I'm not saying we WERE bad. I'm saying the writing on the wall is that we're going to be bad if we don't address the decline before it shows on the field. Serious upgrades at ILB and in the backfield for starters, OLB and interior lineman for seconds. We have no depth. That doesn't frighten anyone?
I'm actually a sunshiner, not a darksider. But I'm also a realist. The plan was to win by now and it backfired and now we're hoping to put band-aids on things before they spiral. Against the pass they've been dependent on great DB play alone, considering they have no pass rush. Against the run? THAT lost at least 2 games alone this season. The elite defenses are well balanced, and built with interchangeable parts. We're one-sided, and when a starter goes down the entire thing comes down like a house of cards.
Bart Scott is a big black hole on the defense. Non existent. He doesn't even get close to the ball at the end of plays much less during plays. He's frustrated with the sad reality that he's hit the wall and taking it out on a photog's camera. To argue that he's NOT finished is ridiculous. By now he should've been rewarded with that contract for the win that came before now. It didn't come. He's being rewarded anyway. Release him and fill the void immediately.
So if other people jump off a cliff, are you going to? Just because other people do stuff doesn't make it right.
