It seems like this entire team and the good players we've had and still have was built by Eric Mangini he built the core of this team during his 3 years as head coach he has a great eye for talent But the players never had his back..When is Rex Ryan gonna make his smart draft choices and his good free agent signings he hasn't done much of that going into his 4th year as head coach. We should give Mangini some kind of position with the team he has a good eye for talent. The talent Rex brought in compared to what Mangini did dont even compare ....Here take a look....

    Mangini men, to an extent

    OFFENSE

    • Drafted under Mangini: Left tackle D’Brickashaw Ferguson, Round 1, 2006; center Nick Mangold, Round 1, 2006.Dustin Keller round 1 2008.Drafted Brad Smith

    • Acquired under Mangini: Left guard Alan Faneca, free agent, 2008; right tackle Damien Woody, free agent, 2008; running back Thomas Jones, trade with Bears, 2007; fullback Tony Richardson, free agent, 2008

    • There before Mangini: Wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery, drafted in 2004; right guard Brandon Moore, undrafted free agent in 2003.WR Brad Smith

    • Also, Mangini drove the trade that sent the Browns’ No. 5 overall draft pick to the Jets, who spent it on quarterback Mark Sanchez. Mangini later traded wide receiver Braylon Edwards to the Jets on Oct. 6.

    DEFENSE

    • Drafted under Mangini: CB Darrelle Revis, Round 1, 2007.Dwight Lowery drafted 4th round 2008,linebacker David Harris, drafted round 2 in 2007

    • There before Mangini: Linebacker Bryan Thomas, Round 1 pick in 2002; nose tackle Sione Pouha, Round 3 draft pick in 2005; safety Kerry Rhodes, Round 4 draft pick in 2005.DE Shaun Ellis

NOTE: Jets defensive starters who were acquired after Mangini left include tackle Marques Douglas, linebacker Bart Scott, cornerback Lito Sheppard and safety Jim Leonhard,Antonino Cromartie.

Mangini's influence on these picks was a lot less than you think and so is Rex's. Tannenbaum and the scouting department with people such as Joey Clinkscales are way more responsible for the draft picks and free agents that the Jets bring in.

Calvin Pace was a first round pick of the cardinals and the Jets signed him a free agent, and David Harris was a 2nd round pick and they traded up to get him.

good post, another one for the like button. Mangini is my guy. Loved him, he got a raw deal here, and the team had discipline and character as well, except for the Bret Favre nonsense, I can blame Tanny for that, but then, a lot of fans were screaming for Favre, just like they are screaming for Manning now, we love a quick fix.

what stand outs has Rex Ryan drafted??Mangini built all of the good players we have on this team.Who is Rexs big draft guy??Shonn Greene?Who should be a num 2 back?who else??Underachiever Joe McKnight??Good Speical teams guy but when are we gonna see more???Kyle Wilson has gotten better and is a good num 3 corner. Kerely really stood out in the Dolphins game and could be a good number 4 WR i still dont see him as a starter though except on Special Teams.Wilkerson had a pretty decent year but these guys are not the future of this team

I think history will be a little kinder to the Mangina era - I think he played an integral part in getting us to where we are now.

I'll be fucked if I'm choosing him over Rex as HC tho'

    I just checked

Mike Tannenbaum made every one of those picks in 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009-present too.

Mangini did have one significant positive role in the Jets drafting process, though... In 2009 he allowed the Jets to draft a franchise quarterback in exchange for a second round center and the immortal Abram Elam, Kenyon Coleman and Brett Ratliff

Thank you Eric Mangini --- the guru who built the Jets

Assuming by "coach" you mean "head coach," we may be saying the same about Ryan in a few years. So far, I'm not sure he's shown great, or even above average, head coaching skill. His willful ignorance of large parts of the team, losing the locker room and either real or feigned lack of knowledge about specific in-game issues (like why Sanchez threw 60 times in a game or why Holmes was removed from a game) are all pretty large warning signs about his ability to lead and create a vision or blueprint for franchise success.

He's obviously a fine defensive mind, but a lot of people in the NFL are quite smart about their specialty and yet not capable of being the top of pyramid for on-field football operations.

so, so true, I guess this thread is about to become another bash Rex Ryan thread... YAAAY!! Let me start. How come no one has ever asked the question, how come the Ravens didn't hire him to be there head coach? I mean, they knew him so well!

If you're going to give Mangini the credit for all of these drafts (which is probably unwarranted anyway) then he also needs to take the blame for missing on the #6 overall pick in the draft (Vernon Gholston).

In addition, he led the Jets to the playoffs only once (something Rex has done twice in the same amount of years) and was eliminated in the first round. Rex has also never led the Jets to a 4-12 season with "Mangini Men" either.

The Jets have been handicapped by the final four rule in both of the last two seasons which has hindered their ability to acquire free agents so to compare his acquisitions to Rex Ryan's is somewhat unfair, not to mention that Mangini typically picked at higher spots in the draft than compared to Ryan.

Is it just an oversight taht your leaving off Gholston? That pick was on Mangini's watch and was by far the biggest waste of assets of any of the things you discussed.

You think the HC has no say in the draft picks? The team drafts picks according to the type of player the HC wants for his roster. Tannenbaum most likely had less input than the HC.

What's the point of having highly paid scouts and a personnel department if they can be overruled by the coach watching a video in February and saying "I want that guy"?
