This was in Adam Schefters 10 spot. I thought it was relevant because it seems like one more mediocre season and Rex will be run out of town and I think that would be a mistake unless things really get out of hand next season.

Lets not forget what Rex has done for the defense and the mindset of this organization. It's the first time in my lifetime that we have had a top defense 3 straight years and that we go into every season expecting to be in the playoffs.

I expect Rex to get this fixed and the Jets to be playing games in the postseason next year again. However if this team misses out again but Rex shows he is learning and not making the same mistakes over and over don't we owe the guy a few more years?

No one wants to be part of an organization that hires new coaches every three years. It makes it nearly impossible for the team to succeed. It puts pressure on the coach and GM not to do whats best for the team in the long run, it doesn't allow them to let their players develop, and it doesn't even give them enough time to mold the roster into what they envision it to be. In a league where instability is rampant the top coaching talent and top players seek out organizations with stability (and money of course). I hope the jets show a little patience this time around and look at the big picture before making any rash decisions.

The honeymoon is indeed over for Rex in New York. That's not to say he's being run out of town on a rail because of the 8-8 debacle we just witnessed. What Rex does have to do is show improvement in 2012 not only on the field, but off the field as well. He's gonna have to show that he's more than the Head Defensive Coordinator and Rex really can't afford another "I didn't know" moment when it comes to critical personnel moves during games. Rex is gonna have to control himself as well and grow into the job instead of acting like its still his first year as HC of the NYJ's.

We can only hope Rex learned something this season about people, about the NY Media, and about himself. He hasn't been around long enough to have too many more 2011 kind of seasons or he will be getting the fisheye. There's a reason why Rex wasn't hired as a Hc for so long and in 2011, it kinda showed. He really can't afford to do it again..

Good article. Finally some reasonable insight from a media type.

Rex gets a pass this season, and next. He's rebuilding and a handful of draft picks and some FA changes is not going to make this team an SB contender. MS needs to grow and we need a big time safety to get anywhere. It will be 2 years minimum before we are back at the AFCCG.

I don't think Ryan will lose his job over one more bad season, but certainly I would hope Tannenbaum and everybody else associated with the organization would. Two more bad seasons and he would be gone though.

Oh, and Schefter is a complete asshole..every team he mentions that is allowed to stay the course has had continued success..if they had lost as much as everybody else in the league then they would also have fired their coaches three times over.

Sean Payton went to the NFC Championship in year one and missed the playoffs then next two years...I say give Rex some leash to work with.

I would only be concerned if we hear the same things regarding team chemistry next year if we miss the playoffs.

We just didn't have the talent this year

Completely untrue. We just lacked talent at the QB slot and safety.

Please. It's only stability if meets the basic minimum for competency. In Rex's case this past season, it's suddenly been revealed to perhaps be borderline. Because of the success of his first two seasons, he deserves some slack, and perhaps more than another year IF he shows signs of changing his philosophy and approach in 2012 and addresses his shortcomings in a significant fashion.

In Schottenheimer's case, it's been readily apparent for anyone knowledgeable who cares to see it that he isn't competent to function as an OC in the NFL. He's had plenty of opportunities to learn and hasn't. The Jets' offense has been the very model of inconsistency and mediocrity during Schottenheimer's reign of error. Rex even tried to help him by bringing in Moore this season. The red zone offense (directly as a result of Moore) improved dramatically, but nothing else did. In fact, the offense took a step backwards this season. To be fair, Schottenheimer isn't solely to blame for that. Rex must get some of the blame, and Tanny must get a large portion.

Tanny also deserves to be put on notice. He has stripped the team of it's leadership and destroyed its chemistry. He has left major holes on the roster with his constant trading up. He made serious error last season in pursuing Nnamdi, for not having insurance at RT in case Hunter couldn't handle the starting spot, for not getting a veteran replacement for Turner after he went on IR, for not addressing the OLB and S spots either in FA or the draft, for his almost constant failure to find any significant talent in the lower rounds, for some of the contracts he has negotiated recently that tie the Jets' hands (Pace & Scott), for drafting a project OL in the second round, and but for a stroke of luck, would reportedly have taken him in the first round. He also deserves condemnation for generally not knowing beans about talent evaluation or how to put a roster together and for his continued support of Schottenheimer.

The ostrich head in the sand approach doesn't work. Keep drinking the Kool Aid. I'll believe that things are better when I see it happen. At this point, I have almost zero faith or confidence in Woody, Tanny or Rex to make the necessary changes this offseason to fix the problems with the team.

I'm sorry, Adam Schefter, you have rocks in your head. LONG gone are the days when a guy could mortgage his car dealership and buy an NFL franchise. These are now billion dollar businesses. That fat television contract gets split 32 ways, sure; but, if your team sucks ass and you have issues keeping your home fans interested and selling out your home venue, you lose out on the UNSHARED revenue that you get to enjoy as the fruits of your own local marketing. Jerry Jones built a billion dollar football palace. If you think he can afford to miss the playoffs six times in a row with the next Tom Landry, you just don't understand the bid'ness werld.

This was a stupid article. In 2011, there are two truisms in the NFL, and some teams still don't get it, and probably never will. First, you can't afford to let a crappy coach drop a deuce on your franchise for more than three years. Second, investing in the wrong quarterback can keep your franchise mediocre for a goddamn decade.

For the Jets part, I think that second point is still up in the air for another year.

ETA: I should say that I like Adam Schefter a lot. He should just stick to reporting and leave the opinions to others.

I don't disagree with, Schefter. Your theory would have teams like the Lions and Browns out of the NFL by now. This is the first playoff appearance for the Lions since like 98.

He is not wrong in his reporting/opinion. You look at those teams that are consistently dominating this league, they have stability. That is a fact. Without that stability you are going no where fast.

From a business stand-point. The teams are still going to make their money, win or lose. That is the nature of this league, it is that big. You are not going to make nearly as much as you would when you are a winning team, but still..

Teams can afford to wait for success. If you don't, you are going to consistently be losing money in the long haul because the team will never be significant.

When a coach like Rex Ryan comes around, you give him time to learn the ropes. You allow him to come into his own. From a football stand-point Rex Ryan has already changed the culture and he has made our defense top notch. Those things alone are miles ahead to what we have been used to for so many years.

When you get results like that out of a coach like Rex Ryan, you give it time because if that much good has already been established with him being the HC, the sky is the limit for our future. You don't give up on that.

He's 1 of the 10 youngest coaches in the league, I believe.

All of the teams he mentioned had lots of success early in their respective coach's careers, which is the main reason they got to stay around AKA stability. I suspect the success causes the stability, not the other way around.

If you think Shahid Khan is going to sit around for six years waiting for his next coach to make the playoffs, I'd say you're crazed. I imagine he would as well. The Ford family, on the other hand. who probably paid a measly few million for the Lions, hardly has the same concerns as Khan. Nor was it an accident that Woody Johnson gave up on Eric Mangini when he did. Wealthy though he is, you just can't pay what he did for the team, pay what he did to build a stadium, and then sit around and wait for a coach to catch a spark.

Rex is a clown and his "I'm not gonna change" attitude is not to be admired. He MUST change and mature as a HC if he expects his players to conduct themselves differently.
If he stays the same he'll be back to being a coordinator.
