I've never started a thread here, since I normally only post when the Pats are part of the topic in some way, or its a general football conversation. However in this time of turmoil for the Jets, I've asked a question in a couple of previoius threads that hasn't seemed to have gotten answered. So I'll ask it directily. Who is in charge of the Jets football operations. Is it Tanny? Rex? or some unseen man behind the curtain? Does Rex report to Tanny? Who makes the final personnel decisions? Who does Tanny report to? Rex? Woody? I know how it works in Foxboro. I know how it works in just about every other consistently good franchize in the league. In all the good franchizes it may be run differently, but there is always a clear deliniation of authority, with every body supposedly on the same page. However with the Jets you have to wonder if anyone is reading the same book. I know Rex is the face of the franchize, but is he "in charge". Its going to be a very interesting off season in NJ. Lots of important decisions to make. Just curious to know who will ultimately make them. Thanks
My impression has been that, the personnel decision belongs to Tannenbaum, and Rex Ryan, after all the bravado and all, is but responsible for the daily operation of the team. I am pretty sure Woody Johnson has some input here and there, but I don't know up to what extent that influences the decision. I have been suspecting this for a while, since when Derrick Mason disaster hit the franchise past season, obviously Rex wasn't too pleased about it but I don't think it was Rex who shipped Mason out. He must have substantial input in that decision, but at the end of the day, that is not what a head coach is responsible for. (Or that's how it is in my book anyway.)
Thanks for the reasonable response. I find it hard to believe that Tanny, without any personnel experience at all, has ANY say in who or who doesn't come on the team in either FA or the draft. On the Pats the Director of Player personnel is Rick Casserio. He was a teammate of Josh McDaniels, who scouted, broke down film, and coached on the field before he got into his position. They also have Floyd Reece (former Titan GM) to works in personnel. These are the guys who set up the board and scout FA's BB, of course has the final say. They did a great job with grabbing Waters, Carter, and Anderson......with Haynesworth and Ocho.....not so much I can't believe Tanny knows anything about evaluating talent? Is their a "Rick Casserio" or "Floyd Reece" in the Jets organization, and does Rex get final say, or in an effort to keep everyone on the "same level", does he bring everyone in to vote on it.
Basically no, Tanny is an accountant/cap specialist but he makes the final decision on most players moves. I think Rex gets one draft pick a year and the others are done by Tanny. I'm sure Rex has input as they certainly wouldn't draft a 4-3 lineman to play in Rex's defense.
I think it works like this: Tannenbaum gives Rex a spreadsheet of players the team can afford and he can choose from. Rex picks a certain amount an Tanny gets the contracts done.
Football operations are definitely a collaboration of Rex, Tanny, scouting people. Tanny focuses on the contracts.
Ken Any particular reason mentioning NJ when talking about Jets? This is not the first time I am seeing it. This team's name is New York Jets. If you think you are insulting the team by calling them NJ Jets please go fuck yourself. Sorry This is as civil as I can get. Now go fuck yourself
I don't think Rex has that much say, beyond saying 'yes' every time Tannenbaum asks him 'can you coach this guy'.
The man has been in NFL front offices/personnel dept. for well over 10 years. He was basically the apprentice of Bill Parcells. He may not have started with much knowledge in player evaluation...but I guarantee he's learned more about it than you & I combined will ever know. Additionally, he's surrounded with some pretty good talent evaluators in Bradway,Cohen and Clinckscale(Hand selected by Parcells).
There is a guy named Terry Bradway, and Joey Clinkscale. Clinkscale handles the college talent, while Bradway is responsible for the talent up there in NFL (that's my understanding.) Bradway as a GM was an absolute disaster - Dslob draft comes to mind - but as a scout he is less terrible (or that's what I've been hearing of him lately.)
Bradway has a very good reputation league wide. He was too much of a scout for the GM role, but as a personnel guy he's considered top notch.

I think we blew our load on Nnamdi. (Braylon and Brad didnt deserve the money they wanted). We lost key back up players. A terrible offseason by Tanny and the entire staff. Last i heard we were 8 million under the cap. With back up issues just about everywhere. QB, WR, RT crap at other spots.
