If Rex is wearing thin after a miserable loss like today, I get that. Personally, I don't think he was as outgoing this year as hes been in past seasons. But the bottom line is that we go another season without a VLT Rex has to learn from his mistakes, but I think we stay the course w/him and I hope he doesn't change his basic philosophy.
Rex tried to make everyone believe that he could do big things with mediocre players. That is proving to be untrue. And the idea that his braggadocio takes pressure off his players is bullshit too - he adds pressure by writing checks his team obviously can't cash. His blind loyalty to the players isn't getting it done. It's time to put the big mouth act to bed and get down to some coaching.
Don't get me wrong I like Rex Ryan, but at some point he has to STFU...lay low and make a committment to building it into a championship team. He's gotten the Jets to being a winning team, but now he has to take it to another level. I think this off-season will be the most one in a long time. I think the ownership has to be more aggressive in signing quality free agents.
He even had the angle on Cruz too yet he still couldnt catch him. The defense just needs some more speed at safety and linebacker. They are just old and dirt slow...
I agree that Tannenbaum deserves to take heat. The "misses" and wasted picks in the draft have been more numerous and frequent than the good picks. A team like the steelers is always in contention year after year because they don't make mistakes in the draft, particularly in the early rounds. Management drank the kool-aid after the Doug brien miss, reaching for Nugent in the 2nd. This team always thinks it's better than it really is. Rex must have convinced Tannenbaum that we don't need a pass rusher, that we can make up for a lack of talent with schemes. But when you don't have a pass rusher capable of consistently getting to the QB it puts enormous pressure on the LBs and secondary. Rex is a good defensive coach. Frankly, there isn't enough talent on either side of the ball.
Rex & FO were loyal (or had no choice but to retain) to some players, Smith & Leonard, for example, who are too slow and got exposed in the third year of a system that worked quite well for two years. Defense needs a Safety and an OLB, and speed must be significantly upgraded on D. Do that and no one will be telling REX to STFU
Finally...SOMEONE is making sense...!!!! I've been calling for Tannenbaum's head all year. He may be a great cap guy, but as a judge of talent, he sucks!!!
Nice try buddy...but I beat you to it. I was in the shut the fuck mood awhile ago buddy boy....just kidding. When I saw the thread...I thought someone bumped mine: http://forums.theganggreen.com/showthread.php?t=68084
Rex has brought about a culture change in this organization by presenting an unwavering appearance of self-confidence. What kind of a message does it send to the team, to other players, to the media, if he suddenly turns into a shrinking violet when adversity hits? Of course, it makes sense to tone it down a bit when the team stinks, but I think it would be a terrible mistake for him to make an abrupt, drastic change in his approach.
It worked with the Mangini core. Many of the key players from that core left after the 2009 or 2010 seasons and most likely the Jets will not make the playoffs this year. The GM has stayed the same. It looks like Ryan's personnel evaluation is not good. Surely the scouts and GM take a hit but Ryan is also putting his two cents in on guys like Brodney Pool, Derrick Mason, Plaxico Burress, Bart Scott, Nick Folk and others. In 2012, it will be time for Rex Ryan to make the playoffs with a team that is truly his team. 2012 will tell us more about Ryan than 2009-11 combined.
pretty much. Right now it hasnt worked, not because of Rex talking or not but because we simply dont have the players to own teams.
Interesting take on the situation. Rex certainly does have a lot on the line in 2012 not the least of which is credibility a lot of which he lost in '11. Yeah, his twin AFCCG appearances has given him a pass but that doesn't last forever. His personnel additions hasn't worked out but how much of that is Rex and how much of that is Tanny. In the end, all we got to show for 2011 is yet another season w/o a VLT. To make matters worse, we're most likely staying home at 8/8 or even 9/7 should we luck up and win in Miami. Rex really can't afford too many more seasons like this one or he'll find himself on the perverbial hotseat. Not just from the TriState Media, but from Woody Johnson.
this post horrifies me. to think we just dont have guys who are good talent evaluators is scary. i definitely think we have gone for big names and past performance rather than quality players in getting quite a few guys. the wr position really screams this. however the core of the team has certainly gotten weaker. i think there is a certain bit of were almost there we just need x or y guy to get over the hump. meanwhile we are sending meat and potato guys to the scrap heap....
I agree. Rex Ryan always says "The way we won was ugly, but i'll take it." Thats the problem, he's been taking it, but the Jet fans been taking it as well. Stop overhyping and fix your team. Oh and remember when Ryan said "Ground and Pound is back?" HA!!!!!!!
disagree completely.....we have gone into a talent free fall this year.....the combo letting go 1. edwards / cotch /lowry/feely 2. terrible acquisitions...burress/tomlinson/mason/cromartie 3. TERRIBLE drafts ( ie ducasse/ellis/ giving draft picks away to walk away with 3 draft picks for average players- green/sanchez) were are 2-3 SOLID drafts away from possibly being very good
Rex is high risk, high reward He and Jets talked 100x more last year vs Patriots (remember Cromartie saying Brady is an a-hole?) No threads or topics like this last year I think Rex has to revise his act a little and not get goaded into overstatements by the press. Hopefully next year he won't predict an SB victory However, there is nothing wrong with a confidant philosophy Jets have to get the horses and revise CS (bye bye Schotty) Also, Jets need a Rex-type personna on the field. Scott was that man for 2009 and spurts of 2010, but he knows he what he has left in the tank now. If the Jets can get that type of guy to play big on the field, that will help.
