If i see us go to a shotgun 5 receiver set inside the 10 yard line again im going to stab myself in the eyes with a fork. It just doesnt make any sense:

    1) are protection almost always breaks down instantly from that set
    2) it is usually very unsuccessful
    3) it plays to sanchez weaker points(short quick accuracy)
    4) 0 threat of the run, allowing the D to clamp down in an already short space

makes even less sense these past 2 weeks, where we have had some success running.

    agreed... so unnecessary...

the worst part is he calls this on 1st and 2nd downs a lot of the time.

totally takes away the great effect a running game has on the minds of the defense.

if u really wanna pass thats OK but try to keep the defense guessing, i mean cmon. this is Coordinating 101 here.

    I disagree.

I think going five wide is a good matchup for us near the goalline, as it forces the D to widen and puts our receivers on 1-on-1 matchups. Also, defenses tend to play a lot of man coverage near the goalline, so it makes for an easy pre-snap read, which always favors a young QB, plus almost each one of our receivers can create seperation on a 1-on-1 situation.

The traditional threat of the run may dissappear as you say, but if the defense tries to cheat and play all pass, Sanchez can and has through his career been able to scramble for a score, whether it has been a dialed up QB draw or a broken play.

We are 1st in the league in TD percentage inside the 20 and the 5 wide formation is a big part of it.

Yes. Schotty tends to go I formation 2 WR on first down everywhere else on the field. Drives me insane.

Yup, same here. No wonder the WR's can't get open as the D can key on only the 3 viable options as Greene and Conner/Mulligan aren't that threatening pass catchers.

I agree that I do not like this formation. I'd rather keep the back in the back field for the threat of the run or to pick up a rusher if the call is a pass.

Thie formation does help for a QB draw (like they did against Miami) or a quick inside slant. Both are helped by pulling a linebacker out wide to cover the halfback leaving, a hole in the middle of the field. It let's Sanchez evaluate the defensive formation better. I'm sure they have a second option if the safety comes down to cover the spot vacated by the LB.

That said I think they have a better chance of isolating Plax 1-1 in the corner or Keller in the front of the end zone. The o-line has improved tremendously since the first half of the year, but they can always use the blocking help to give Sanchez and extra second or two in these situations. It is hard to cover guys in this situation for long. Defensive backs tend to get turned around near the goal line and receivers can get lost in the back of the endzone if enough time is given

The spread formation with 5 wide is a 50/50 deal between pass and QB draw up the middle. If the MLB follows the slot receiver in motion then look for Sanchez to run it on a delayed draw.

Sanchez has a QBR of 99.3 when the Jets are in 4+ WR formations.

Just where the hell were you years ago, when Schottenheimer would routinely dial up shotgun with 4 wide on 3rd down at 2 yard line?

I disagree, although I agree with all your points, our Redzone offense is #1 in the NFL CBS said yesterday. We score TDs 65% of the time (it definately went up after yesterday).

Last year we were #30. Lets not try to fix something thats not broken

Yeah I don't mind it much. If we had some great Oline that could blow other teams off the ball then id be pissed but that's not the case.

It's good to be leading the league in something. If 5 wide gives us this type of percentage then I'm all for it! You can't argue with the percentages.

I wouldn't mind you stabbing yourself in the eye with a fork. In fact I encourage it and recommend you use a box cutter instead

Any time I see an open back field I cringe... But when we are inside our own 10, I just want to punch a whole in my tv

Add to these facts the our QB, while not of Vick type speed, is mobile enough to have scored twice on runs out of an empty backfeild on very short and goal to go situations this season. This is actually one of the few instances where I think Shotty puts people in a position to succeed base on thier talents.
