EXACTLY! Shonn was much more effective in years past, specifically if you look at the first 10 games of last year where everyone was a little shocked that LT was our premiere back rather than Greene. But we all saw how well worked for both, unfortunately with LT finally wearing down the wheels started to come off that bus
Ive been saying to friends since TJ was let go we need another feature back which Shonn Greene is not I want Trent Richardson in this years draft he would alleviate the pressure off of Sanchez.
Agree totally. If Greene was hurt they should have given more carries to McKnight and maybe a few more to Conner. Since Rexy has gotten here the Jets have been gashing the Bills run D.
 what does this guy have to do to prove he's worthy of a starting back. in obvious pain all game, he finishes with 6 yds a carry... the only constant to our offense all day, besides the passing game being in shambles consistently... every time this guy has a hole to run thru he is breaking a tackle and getting into the second level... every one says he needs to be the second back to be effective. how can u say that when schitty never gives him enough carries to control the game... u ppl only say this becuz it is what u saw last year and thats the way it worked out... doesnt mean we NEED to use that strategy... full faith in greene as long as the o-line does its job.
I'm a definitely a bit worried about the run game right now. Greene is a great back but he needs to have someone to split carries with. If LT doesn't come back playing great ( like the beginning of the season last year ) then we will have to look to Mcknight. Joe is good and I think if we start giving him 10 carries a game he'll produce.
I agree. It's hard to judge whether Greene can carry the load when he's been so underutilized. So far he's averaging 14 carries a game. For a #1 RB on a team that's supposed to have a run-first philosophy, that's just ridiculous. The better question is whether he has the durability to be a featured back. He seems to be injured a bit too easily for a power runner. Hopefully he can stay healthy because I think he has the skills to do what the Jets need if they would just stick with the run, and I would hate to see them have to use another high draft pick on a RB.
I am a Shonn Mower backer.... nuthings changed. the guy can carry the load. I think who we really need to give props to is the O-line. Running game was beast all afternoon.
In a close game we needed to win no coach is going to trust a rookie who put the ball on the gound last week.
Completely agree. It's one thing to get on Schotty, Sanchez, or the line (all valid concerns), but I don't see in what universe anyone can be concerned with what Greene has done lately. Since the Jets went back to the 'ground and pound mentality' against NE, here are his yds/game: week 5-4.0 week 6-3.5 week 7-5.6 week 9-4.0 week 10-4.7 week 11-3.3 (only had 3 carries due to injury) week 12-6.0 He does all this while CLEARLY in pain. I was listening to the postgame on the way home from the game and LeGreca (sp?) mentioned that Rex stated if this wasn't a pivotal game, he would have sat Greene in the 1st quarter. His ribs are killing him. After every run he had yesterday it took him at least 2 seconds to get off the ground. The guy has a 4.0 average on the season despite a subpar o-line.
You are entitled to your opionion but even if you say shonn can be an every down back, the guy has to develop into more of a recieving threat, and he also needs to learn how to make people miss in space. he has nice runs for 6-7 yards, but they really should be going for 10-15 yards. I was one of Shonn's BIGGEST supporters out of Iowa and still am. I just think we could use a more talented back at the position rather than just a bruiser.
fair enough... i do agree he is not a receiving threat, but i dont think he should be in there EVERY down anyway... he should be used as primary though... there are only a few backs in the whole league that are in there for all 3 downs nowadays... hopefully his passblocking comes along some more this way he doesnt have to leave the field on passing downs all the time... as far as making ppl miss, hes def not the type of finesse back with great cut back moves, so hes not gonna be breaking any ankles... but i do see him doing a pretty good job with smaller quick changes of direction and shedding arm tackles... hes not gonna break long runs and make safeties miss consistently, but how many long runs did curtis martin ever break? (not that he'll ever be curtis martin by any means, just similar is yards per carry probably) all in all, i think using greene as a primary back and having another guy to give him a break and to use in the passing game can go a long way
I think perhaps the O-line played much better because they saw how much pain Greene was in and they decided to a man to make holes for him to run through. they stepped it up for their 'lil buddy Greene.
When the Jets run the ball, they generally win. The problem truly is Schotty. How can we only have 23 carries when we're averaging 5 yards a carry w/ a struggling quarterback? How does that happen?! It isn't always gonna be pretty. And at crucial moments you will need to throw for success. But when this team sticks to pounding the football, the WHOLE TEAM...all 3 phases play better. The O-line gets into a rhythm Greene starts to wear people down, and by the mid 3rd quarter the opposing front 7 is wore down and suddenly the running lanes open, and Sanchez can scan the field comfortably as the Dline has lost their pass rush burst from the ground and pound. It's a thing of beauty when you have a Rex Ryan defense...if only the OC wasn't literally trying to run the Air Coryell instead.
It does not matter, even if we had Barry Sanders and Erick Dickerson, BS is a pass first style OC, he would split thirty carries between the RB's. We should be a run first team but it's evident that's not going to be the case, he has been told to pull the reins in on being a pass first offense the first couple of years with Rex Ryan, but he always falls back to what his philosophy is.
This is exactly what makes me not want any real talented RB on this team (signing of a Matt Forte in FA) because he would be swallowed up into Schotty's black whole of an offense. Any talent on the offense can produce more in majority of other system's, like Holmes... We simply need a new OC. It baffles me every game when I see us run for 1st down after 1st down in the first quarter, and then we abandon the run for the rest of the game. So frustrating as a fan
Freeman u are correct---the offensive line blows and the OC is almost as bad. They never give Greene the ball 20 / 25 times a game even when we play against bad run defenses Shotty gets cute and does not take advantage! Then to make matters worse for Greene,,,nearly always especially when LT is healthy the take # 23 out of the lineup when we get inside the other guys TEN yard line ---simply amazing!
