When I first met my wife I used to gaze at her lovingly, hold her hand in public, shower her with kisses, give her little trinkets of affection. Now we argue in public, barely glance at each other affection replaced with the knowledge that we have each other’s backs no matter what and will attend to each other’s deepest needs and desires no matter what.

Don’t mistake the outward contempt that every long term Jets fan feels for this team as anything more than a deep mature love that your puppy dog glances can’t even pretend to understand.

there are alot of dumb football fans here who have no clue about the game or the team and the history. Then there are those of us who have been fans for 40+ yrs, who love the Jets and don't whine and complain when things don't always go are way. THere are also the frontrunners who only support the team when they are winning and bitch and whine when they lose. F them. they are not real fans.

If you look at the jets since 98 we have been a fairly solid franchise. A bunch of playoff games 3 AFC championship games. A lot of franchises have not had that success but there are two things that make me as a jet fan frustrated with this team 1) 40 + years without a superbowl 2) almost the entire time during this run we have been second fiddle to the patriots.

I think a lot of jets fans are tired of having moderate success and the loss to the patriots was another reminder that 1) that super bowl will once again require us to win 3 games on the road making it unlikely 2) the pats are once again the model of consistency and still top dog in the division.

Being a fan means riding the ups and downs of your team. On Friday I was vowing not to watch another game this year and was writing off this team for dead. Can't protect the qb, can't run, stupid turnovers this is just a bad team. On Sunday night I'm thinking can't wait fir the buffalo game were one game out of the wild card and why can't the jets get it again cincy, Denver,Tennessee, buffalo??? That's our competition. I like our chances to fix things, Rex always finds a way and make a run.

If you don't have emotional swings like this after a loss or a win then how big a fan are you?

I think what the "sunshiners", and I only use that term to make my point, are failing to realize, is that it is a deep, deep love for this fucking frustrating team that causes the outbursts, anger and somewhat ridiculous comments after losses.

Especially for those like myself who have beenwatching and following for 20, 30, 40 years without a SB.

This is my 32nd year....yeah, Im fuckin frustrated and yeah, Im allowed to say ridiculous things on a fucking message board.

BELIEVE me, Im no less of a fan than some 19 year old with Mark Sanchez posters in his room that is too blind to see that perhaps Sanchez is not the answer.

    Awesome post.

I didn't cry walking out of Heinz Field last year but it took about a month to get over it. I'm disappointed with the results this season too but it has a lot to do with Rex.

I will say this, I'm very happy this is only Rex's 3rd year. He certainly has raised expectation for this team unlike any other coach before that i can remember. Even if we miss the playoffs this year, he has a fire and a drive to make this team relevant every year and I want him retiring from this team.

I don't really care about the headline quotes, or Rex not being a model coach, or how he handles the media. To me none of that is relevant. Making this time a perennial playoff contender and the W column is all I give a shit about.

Only those who think when Rex says "we will win the Superbowl", that means "we will win the Superbowl". It's actually a much more complex statement which means:

-look lively, scrubs: I have faith in your ability
-step it up, core players: we have a new identity and we're playing to win
-don't hold anything back, vets: this is your last, best chance
-get excited and take those wallets out, Jets fans: this is totally maybe our year
-start whining and snickering, media and opposing teams' fans: all publicity is good publicity.

Sorry, but when you turn the sound down on Rex - as you should because he isn't really talking to us - and take a look at the roster and coaches, it is this year what it has been since Rex got here. We're a team that can beat anyone with defensive scheme and effort on any given day, but just doesn't have the quality to dominate, or even play well consistently. It's been a great run, and I still think we make the playoffs if Wayne gets over his psychological hang-ups about being the starter, but you can't expect them to overachieve every year.

A lot of great posts in this thread. I am confident that this team is committed to winning from the top on down, and I haven't always felt that way in years past.

I peruse this board daily, for different reasons. When the Jet's are playing poorly and losing games the old adage "misery loves company" applies. As everyone can agree, the emotional investment in this team is so great that you need an outlet when things are going poorly. This board fills a need, especially when your wife isn't a football fan and your son is too young to understand the frustration that comes with watching this team for 35 years. Trying to rationalize your emotional reaction to a lost football game is a case study in cognitive dissonance, as upon watching the suck-fest over the past two weeks, we need to offset our attachment and seemingly unattainable hopes through criticism.

When the Jets are winning, I use this board as a centralized resource for Jets related news and a place for some enlightening insight to football. However, I typically don't post when things are going well, for several reasons. One, never having played football, I often can't add to the info presented by the more knowledgeable members and see little point in posting something that adds no further value; there are way too many useless comments. Secondly, most threads get hijacked with buffoonery and I don’t have the patience to read through pages of bullshit to get to some informative opinion. And lastly, the amount of unrealistic, kool-aid inspired blind optimism outweighs the negativity. The amount of, “we're going to win out the season”, or “we should beat next weeks opponents easily” garbage is maddening, especially after watching the inept offensive performance of the past couple of weeks. The next game needs to be view in context of the most recent performance. Based on the past two games, the only optimism should be cautious optimism.

I can remember watching Richard Todd make piss poor decisions like Sanchez has over the past few weeks and have been watching this team through thick-and-thin for longer than most of you have been alive. The cumulative misery of watching more losing than winning seasons, after watching a half time lead against Denver disappear resulting in a lost title game and especially in light of a loud mouth coach promising a superbowl appearance, is unbearable at times. Watching this team's offense, with some excellent talent flounder worse than a Tim Tebow lead fuckfest is enough to lead a pacifist to violence. I used to drive from Boston to Western MA every weekend to watch this team and support them every week by watching the whole game, no matter what the team's current record is or what the score is, by purchasing branded products and by following them in the news. Try living in Boston over the past decade with Pats fans constantly gloating in your face...when things go poorly, I reserve the right to bitch, and this is the forum.

There are always going to be homers and darksiders, that's how people are. Fans will get mad and vent, and they will vent because it will relieve the stress by getting whatever intelligent or stupid comments off their chest. I love venting when I get pissed because as soon as I'm done, I'm not angry anymore. Right now I'm more negative about the situation we are in. I don't think we will make the playoffs, we have to win out and we have the Giants and Eagles, and I really really wanted to beat those teams this year, because we've never beat the goddamn Eagles, and haven't beat the Giants since the 1993 and have lost 4 straight, I don't think we can beat them. I will still root for this team to win out and I will root for them no matter what until I'm dead. That's me, there is going to be plenty of football to be played. If this season doesn't work out, then on to the next one.
