When does the league hand out the fines? Von Miller unfazed about possible fine for hits on Sanchez Posted by Mike Florio on November 18, 2011, 9:23 PM EST On Thursday night, the Broncos defeated the Jets, thanks in part to a strong defensive effort led by rookie linebacker Von Miller, who regularly harassed New York quarterback Mark Sanchez. On Friday night, Miller joined NBC SportsTalk to discuss the victory. But Miller may eventually hear from the league office. Careful examination of three hits by Miller on Sanchez that seemed to involve the defender’s helmet suggests that, although no flags were thrown, one of the plays likely will trigger a fine. Specifically, Miller placed the crown of his helmet forcibly into Sanchez’s chest after Sanchez threw a pass to running back Joe McKnight with just under nine minutes remaining in the second quarter. During his visit to NBC SportsTalk, Miller said he’s not worried about getting fined, ultimately summing up his views on the situation with this gem: “Shoot first and ask questions later.”
i was very surprised taht he didnt get flagged twice. while i think the roughing the passer penalties are gay as hell, they still must be enforced. they were not. i dont blame him for the hits or for not giving a flying fuck about getting fined, its football.
I made a thread about this right after the game. He was late hit blatantly twice and no penalty. Fucking refs can suck a dick in hell with Hitler.
Man the NFL is like the NBA some players get the flag thrown and others dont get shit....the bottom line is if Hunter would fuckin man up and grow a set Mark wouldnt have gotten hit at all....
I'd like to see side-by-side gifs of Campbell getting pushed and Sanchez getting speared in the back.
That's because WILKERSON is playing for the Jets. That flag will be thrown. If Sanchez is hit late? Don't even dream about it.
Seriously though the one where he got hit in the back was really bad, no matter what your views are on "roughing the passer" that should have been a penalty no matter who took the hit, because he clearly did not have possession of the ball for a long time, and he was standing completely defenselessly with his back to Miller and he just lowered his helmet and went for it. In my opinion, Von Miller (or rather his lack of flags) won that game, because Mark was clearly in pain while throwing/too afraid to step up after that. And can you really blame him?
The NFL is more concerned with how Rex Ryan talks to fans after the game then they are about protecting certain QB's. I don't wanna hear Brady's name brought up either because I've seen him take his share of them lately as well including some shots around his legs. The bottom line is if your going to have this in the rules then it needs to be enforced. If fines aren't enough to deter players from taking cheap illegal hits on a QB then more severe actions should be taken. Personally if the NFL didn't make such a big deal out of protecting defenseless players I'd have no issue with the hits but they do and therefore should be enforced across the board.
Von Miller's attitude is pretty much the same as most defenders in the league (including some on the Jets). The fines are small compared to their salaries so I don't think players really give a damn about it.
The fines are a joke - the only way to stop it (if that's what the league wants) is for players to be suspended for the next game(s) - their coaches will then make damn sure that they play to the rules - why the hell would a coach care if a player gets fined? Its not coming out of his pocket he just wants to get the win.
