Usually you send those blitzes when you want to prevent a QB from having time to make a good throw. Were we really concerned that Tebow was going to beat us with his arm there? I mean, fck E. Smith for not containing TEbow but the call itself was questionable I would say. Such a shame, that D really played lights out for most of the game
I think the idea was to rush so many to flush Tebow out of the pocket, and then to contain him making him to pass, which would've most probably ended up as an incompletion or better a pick, but Zebra got a little too excited, took a horrible angle and lost containment while Cro and Wilson were pussying upfield "engaged" to their "blockers", kinda like Revis pussied away from a sure tackle on Tebow a couple of plays earlier.
Havent seen the replay, but it looked like they sent the house and no one was assigned contain. That is a bad play call... Somebody's gotta play contain when Tebow is QB.
This..in gameplay you see the extra emphasis by Pace to jump out on the edge and try to funnel them in, and it has gotten better (especially from the Oak debacle), but then this comes up again. They've done a better job of containing stretch and toss plays, but there really isn't an excuse to crash in so early instead of staying disciplined and driving up the field to keep contain. On that play, even a spy, just one would make me feel better if they were going with a heavy blitz.
It don't think it was bad call, just horribly executed. I thought leonard had contain but took a really bad angle on it. Cromartie playing patty cake with his receiver while watching teabow run in was disgusting.
Smith had the edge and lost it. But you don't go cover Zero, against a guy that makes his living with his legs. You make him throw. Even if you get the sack there, they kick the FG...What are you gaining ?
My main point, if Tebow throws a TD there I can live with it. But to allow him to run for a TD is criminal. I don't know what the hell E. Smith was thinking there by taking that angle.
Of all the things that went wrong during the game, that all out blitz was the worst freakin call and cost us the game. All we had to do was rush 4 and we most likely contain Tebow who was looking to run every down at that point. With our corners playing man all Tebow had to do was get pass our rush and he walks into the endzone. Even though it shouldn't have come to that, and our offense looked like shit, that play sent me over the edge.
You are only as good as your weakest link. Smith is by far the weakest link on our Defense, and it has been showing for several weeks now.
Smith has been blowing assignments all year. It's been so many, I lost count. That was supposed to be a containment play. And, what is he do? He runs in and to the left of Tebow, thus allowing him to run free to the outside and down the field. Worse blown coverage by Smith this year. Rex has lost his mind if he thinks this guy can play safety. Smith's got to go. An example needs to be set.
He over pursued on another play where the A gap was wide open and Denver got a big gain. He's been figured out. Its time to be sat down and relegated to spot duty.
It could have been Pettine's call. Mayock was talking him up last night as if he was HOF'er Lebeau in Pittsburgh.
I think Rex thought that he would force Tebow to the run outside and the defense would have the egdes contained, but Smith just could not get in proper position. He should have played it more conservatively though. You can give up a 1st, but not a TD there, and the Broncos looked content to settle for 3 there and take it to OT. It was truly a baffling call.
We have been awful at setting the edge since BT went down. The play calling on that entire drive was awful for the most part.
That is a great point. Bryan Thomas being out has really hurt this team. He was great at setting the edge, and no one has been able to replace him in that role.
I'm not sure I'd label Revis a "pussy" for the handling of that tackle. A pussy he's certainly not. COME ON, MAN. I think he fully expected Tebow to predictably run out of bounds (like 31 other NFL quarterbacks in the league would have done), but instead, Tebow being Tebow, decided to stay in bounds and try to bowl Revis over. This team wasn't prepared for Tebow and the Broncos. 4 days preparation is bullshit, but they were ready and we weren't. Simple as that. And all the talk about "kicking ass" and "we're goin' to the Superbowl" is bullshit also. Fuck that. Revis is the man. He walks the walk. Ryan talks the talk. Big difference. Fucking prepare yourself, dude.
It didn't work so well week 3 at Oakland while Thomas was still there. This team just has no speed outside of the cornerback position. I pains to say this, but I wish we still had Sherry Rhodes back there. Actually, while were wishing I'd settle for the 06-07 version of Rhodes. That doesn't sound so bad now.
