not to go back to the past but today while playing golf with my dad he brought up the Lamont Jordan issue. He has always been saying they should have tagged him instead of letting him go to Oakland. One reason why I brought this up is because it shows how bad of an orginzation the Jets really are, when they are spending an early pick on a running back especailly when Martin was aging they shouldve thought he is the running back of the future for the team, and in a way it was a waste of draft pick. I know that Martn still had a few good years left when they drafted him and he didn't want to backup any more but if they somehow found a way to keep him which they couldve, right now and even for last season they would of had no problems at running back and the position looks good for the next few seasons. Good orginizations such as the Eagles or Patriots use the draft in good ways with each pick thats why they are always at the top of their division and conferences each season. You can't be thinking well its only pick. You only get 7 a year. I might be wrong on the subject but this is what i think of the situation let me know what everyone else thinks agrees or disagrees.
if i'm not mistaken the decision was the tag him or abe and that was the right one...the mistake was made the year before when they could have had a 2nd or 3rd rounder for him...either way there was no way he could have/should have stayed after the year Martin had...it was a no win for him or the jets...I think in retrospect it couldn't have happened any other way...the Jets didn't know what martin had left and they couldn't tag him over abe...
I was as big a Jordan fan as there was, but with Martin coming off a gigantic season and with his contract, there is no way you can sign Jordan. Even if we gave him the 5 years, 25 million, why would he sign here for that to be a backup? We had to let him go, simple as that. And you can't tag both Abraham and Jordan. That's erroneous.
"Good orginizations such as the Eagles or Patriots use the draft in good ways with each pick thats why they are always at the top of their division and conferences each season. You can't be thinking well its only pick. You only get 7 a year." Look at how many Running Backs the Eagles have drafted recently, or how many TE's the Patriots have drafted...although they might be the model, it doesn't mean they also don't make mistakes.
The Lamont Jordan pick was a little bit of a panic pick. The Jets were going to take Matt Light from Purdue but when the Pats found out that the Jets were on the phone with him, they traded in front of us and took Matt. That's why we took Lamont. This shows his staffs failure more than letting Lamont walk in my opinion.:breakdance:
The jets lost Jordan in 2002, not 2005. After Jordan rushed for 8 yards PER CARRY as a rookie in 2001 , the next summer Birdbrain Boobway then gives Martin an 8 year contract at age 29. No GM other than Boobway would be so stupid. Jordan couldn't wait to jump ship after WATCHING Martin for 4 years.
Call me crazy but I'd rather make the playoffs than have Jordan play because he's young. Without leaning on Martin the Jets don't make the playoffs at all with the team that Bradway and Edwards assembled. It sucks that Jordan didn't get to become a starter here, but to me it's a fair price to pay for multiple playoff berths.
Two problems with the previous organization For Bradway it was the dumb bargaining skills, he made it so obvious that the organization wanted or didnt want somebody. Bradway practically ended up losing his job because we gave away Herm for NOTHING. He totally, totally f***ed up the Chad Morton signing and let the Redskins rape the team of talent. Although Bradway has had decent drafts, bad ones were evident also. 1st pick for Jolley, trading two picks for D-Rob, drafting Bryan Thomas, it goes on. He has yet to draft a pro-bowler, although Vilma did make it but due to injuries and such, he played backup. Vilma will likely make the pro-bowl this year but my point is that Bradway shouldnt be considered a draft genious. Herm's problem was the obvious, conservative playcalling, horrible time management, horrible playcalling down the stretch etc...
The talent that took the Jets to playoff beths in recent years was Pennington, Ellis, Martin, Abraham, Coles, Fabini, and Mawae - all brought in by Parcells. Bradway's brightest stars? T Kareem McKenzie, S.Moss (only one good seaso with us though). Truth is that the 2001 draft was a good draft - 2 stars and a very good starter, plus if Henderson doesn't get hurt, a possible CB or S starter, and then nice DT depth in Reed. We just didn't keep any of these guys... The rest of the Bradyway drafts until 2004 were not very good, netting some starters, but no stars. The '04 draft looks pretty good so far, with a legit star in Vilma, a couple of other starters and near-starters, and some good depth. It's early to judge the 2005 draft, but it looks decent so far if not spectacular.
You can't give Parcells the credit for Coles or Pennington. Groh didn't even consider playing them. I know, he drafted them, and made the trade for Keyshawn (which was an awesome move). However, Pennington was kind of handed to the Jets... How he made it to 18 was beyond everyone's understanding. Bradway did good in the later rounds of the draft.
Well yes if talking of ONLY the franchise tag but if you tagged Jordan with the transition tag then what you posted was somewhat incorrect. You are allowed to 2 tag players but only 1 with each tag
Martin and Jordan in Retrospect I thought at the time that they should have kept Jordan and let Martin go. Now, the easy thing to do (and what they did) was to keep Martin. He was coming off a great year after all. BUT...good teams think ahead and get rid of aging stars while they still can get value for them. It would have taken guts but they would have gotten value and wound up with a good running back (Jordan) for a longer period of time.
Oh really, Where? Why haven't we gotten this Jordan talent yet? You all say RB's are "a dime a Dozen" so We sit here 3 years later still waiting for this RB You can find by the dozen. The JETS did make a mistake, some of us called it and when it pans out just like we said it would all these BS excuses come in. We saw Martin was on his last Legs and Knew that Most of his Success in that Year was because of that Devestating O-Line. Truth is the Martin fanatics felt threatened by Jordan and couldn't accept it so they Hated him and made up all these BS excuses just to see him go. The JETS screwed up. PERIOD.
so screwing up is keeping martin instead of jordan, who ended up leading the league in rushing in 2004 and taking us to the playoffs were if not for Doug Brien who could have been in the AFC championship
Um, remind me who rushed for 8 yards PER CARRY for Seattle last year as a backup like Jordan did in 2001 as a rookie. Nobody? I didn't think so. Point was we had our future back and Boobway alienated Jordan by signing Martin until the END of 2009--Oh, that's right....you think Martin will last that long in the NFL. Good rebuilding.
