WTF was this OBSESSION with a cornerback who is NOT anywhere near as good as Revis and might not be better than Cromartie ? Yeah, he was a shutdown CB in Oakland -- mostly because nobody threw on them since they were regularly blow out during the Jamarcus Russell Era and their Run D stunk. Check out what he's done in Philly -- he's heading for Mitch Williams Territory with the tolerant Philly fans. So we wait on Asomugha, let our guys leave, use most of our cap space on Cromartie (overpaying there too), and now find outselves 5-5. Instead of bringing back Edwards, Crotchery, and Woody....Tannenbaum gives us Hunter and Burress (out of football for 2 years but selfish as ever). Tannenbaum got too cute. His LT-for-Jones switch was a wash, but he got greedy and changed too much of the team in a lockout-shortened season. Oh yeah, Edwards and Crotchery -- 2 guys who Sanchez threw to for 2 years and worked out with on the West Coast -- are not around on any 3rd-and-longs.
*Cotchery Completely agreed on Edwards, but if Woody was worth keeping wouldn't he be on another team right now? I'm not saying I had a ton of faith in Hunter coming into this season but Woody wasn't the answer.
edwards is the biggest miss since we cant throw deep anymore the deep ball to braylon kept teams honest in the running game
put tanny back handling the cap and bring ina real gm- i don't care if it's casserly, the tuna, a current assistant with a winning team, or the current head scout. no bradway and no bean-counters.
we could have had woody for basically nothing, so that had nothing to do with it but have you seen the guy's knees/legs? I remember he tweeted a pic after his achilles surgery and the guy has more scars on his lower leg than a manatee's back. I think it was just time for him to hang it up. The guy has battled injuries for a long time and i think there was no coming back from that
I'd still take Cro, Burress, and Hunter over Edwards, Cotch, and Woody. Jets wanted Woody back at a reasonable price but he wanted to retire, and based on last year's performance it was a fair assumption that Hunter would be able to fill in. Burress has been great recently, and is at least as good as Edwards. And it's not Tanny's fault Cotchery wanted out, but Kerley's been fine in the slot. I don't really think the offseason was the problem at all.
Cotch wanted out Edwards wanted more money Woody retired Cotch has done little and Edwards is yet again not a redzone threat.
I think LT has worked out well in place of Jones. Greene is the same kind of back as him, LT brings a different dynamic to the team.
You can't honestly believe that. He's 7 years older, 2 steps slower, 2 years removed from the game and didn't have any chemistry with Sanchez until October. They never should have let Edwards leave.
Overall, I agree with your post. We came in with a below market offer and let this guy handcuff us. we could have gotten jonathan joseph for roughly the same amount of money we gave Cro if we went after him from the start. Joseph is a better cover corner than Cro is (who, to be fair, hasn't been the reason this team is losing..so it's more of a side point) I do believe Braylon's ego played a big part, but i was saying this in the offseason and i knwo people like IJR agreed with me...........that he should have been the #1 priority in terms of WR. Now, i don't know how he would have faired if we had to let go of santonio as a result, but i think he was the more valuable WR and if we had set the market with his contract first, maybe we could have gotten tone for less than 10 mil. we had cap space this year too.....so if you could have gotten them at 8 and maybe 7 mil a piece, it's pretty close to the 13 or so we spent combined on tone and plax.
The fumbles on KR's are making me remember Brad Smith with great fondness at this point. He probably wasn't worth the contract he got with Buffalo though.
First off anyone that thinks it was Tanny's sole decision to go after Nmandi, is an idiot. That was mostly Rex's obsession, they work in concert. Yeah going after him was dumb................oh well.
Bullshit.. Burress for the Jets is a down grade compared to Braylon on the Jets. Braylon was a complete threat for this team, period. He was outstanding blocking on the outside, he gave us a legitimate deep threat that teams had to respect, and he was much more physical. He also IMO made Holmes much more dangerous then he is without that compliment. Wayne Hunter is a huge reason why Sanchez hasn't been very comfortable in the pocket. The opposing defense is constantly getting pressure, something he hasn't had to face very often in his previous two years, and it is showing in a big way. Sanchez is rushing throws a lot because Hunter is getting owned on a consistent basis. How does he get bullrushed like a rag doll by Von Miller in such a crucial moment in that game? That is unacceptable. Woody may not have been the answer, but when you don't add quality depth to that line you are doomed from the start. Especially when you are banking on Hunter to be a quality starter, you should probably have a back up plan. This offseason has a shit load to do with why the Jets look average.
Btw Braylon would have rather went to the 49'ers for shit money than signed with the Jets for less $ than what Holmes made. Yes it was a huge ego problem.
I can't figure out why Tannenbaum didn't just reach across the desk punch Ryan playfully on the shoulder and say "Asomugha? Fuck you, I just spent a bajillion dollars on Revis for you and spent last years #1 on Wilson. Make that work." With a smile of course.
This actually does bring up an excellent point though. I think the fact Rex is a defensive coach and that Tanny isn't really the most knowledgable "football" guy really hurt them in terms of the offseason plan...don't get me wrong, he's a great GM but he's not really great at understanding the nuisances of football. Shit, even Rex who is a great football guy didn't realize the importance on continuity on offense, or rather...how easy it is to disrupt that. They really thought they were just going to be able to plug these guys in (Plax and Mason) and replace the chemistry and dynamic of the previous WR core. But they're different skillsets, present different matchups for the opposing team, and that continuity is a major factor. I think they'll learn from this, but i can guarantee you they're probably kicking themselves in terms of undervaluing these things
1. Woody - he wanted to return for one last swansong before Tannenbaum pulled the plug. At least check the facts. 2. Burress has been as good as Edwards? Are you smoking something? Burress is not stretching the field like Edwards did. As good as Edwards? My fucking ass. 3. Jets had real hole in RT, FS, #2 CB and WR. Instead of taking care of the business, Tannenbaum sat on his ass waiting for Asomugha. Bryant McKinnie and Matt Birk were both available during the free agency, and Wayne Hunter didn't have to start at RT in the first place. Birk wouldn't have come to NY, but McKinnie at RT would be a lot more reasonable than that road pylon disguising as RT. If Tannenbaum didn't sabotage the team waiting for Asomugha, he could have gone after Johnathan Joseph, Dawan Landry, Braylon Edwards AND Bryant McKinnie all at the same time - and possibly would have come away with them all, provided some of the contracts were re-done. There he has failed to do his job, fair and square.
We did not lose anyone who is caused us to lose any games. I agree we didn't do ANYTHING to improve our team, but the pieces we lost were role players with the exception of maybe Woody, but saying he would be better than Hunter could be a stretch since he is coming off surgery. One thing I believe is this team has proved year in and out we are not complacent, we have always tried to improve our team through FA, trades, and the draft. The one year we didn't in the last 3 years and we saw what happened, 5-5 playing inconsistent football.
