I think he's a tad indecisive on short yardage runs. When he is presented with a hole he goes thru it with speed and power though.
Yes, we do. He's a complimentary back trying to fill a starter's role. His vision is subpar and so are the majority of his performances.
oh im sorry let me rephrase that. we dont know how good greene is, but mr. electric does and he also sees thru shonn's eyes... and the o-line's performances havent been sub par.
The pass protection has been sub-par. The run blocking over the past few weeks has been very good. We constantly see Greene get into the second level and then get taken down. He does not run through contact. I can watch the kid play and see that he has mediocre vision. That's not hard to see. I watch enough football to know the difference between a special tailback and a spell back.
Not shocking numbers at all. Greene had very similar numbers last season. His YPC was 4.1 in 2010. He's also never scored more than 2 TDs in a regular season. The kid's not a playmaker. He's a clock-control back on a team that can't get first downs.
thats why i said YOU know. but we dont. you clearly are the expert here. and i definitely dont watch enough football. and i must be imagining greene barrell through some ppl and run guys over this season. oh yeah and the run block has been very good the past few weeks. and whata ya know greene has had his best games then. aside from sunday when they completely abandoned the run. seriously your know it all attitude is pathetic. im fairly new this board, this being my 1st season posting, and your posts stick out more in my mind than anyone elses. i feel like all you do is disagree with ppl, and force your opinions on ppl whenever they think differently, you may be right or you may be wrong just like everyone else on this board, the point is we all speculate and share OPINIONS. now we could argue this all day but winning this conversation is not a priority of mine. if i wasnt bored at work i wouldnt even be entertaining your need for debate. works done so goin home to watch my team. peace.
So, people that are clearly wrong can share their opinions on this issue, but I can't? Makes sense. It's my OPINION that Shonn Greene is overrated by this fan base. I'm sorry that I'm not a blatant homer that thinks Shonn Greene is a high caliber running back. He is a mediocre talent playing behind a very good run blocking line. Thanks for posting in poem form.
Greene and McKnight need to go 65%/35% carries, respectively. Greene contrary to my initial belief (circa 2009/10) is a complimentary back. I guess he's similar to Brandon Jacobs. People thought he was going to be a beast for the vagiants but he never really panned out. Greene is the same way, he's destined for RBBC for the rest of his career. Without great blocking or pass catching ability opposing defenses can fill the void between the tackles and keep Greene under control. McKnight needs to see time to keep defenses honest, split backfield preferably if Conner ain't in.
Look, we all know Mr E is a complete dick. And IM sure he doesnt mind me pointing it out here, but hes ABSOLUTELY right on this one. I dont see how anyone can argue. The big Greene supporters on this site must be basing their opinions on two or three runs in playoff games. Other than that, the man has never showed anything special. His numbers have been consistenly unspecial, no vision, no ability to make people miss, he doesnt bowl people over despite what some of you say. Hes another average talent on this team which is full of average talent
To me, half of running back's production comes from the OL play - unless you are an RB of Barry Sanders's caliber, that's where you belong like the majority of RBs do. You then have to know that the OL play has regressed in a rather huge way. Like I said, unless you are Barry Sanders, you WILL experience drop-off in production, when your OL is not doing their job. The OL play has regressed in three major areas: 1. They are not generating enough push at the point of the attack. (This is the largest problem now.) 2. They are not creating enough holes, creases and flows for the run game and lastly 3. There is no next level blocking - that IS the hallmark of zone-blocking scheme. If you cannot provide any second level blocking, then basically you are wasting your OL personnel away while accomplishing nothing. When these things happen in conjunction with each other, it literally bottles up the running game. On top of that, this OL is not really a physical mauler line - outside Mangold and Moore, no one physically dominates the DL across the LoS. This means man-blocking scheme is but out of question. With this OL at the current state, Jets are forced to stick with finesse running scheme. So, Greene may not be the ideal every down back, but know that he is not getting the necessary help from the OL either.
He hasn't done so bad given some of the o-line troubles this year. He's a valuable asset, but far from an all-purpose back. He still has talent nonetheless and he does deserve some touches, but I don't expect him to carry our team, nor do I think he's capable of it in the first place.
The run blocking isn't the problem. The offensive line's run blocking wasn't great at the beginning of the year, but that's when Moore was still a little banged up. For the past four weeks, they've been pretty damn good. Greene can't make things happen when he gets to the next level. People see that our offensive line is struggling in pass protection and assume it must be happening with run blocking too. That's not the case here. I've seen plenty of runs where he's had blocking from Moore or Slauson at the next level and he doesn't cutback to use his blocks. He runs straight ahead and makes no one miss. When we put him in space by running to the outside, he can get good yardage. Even then, he can't break the long run. Greene's vision and lack of playmaking ability is what's holding the rushing attack back.
Nothing wrong with Greene. The guy is running against stacked boxes all the time. When Connor, Mulligan and the jumbo TE package are in the game the D knows he is getting the ball and he is still averaging 4 yards a carry in spite of this. If McKnight can become the full time change of pace of back who has the ability to cut back and break some long gainers then the running game will be just deadly. LT just doesn't have that burst anymore. The problem with McKnight right now in his limited carries is that he is hesitant to hit the hole. Once he finds the hole though he has burst and good change of direction.
Agree with the above, but I'd like to use McKnight in the same manner as Darren Sproles. That being said, the Jets don't run 4 or 5 wide sets so it's not that simple.
I don't think there's something "wrong" with Greene, but I do agree with some that he probably isn't as good as we thought he would be. That doesn't mean he shouldn't have a place on this team in the future. Hell, he's still on pace for 1000 yards (albeit barely). They just need to be more aggressive about supplementing the backfield with other options and maybe not relying on Greene to become an every-down back.
Greene does not have the lateral agility, nor the ability to get to the hole, of an elite back. He's an average blocker and a poor receiver. While not elite, he IS a good, solid performer. He's the kind of back that you want to see share carries with a faster TB who can get to the edge. He's also fine for 90% of the carries once your OL has established domination of the line. He is what he is.
I just hope our game plan doesn't suck major ballsack. Like last sunday we're running the ball for 6 ypc and they throw 3 times inside the what..10?
