Who didn't know this. Stop taking Boise State corners and upgrade this position. Or stop taking fucking d-lineman in the first round that don't contribute. These guys think they're all soooo smart. Schotty, Rex, and Tannenbaum are all a bunch of mopes to be honest
What a fucking travesty it is seeing this defense fumble around there...Kyle Wilson not knowing who to cover. Smith man coverage skills is worse then a high school football player Just a bad game Not to mention...WE HAVE NO PASS RUSH
He has his "big hit" here and there but overall he cannot tackle or cover at all. How the hell Rex and the CS view him to be a starting safety in this league I will never understand.
The thing that kills me about Smith is that he plays stupid. The Jets have a good enough scheme to cover for most of his bad coverage and lack of recovery speed, but Smith is also responsible for so many backbreaking penalties (see: his senseless facemask that set up Gronkowski burning him for a touchdown.) He's still our best option at his position for now, but finding a safety who won't be completely hopeless against the Gronkowski's and Miller's of the world should be a high priority this offseason.
One of the most head scratching transactions of this off-season was cutting Dwight Lowery. He seemed to have been coming into his own as a safety learning a new position and played pretty well for us last yr. We sorely miss him.
Yeah Poole screwed up his MCL against the Bills (a game where he started and the D was phenomenal!) But I agree with DeVito, both Eric Smith and Matt Mulligan are terrible. Anytime Mulligan is on the field its like playing 10 vs 11 or sometimes 10 vs 12 cause he's either throwing defenders into the ball carrier or holding. Its getting to be effing ridiculous. Things to get this off-season: Running back Safety Rotational Pass Rusher Back-up Tight End Pictures of people blocking to show D'Brickashaw before plays because he seems to have forgotten how to do it. Things that could be done right now: Cut Smith and Mulligan
smith was awful this game, but so were a lot of people. Smith had a great game against the bills, and a pretty good game against the chargers. We certainly need better safeties (especially in coverage) but he's just one of many who sucked ass today.
At this point I can only assume that you're an Andy Kauffman-level comedic genius because a moron would have said something worth-while by accident at this point. Kudos. As to the subject of the tread: Smith is a great special teams player but was overrated by the CS as a starter. He's a #3 safety at best whose main purpose should be run-support. We're going to have to target some FA big-time in the offseason for this position if there's a chance to improve this position.
Eric Smith wasn't the answer BEFORE the season. He was lousy last year. He's a good tackler, but in space he's worthless. This is on the front office because they didn't address this problem BEFORE the season. I know because of the lockout, there was little time. But they should have drafted someone.
Should've paid Weddle or somebody. Guess we were too busy worrying about A$o to worry about the guys behind him
Smith sucks but so does the overall safety play around the league. Who was out there for the Jets to go get? A bunch of scrub ex-Jets are starting at S for various teams around the league, that should tell you everything you need to know. I assume the CS knows that Smith sucks in pass coverage but with Pool out what choice do they really have but to stick him back there and hope for the best?
