From NYJets.com Pop Quiz After one full week of preparation, New York Jets head coach Eric Mangini presented his team with not one, but two pop quizzes during Thursday morning?s practice ? the team?s 10th overall training camp workout. The players? reaction to the impromptu practice change was encouraging for the first year coach, as a handful of great plays and overall progress followed Mangini?s challenge. The first test probably caught a few players and coaches off-guard, as it was issued immediately following the team?s warm-up routine. Mangini split his offense and defense on opposing sidelines and placed two units in a critical last drive situation. The drill was meant to see how his team - both coaches and players - reacts to situations that don?t go as planned, which happens more often than not during games. ?What we were trying to accomplish there is randomly throw out a situation and see how people respond,? Mangini said at his daily press conference. ?They are all things we have talked about in the meetings, but it doesn?t create the same response when you have to respond to it without knowing it is coming. Things come up that aren?t in the plan, but you have to adjust to it, draw on past experiences and know to respond to that.? Patrick Ramsey, who struggled some in Wednesday night?s practice, took a few steps forward throughout Thursday?s first practice, especially during Professor Mangini?s second pop quiz. Immediately following positional drills, Mangini called the unsuspecting players back to the grass and presented another late game situation. This time around, Ramsey had 50 seconds to erase a six point deficit, and that?s exactly what he did. The march was highlighted by a 21-yard completion in the middle of the field to Justin McCareins, followed by a ten-yard catch by Tim Dwight. At the 30-yard line with just 11 seconds remaining, Ramsey scrambled wildly to his right, but was able to unleash a bullet to the far left side of the end zone, piercing right between the one and eight on Reggie Newhouse?s uniform. Newhouse, a third-year receiver signed this off-season, has had a very promising training camp so far. His impressive start has not slipped away from Mangini?s observant radar. ?I think Reggie has done a good job, showing up a little bit each day,? said Mangini. ?He made a couple of difficult catches where you open your eyes and say, okay, we need to spend a little more time looking at this.?
This is impressive! The new coach obviously wants his players to know exactly what do to in a given situation. He doesn't need an assistant coach to watch the play clock - he wants everyone on the team - coaches and players - to have it in their heads and to know what to do. I am very very impressed!
Old Sperm never had a camp like this. I am very impressed, and hope this number 18 turns out to start. He sounds better than Jmac.
Newhouse is having an impressive camp but none the less, he won't start simply because of all the guys in front of him who have proven themselves, or have been drafted by this organization... Newhouse will be lucky to make the team and he would probably be the #6 WR Coles J-mac Cotchery Dwight Brad Smith Newhouse thats IF we keep 6 wr
Agreed, however, if JMac wants to stay so high on your list he'll need to show some serious improvement in the preseason.
Just a few other notes about Newhouse: "Couldn’t help but notice that WR Justin McCareins was replaced by Tim Dwight at flanker. For some reason, I don’t think Mangini has warmed to McCareins. Even Reggie Newhouse, a free agent, got some work with the first team in three-receiver sets." Aug. 3rd Cimini "There are some salary-cap considerations with McCareins. If the Jets cut or trade him, they’d get stuck with $1 million this year in dead money and another $3 million in 2007. P.S.: Keep an eye on Reggie Newhouse, a free agent. The staff really likes him." Aug. 4 Cimini
I read another article from Boston.com about Mangini giving the Jets pop quizes all the time - and hitting them with questions when he sees them in the hallway or in the training room... Cool!
