Excellent article and I agree keep the outside run in check and these guys are scary even without a monster pass rusher...Happy Halloween!
I don't think so, he's still making bonehead decisions like throwing an ill-fated pass to Kerley in the endzone when he had two guys around him, he was covered so well he looked like an inverted oreo cookie, and yet mark felt it appropriate to throw him the ball, fortunately for mark & the jets both defensive players hit the ball knocking it out of each others hand and causing it to fall harmlessly on the field. I would like to know what the reaction would have been if they had intercepted the ball. It reminded me of the Raider game when he threw the ball for a pick in the endzone killing a drive. Once he stops making bonehead plays I'll say he's improving but he continues to make them so to me he's not improving.
That's cuz they're so similiar. Dilfer seems to have missed the fact that while Rivers may be a "great QB", he sure hasn't been playing like one this season. He had more INTs than TDs coming into the Jets game and simply added to that imbalance. Something on the Chargers wasn't right Sunday but it wasn't really the Jets defense because something has been wrong with the Chargers for a few years now. It's been several years since they played anywhere near the level that their talent says they should. The Jets were simply a better team than the crappy teams the Chargers managed to beat in their previous outings this season. That "something" that's wrong with the Chargers is HC Norv Turner IMO.
Of course he is. It's that schitty piano he's carrying on his back. But it looks like it's getting lighter.
I am telling you all right now that this defense, although not statistically at this point, is better than the defenses of the past two seasons. We have more young talent that will be able to get stronger as the season goes on and I love the turnover potential that this team has this season. It seemed that in past years although we were good against the run we never really forced turnovers and it was more of a field position game. If Rex can find a way to solidify the edge we will have a great defense like he said he wants. He already knows how to scheme well against the pass game with the personnel and something tells me he is spending the buy week fixing the edge.
There is no way this defense is better than the defenses of the last two seasons. It has upside in the young guys on the DL but it is declining in the linebacker corps behind them and it still has issues in the secondary at positions played by somebody not named Darrelle Revis. The bottom line on the Jets defenses of the last 2+ seasons is that the schemes used have made them look better than they actually were and when push came to shove in the AFC Championship games they collapsed under the pressure of smoke and mirrors being subjected to a strong breeze and few ill-timed rocks thrown their way. The defense is still overly reliant on blitzing to get pressure and on a single cornerback to provide coverage on one side of the field so that everybody else can concentrate on the other side. It's still got real weaknesses up the middle of the field and is a danger to give up a long gainer to a slot receiver or tightend on any given play. A scheme based defense that is not populated by a bunch of very good players is always going to be weaker at the end of the season because the opposing offenses are going to be driving at whatever the flaw in the personnel is and they're explicitly going to be avoiding doing the things that make the scheme work against lesser opponents and teams that have less film in the can to study earlier in the season. Peyton Manning picked the Jets apart starting late in the second quarter in 2009 by passing heavily to his slot receivers and making the Jets pay for their weakness in the middle of the field after Strickland went down. The scheme couldn't cover up the fact that the Jets didn't have adequate personnel to cover the slot at that point. Even Darrelle Revis started to look shaky under the pressure of having to compensate for the inadequacies elsewhere as the Jets season went down the drain. The Steelers looked at what the Jets did to Manning and Brady and they just decided to run the ball straight at the Jets in the first half, reasoning that a power game that challenged the Jets front 7 was going to be more profitable than trying to find open receivers against the Jets beefed up secondary. The weakness in the front 7 cost the Jets the game and all it took was a smart offensive staff to exploit that. This defense is going to get run on until it proves it can stop the run. When the Jets bring 8 men up in the box it will get passed on with teams exploiting the coverage weaknesses up the middle of the field and the fact that Antonio Cromartie can be burned by quick receivers inside and overpowered by big receivers on the outside. Scheme isn't going to fix the flaws in the defense this season. The Jets are going to have to play better than they've been playing in the first 7 games of the season.
Yeah, and it was an insider article. "Want some real analytic material? We need your money first." Screw them. they probably rake more in in advertising revenue than any other network besides the big 3. The defense can't really afford any more injuries, but I have faith that they are going to grow and that they're being directed by the best defensive mind in football.
Great article. It's always interesting to read analysis that explains aspects of the game that go over the head of the layman fan (like me) rather than just banging away at the obvious. Maybe now I won't get so bent out of shape when I see an opponent's receiver get open knowing that it may actually be a natural consequence of the coverage scheme that the Jets are using. I also didn't realize that VJax only had 1 catch in that game - wow. With Kyle Wilson making huge strides our secondary is arguably even better than it has been the past 2 years. If only the DL and LBs can step it up against the run our D is going to be a serious force to reckon with.
Great article. The defensive scheme is really amazing almost every week. And the amazing part is that this defense is very good while missing Thomas, and not having a pure pass rusher. 6 more wins, and this team starts its road to the Superbowl at either San Diego or whatever mess of a team comes out of the AFC South (very preferable). In other words, this team should be in NE for a re-match of last years Divisional round in January..
Maybe. The jury is still out. Maybe Bart is coming to the end of his highest levels but David Harris is still and underrated LB. I can give you the nod on Pace as well. But Wilson has not been a problem this year and Cro needs to lay off the penalties, otherwise our CBs are 1st in the league. We are definitely weak at safety but how many Troys and Reeds are in this league. Manning was successful once Strickland went down. If he didn't go down, there's a good chance we would have won that game. Agreed but the egregious forward pass that was ruled a fumble and returned for 6 is really what cost the game. The slow offensive start and 4 tries into the end zone that failed for any points was probably what closed the deal. The D definitely needs to play better but I think we are seeing that progress as the season wear on. Outside of the Ravens D, I think there are very few teams in league with as many high quality players as we have. Ravens have a great front 4 but corners are weak. The Pats D is nowhere near what it used to be. The Steelers D is getting old and Palomalu has been injury plagued. The Giants have a great front D too but without Tuck, the entire secondary is for shit. No one in the league has as good corners as we have even with Cro's brain farts. The DLine is solid , maybe slightly above average, but is young as well. Ryan builds his team back to front and lets the pass coverage allow for coverage sacks. I'm sure he wished Rhodes played to his potential otherwise we wouldn't be talking about drafting a coverage safety every time the Jets get burned by a TE. However, Ryan's construction of the D is obviously working since the Jets D has been rated pretty well over the last 2 years and the Ravens D has consistently been a top 10 D. While there are very few Ngatas in the league, there's only 1 Revis and Aso isn't even being utilized properly by Phily. So the Jets D has it strengths in certain areas and weaknesses in others much like any other team. Tanny can't load the shit out of the D with playmakers or we won't have money to spend on anyone else.
er he forgot to mention that we already have 3 loses & RR words that we will play a home PO game is again teetering on the brink of just being BS :jets:
Thank god we have real fans like you. Fans that are so miserable they go out of their way to share their misery. Thank you.
All QB's are going to make bonehead mistakes. I Will say he is going to turn the corner when he starts moving safeties, not staring down his receivers, and confidence in the pocket. I don't believe we will ever see it. JMHO Your example is perfect for not getting off the play designed. That was a play they practiced a hundred times with no coverage I bet, or a practice team defense they knew what the defenders were doing.
every one of your 225 posts is a pile of uninformed shit. i guess league MVP tom brady wasn't playing well last year coming into the jets game
Uninformed? I didn't realize that shit could process information, being that it's an inanimate waste product, but hey, I suppose an ignorant asshat in Carpsville wouldn't be expected to know something like that. The Chargers have underperformed for several years, despite having excellent talent. In 2008, they won their division with a record of 8-8. In 2010, they missed the playoffs as KC took the division. This season, despite his team being 4-1, Rivers had throw for more INTs than TDs coming into the Jests game. In other words, Skippy, he wasn't playing well before the Jets game. Duh. Rivers didn't play well in the Jets game, either. Part of that was the Jet defense, but they sure didn't have to have an extraordinary effort to do it. What, exactly has Tom Brady to do with this topic? Oh, yeah, beating NE last year in 1 playoff game was the pinnacle of Jets' success in the last 40+ years, so that win has to be factored into any conversation: Normal person: "It's as cold out there as a witch's titty!" Jets-asshat-in-Carpsvilee: "Yeah, but the Jets shut down Brady last year!"
