Yes I know stats do not matter. Ignore the stats and focus on playoff wins. Ignore the fact as well that the Jets had a top defense.
What? Name the 22 starting qb's who are above Sanchez to put him in the bottom 10. I'll get you started. Rodgers Brady Brees Rivers Only 18 more!
1. Steve Young 2. Joe Montana 3. Peyton Manning 4. Dan Marino 5. Roger Staubach 6. Bart Starr 7. Kurt Warner 8. Phil Simms 9. Johnny Unitas 10. Brett Favre 11. Dan Fouts 12. Troy Aikman 13. Otto Graham 14. Warren Moon 15. Fran Tarkenton 16. John Elway 17. Bob Griese 18. Jamarcus Russell What do I win?
That's reductionist and absurd. Nobody is suggesting the stats are entirely irrelevant. They're a part of the picture. So are the playoff wins. You simply seem to focus on a quantitative evaluation. Most people use a qualitative evaluation with quantitative components. In other words, stats tell part of the story, but only as a supplement to what you actually see on the field. Stats can be diminished or bolstered by conditions. Tough to say the same about a holistic empirical approach.
Out of boredom I feel like doing this just to see where he is today. Going solely by starting QBs in my opinion. Would love feedback on this. Absolutely without question, better than Sanchez Brady Rodgers Brees Roethlisberger Vick Rivers Romo Eli Ryan Cutler Schaub The 'can go either way list' depending on how you judge reg season/postseason success and other stats Flacco (I personally would put ahead of Sanchez) Fitzpatrick Freeman (I personally would put ahead of Sanchez) Newton Cassel Bradford Stafford (I personally would put ahead of Sanchez, despite injuries) Kolb Hasselbeck Sanchez is better than this list, without question Moore Dalton McCoy Ponder A. Smith Tebow T. Jackson Beck Palmer (unless he regains old form) Painter Gabbert So in all, I have him 15th in the NFL (really 16th if you count Peyton Manning).
^ el terrible Tony Romo is not better than Mark Sanchez. He is one of the least clutch athletes in sports history. Joe Flacco is a bum. Josh Freeman is also a bum. Matt Cassel and Kevin Kolb are terrible. Without Bowe and Fitzgerald, they'd be worthless. The franchise's are incredibly stupid to pay them both so much. Sam Bradford's done nothing as a pro. How in the fuck are judging Newton, Stafford, Fitzpatrick Freeman, and Bradford on postseason success? Saying Cam Newton is better than Mark Sanchez is laughable. You're also not giving Alex Smith enough credit - he's been very solid this year. (I personally would put your list in the cesspool)
I actually agree with most of your list.I wouldn't say Matt Schaub is "clearly" better than Sanchez though. Schaub has a lot of Romo in him. He is known for fucking up in 4th quarters. I do agree that having Cam Newton that high already is justified. I know it's a small sample set but I'm already convinced he's going to be major. He's no Tim Tebow. He's WAY more than just raw talent and athleticism. That kid can make ALL the throws!
Looking at the entire body of work, Romo has put up better numbers across the board in almost every category imaginable than Sanchez. They may be 'bums' this season, but again looking at the bigger picture, they're stats trump Sanchez. I agree, which is why I put Sanchez ahead of them, but I do think both are in that middle tier, where you can debate who's better, without one being the universal winner. I agree again, thats why I put Sanchez ahead of Bradford. I put those middle QBs in the middle and wrote 'either/or' depending on how you view reg/postseason success. I didn't say all those QBs went to the playoffs, they clearly didn't. Again, I didn't. I only wrote in paranthesis which middle tiered guys I would put ahead of Sanchez. Alex Smith is having a great year, but looking at the entire body of work (you know his 6 previous seasons) he's been absolute garbage.
It's amazing what great play-calling and a quarterback guru at head coach can do. Smith isn't being asked to do too much for the first time in his career. He just has to keep the Niners in games. He's never had to the opportunity to do that. With that said, you don't draft game-managers #1 overall. Sam Bradford is in a horrible situation in St. Louis and he won't succeed without help. As of right now, he's an overpaid player playing for the worst franchise in the league. He can't take them to the next level. Joe Flacco is trash. He is supposed to be a game manager, but when things go bad in games, he implodes. He can't win games. They've given him all kinds of help and he still sucks. He's got a great arm though, so he must be better than Mark Sanchez. Josh Freeman has all kinds of help. For the first time in a while, that division is sort of up for grabs, and the Bucs won't be the team that takes control. He doesn't have that ability. He's not a winner - never has been, never will be. That team doesn't have the personnel to win with a game-manager. He has to win them games, and he can't do that. The Jets have sort of become one of those teams where Mark Sanchez can't really manage games anymore. He has to step up and against San Diego and Dallas, he did. He's a winner - always has been, always will be. That's what sets him apart from guys like Joe Flacco and Josh Freeman. They aren't winners. That's why they weren't at USC. That's why Flacco couldn't start for a subpar college team and went to Delaware. That's why Freeman played for a bottom-feeder Big 12 team. Take a guy like Aaron Rodgers. Look back at his career before the NFL - he was always a winner. It's not surprising to me to see him play at the level he's playing at. If he keeps it up, he'll be one of the best ever.
Absolutely. Smith got completely shafted throughout his career; think it was something like 5+ different OC AND head coaches througout his tenure in SF. We can go into what-ifs with all of these guys, so as of now, I just went off of stats.
This is fun. In no particular order within the sections. Clearly better than Sanchez (Team would likely have more wins if starter here): Brady P.Manning Roethlisberger Rodgers Brees Not clearly better than Sanchez (Team may or may not have more wins if starter here): E.Manning Vick Romo Flacco Cutler Stafford Schaub Ryan Rivers Smith Clearly worse than Sanchez (Team would likely have fewer wins if starter here): Fitzpatrick Moore/Henne Grossman/Beck Dalton McCoy Ponder/McNabb Newton Freeman Campbell/Palmer/Boller Cassel Tebow/Orton Kolb Jackson/Whitehurst Bradford So anywhere from 6-18, likely right in the middle of that second group.
Kevin Kolb is absolutely terrible and is no way better than Sanchez. And I agree mostly with the above.
I am still not dumbfounded that QB's on pass first teams have higher stats than QB's on teams with a more balanced run/pass offense.
Josh Freeman has 7 tds and 10 ints this year. no one really cares about Tampa Bay so you don't hear enough about how he's regressed. a lot of bad decision making this year. Joe Flacco? yeah, great performance he put up against the jags D. or us for that matter
