I feel we can win. Mediocre home teams beat mediocre road teams that cross the country all the time. Jets at Oakland as an example.
This game will be really telling about our season. We win this game, we go into our bye with momentum and have a chance to really get things rolling. We lose, and nothing but talking and internal turmoil for two weeks which could be absolutely killer to our chances of righting the ship after the bye. Chargers offense scares the hell out of me, gates is going to be a tough cover for anybody. I might be inclined to try Wilson on him as opposed to Eric Smith. Revis will take Jackson away, just as he did in the playoff game. If Cro is ever going to have a good game, this sure as hell should be it, meaning Malcolm Floyd should be shut down without worry. The real scare besides Gates is Ryan Matthews. He is a fast enough guy to get to the edge, and that is on us to stop. We havent stopped a toss left all year, and Westerman is just abysmal against the run right now. If we can actually stop the run, we could run away with it. Unfortunately, I doubt we able to do that. Their defense is sub par and is very beatable. Their defense has played no offensive threats outside the Pats, and is a third straight defense our inept offense should be able to find success against. Not that we really found success against the first two, but thankfully we arent playing the ravens right now. ST wise, we have a giant edge here. There kick and punt coverage is spotty at best, and Novak is a big downgrade from Kaeding, despite his patheticism in the postseason. Their punter is good, but not great. Better than Conley for sure, but not exactly a worldbeater.
I see us really winning this game if we start off hot instead of always waiting just before the 2minute warning to do something. But this has been a problem since last year, slow starts and I dont think all of a sudden it will be corrected for the SD game  . This is going to be a tough, tough game.
We are a tough home team this year. The Chargers are VERY vulnerable. These are the only teams they have beaten: Vikings Chiefs Dolphins Broncos All 4 of those are shit teams and all those games were close. I guess the same can be said about us, because we havent beaten a good team either but have blown out the bad ones, unlike the Chargers.. But im not intimidated by the Chargers and im sure they feel the same way about us. It should be a close game.
The way the Jets win this game is to shutdown Ryan Mathews and then blitz the heck out of Philip Rivers, who is having a bit of an offseason, on third down. There are too many quality targets in the San Diego offense for Rivers not to pick us apart if he gets time to find them. The way the Jets lose this game is to be unable to shutdown Ryan Mathews.
The Chargers will have also Gates back in the lineup.....and considering our shortcomings when it comes to covering the TE, this should be at the top of Rex's list of concerns next week.
I would be schocked if Revis isn't lined up with Gates for many 3rd down or short yardages. Cro can try to contain Jackson. We'll need to br using Smith in the box a lot to keep their run game honest. Hopefully the offense gets off to a less than terrible start.
Ryan Mathews has actually been the chargers most consistent offensive player this year. Last year he had some growing pains and was hurt. Tolbert is a decent backup but has had fumbling issues throughout his career and sometimes makes stupid decisions (anyone see the pats chargers game where he ran backwards for no reason?). Gates is not 100% definite on playing. He finally practiced yesterday and the chargers have made no guarantees that hes playing. Chances are hes not playing and even if he does he will be pretty ineffective. The pats did not shut him down contrary to what tedy bruschi thinks, gates just cant cut and move with a torn plantar fascia that hasnt healed in 2 years. Unlike the playoff game in 2009 where Revis changed up who he was covering, he should probably be on Jackson the whole game with cromartie on floyd. Floyds a good #2 but he really just catches jump balls and usually flails in the air and hurts himself. Crayton is the #3 and hasnt done much as of yet, he is battling bone spurs. The #4 WR is Vincent Brown, hes a rookie and has looked good in minimal spots. No sproles = no x factor, theyve used tolbert more on 3rd downs because he can help better with protection than mathews. The chargers lead the league in 3rd down conversions so sproles hasnt been as missed as analysts have suggested. Most defenses have been able to get through the chargers offensive line. If rivers has a clean pocket hes great, but hes prone to just taking the sack now after the beginning of the season he threw up too many bad passes and had 6 INTs in the first 3 games. This has been rivers worst 5 game stretch since 2007 when norv turner first took over.
^ Gates may not play, but if he is practicing on Monday/Tuesday I find it all but impossible, barring an unexpected setback, that he doesnt play sunday
This is a game the Jets win when they're good and lose when they're not. San Diego has a lot of talent, but we should match up well with them, unless Gates miraculously heals. The question will be how our offense plays. It's been a trainwreck all season. We're not going to beat San Diego going 3-and-out on our first 4 possessions again.
in the 2009 playoff game against a better charger offense that had won 11 straight games the jets started the game with 4 3 and outs and managed to win. This game is all about strength vs strength. If the jets D can play like they did in the ravens game, the chargers dont have a chance because unlike the ravens, the chargers do not force turnovers very often. They also dont rush the QB very well. The chargers are coming off a bye week though and maybe that has given new d coordinator greg manusky time to gel with this defense. Initially he was supposed to be an aggressive play caller, but he has played a very conservative bend but dont break defense that would make teddy cottrell smile.
A couple of points of contention. Revis did not take away jackson in the playoff game. Jackson had 7 catches for 111 yards. I have no idea how many of those were with revis covering him, probably none, but that just means revis was not covering jackson all game or even most of the game. The chargers defense is by far not inept. While jammer is no revis, he is a top corner in this league, even if he is underappreciated. Garay is an underrated nose tackle who takes up double teams. This team was #1 against the pass last year in total yards and this year is #2. Yes, they havent played anyone outside of new england that was any good, but the jets offense statistically has been worse than all of those other teams to date. The kick and punt coverage is definitely spotty. Returns arent great either. But novak so far is 11 for 11 in fgs and has a stronger leg than kaeding and has gotten the touchbacks that kaeding didnt have the leg for. Scifres, the punter is one of the best in the business. If legler wasnt in the AFC, scifres would be a probowler every year.
even if the kick is 8 yards deep in the end zone we still run it out....unlike the pats and other teams you have plated.
Yeah, there's still one unit on this team that is topflight. Westhoff has his guys playing like they're going to run it back for 7 on every kick return.
i feel the outcome of this game will determine the momentum swing of the jets season. Jets have yet to beat a good team. That said, I have a good feeling about this game. The offensive line played great, and i think this is the week we put everything together. 24-14 Jets.
If we beat the Chargers, I strongly believe we will go play and remind the Bills who they are. That would set a perfect situation for the Patriots game. Hopefully the Steelers and Gmen can take the Patriots out.
I think our defense gives up 13pts 1td(pass on Cro) and 2 fgs 30+yards I think our offense scores 2 td's(LT rush, Plax back shoulder throw) I think our special teams gets a score McKnight return 21-13 Jets
Unlike in 2009, we actually (in theory anyways) have other CB's besides Revis who really belong on the field. Cro hasnt been great, but he should come to play this week. Wilson on the other hand has been scary good. What this actually means is that Revis can stick on Jackson and we don't have to move him around like we did in the playoffs. Which of course means we can assume Jackson will be at best a minimal part of the offense for you guys. inept may have been too strong of a word on my part. My point being that their defensive statistics are greatly inflated by the piss poor offenses they have faced outside of new england. Maybe they actually are that good, but I seriously doubt it. By the way since you brought up last years numbers.... your pass defense was inflated by playing 4 games within your division. They were horrendous passing the ball last year in terms of ypg. KC was 30th at 186 ypg, and Oakland was 24 with 199 ypg. So within their division, they played four games against opponents who passed for less than 200 yards per game. I don't feel like going through every team you played last year to check, but here's the bottom 10 from last year 22. Jets 23. Buffalo 24. Oakland 25. Tennessee 26. Minnesota 27. Jacksonville 28. Chicago 29. Cleveland 30. Kansas City 31. Arizona 32. Carolina If memory serves, you guys played 4 teams on this list last year right? Oak, Jax, KC and Zona? which constitutes 6 games of your schedule against horrendous passing offenses. Moving away from your defense and onto our offense. Our offense fucking sucks. Its been so god damn bad jets fans have been leaping off bridges for a month. But we have all the pieces to have a good offense, if we ever click. Our biggest problem is Sanchez has spent the season on his back, and he finally started to trust the OL last night. Once that trust starts to come back, we can begin moving the ball forward, supposing Schotty doesnt continue to call games like a pop warner OC. Can you shut us down? Sure. I don't think we will be nearly as inept next week, call me an optimist, but i think its going to start to turn around offensively very soon. Scifres to my knowledge has always been considered inconsistent at best, by that I mean hot for 3-4 games, off for 2 then back on again As far as Novak goes, 11 for 11 is a good start. Has he made a clutch kick yet? Really had to make one when the pressures on? i don't know, thats why i am asking. Folk hasnt missed this year either, while making a big time kick against Dallas in the opener. regardless of anything else, I honestly think the entire game hinges on our run defense and your run game. If we stop Matthews from running wild, we win the game. If not, we probably get killed. but as always, the turnover battle is always the great equalizer.
