So Mcknight was back for punt returns against Miami. Maybe the coaching staff gave the job to McKnight so that Kerley could focus more on this 3rd receiver duties. I thought that Kerley was doing a great job on them though. His lateral speed and agility seem to suit him very well for the job. McKnight can definitely do the job and the move makes sense but I was really liking what I was seeing from Kerley. He is very good at dodging the first few guys and finding a lane where as I see McKnight as more of a speed in the open field type of guy. Thoughts ?
I dont have any problem with them interchanging PRs between McKnight and Kerley. They are both great return guys and they both have big play ability. Kerley has been very sure handed back there, tho.
McKnight has the type of vision that very few return men in this league have. Leave him back there - he'll make things happen. It's the way he's been his entire football career. His doubters look like complete fools now.
I'm fine with McKnight back there, he has the breakaway speed that Kerley lacks, although I like Kerley returning punts as well. Joe has to be careful with the ball though, there were a couple that could have easily been turnovers.
Doesn't matter to me, both are good at what they do. I trust Westhoff. Plus, Kerley is more valuable to the team as the 3rd WR. We need him on offense to step up as a slot receiver. McKnight is more of a swiss army knife/special teamer/occasional offensive contributor.
well Mcknight looked pretty shaky fielding punts last night... Kerley is definately more sure handed, plus he has also proven he can make a play in the return game. mcknight on the other hand is clearly one of the best return men in the league, for christ's sake he's averaging over 40 yards a KR, when the hell has that ever been done in NFL history? I don't think its going to hold up, but imagine if it did?
I'd keep him there unless he becomes a major contributor on offense, then I'd reduce his role to "big play returner" on punts. The same goes for Kerley in that situation...
Kick return averages will be up slightly this year since teams are returning them from deeper in the end-zone. It adds 5 yards to any kickoff return TD right there.
I'd rather McKnight only on KR. He's explosive in the open field but he still is fumble prone. I think Kerley is better in close quarters and McKnight is better in space with a head of steam.
Mcknight has become one of my favorite Jets very quickly. Coming out of college, the one thing that stood out to me, besides his athleticism, was his vision. He can see things around him unbelievably and just makes plays. He sees the whole field and has great instincts while the ball is in his hands. This is what separates him from greene IMO- greene does not have the vision for a zone blocking scheme, unlike mcknight who has great vision. I want to see his his role grow even more so, and if that means returning punts, I say hell yeah. People are starting to realize his play making ability as a KR and are starting to kick away from him or short kicks- his presence is being felt even with out him touching the ball. First person that comes to mind that teams do that to is Devin Hester... Now i dont think he has his speed, but i do think he has better vision.
I love the McKnight fever after all the hate most of this board heaped on him last year. I'd love to see him on PR, but ONLY if he gets more work in practice. He's not exhibiting good decision making there yet. Plus, Kerley has done quite well, enabling us to remove a starter (Leonhard) from the spot.
I'd rather see McKnight get more looks on offense than on PR. Keep Kerley back there, he's doing fine.
even so who else is averaging 40 yards a return right now? anybody? I'd be shocked if anybody (except maybe Hester) was even close. edit: haha scratch that. Joe is averaging 45.6 yards per kick return right now. the next closest is Randall Cobb at 32.4 http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/stats Westoff is awesome
